When playing the Interdiction Mission under tactical as a sub (before finishing any campaigns) I notice that it takes like 40 torpedos to sink the battleship / battlecruiser (Hood or Kaiser) in that mission... I'm no expert but 40 torpedos to sink a ship... isn't that like overkill??? yy:

Anyone else have this problem?

Eeh, it depends. Those ships literally had feet of solid armor protection in belts around the ship below the water line because folks were pretty paranoid about torpedoes. Sometimes it worked pretty well, sometimes it didn't.

I'm not about to sit down and calculate the blast potential vs. whatever thickness of whatever material... blah blah. I'm not a freakin physics major.

Cheeries ;-)

Because we don't have a detailed damage model, we have to assign "hitpoints" basically to ships. The BC Hitpoints are equivalent to their real-life stamina.
The information is out there. You can look at damage as actually occured as a guide. Torpedo's typically produced holes on the order of 16 FEET!! in WWI era ships, and that is what the Hood was. Even the German BCs were not immune, read an account of Jutland. There are countless numbers of after action reports from the shipyards describing the damage ships took. The Italians and the Brits did studies of underwater protection for large capital ships.

The number of TT reloads is one of the biggest errors in the game. 40 hits to sink any BB, let alone a BC is outragous. Both of the Yamato's went down with less than 20 and they were the biggest BB's ever built. What is the point of lining up a shot with your torpedo tubes and then need 5 or 6 or more hits to sink the target?

All of this was addressed years ago with the board game naval sims. Think about it; torpedo's have 1000lbs+ warheads, they explode underwater with all the force multiplyers that come with it. In those games a torpedo hit was biased towards engine and hull damage. Gunfire, while dangerous, was not nearly as leathal as a torpedo attack, as real war accounts bear out.

It should be; Corvette, SS, oilers and all merchant types 1 torpedo, always. DE, 50-60% of the time 1 torpedo, the balance 2. DD, 40-50% of time 1 torpedo, the balance 2. The Hood and her sisters, 4 torpedos max. Any more and what is the point? Just use guns if you have a surface command; they are almost as leathal as the torpedo, are self-aiming and cover a much wider arc. If in a sub, get close and fire 3 or 4 torpedos at a time. In an otherwise excellent game this is by far the most unrealistic part.

Did you know that Henry Ford make a ship out of cement? It worked, but most sailors were so wigged out at the idea of making ocean voyages in a cement ship that the venture um, foundered ;) The ship itself sailed for years carrying cargo, finally sunk (or was scuttled) somewhere in the Caribbean.
