Thanks fellas...Suppo for the enlightenment on the "financials", and Argon for drawing to my attention that I'd read more into East's comments than were there.
Too much rum.

Not to turn this of topic too much but yes evil bert is and was a pain and although punkbuster helps it hasnt stopped the problem by a long shot. And it doesnt help that the latest build has some vital flaws. But thats another subject. Not to be out of line, but yes Warspite.
Many, many of the games played online today are by subscription. Infact, it is harder to find a good free game than it is a subscribed game. Call of Duty, Mechwarrior, Americas Army, Delta Force, et al, they just exist in round after round of the same thing.
Dont get me wrong, I have played Americas Army for going on two years. Alternatively, Americas Army continues to be updated. The other games are not updated. What the publisher gave to you is it. East is referring to a program that will give the community continued development and an enclosed environment.
The enclosed environment allows more control over how people are playing. If you have ever played Counter Strike or Delta Force, you should know to what I am referring. Americas Army has a gentleman that calls himself Evil Bert who developed the "Evil Hack". Not until Punkbuster was introduced into this game did it mostly go away. Subscription games are not as hard for the developer to control.
Back to the money aspect: If you play a $40 game and want to play regularly, you most likely will end up wanting a server to play on. For a game like America's Army, you either pay for the connection that will allow a computer to run a server and a separate computer to play the game or rent a server on a monthly basis. My clan rents one for $160 per month. We also rent multiple Team Speak servers for $10 and $20 a month. Luckily, we are a large clan of young men who can afford to pay a hefty sum each month. Mind you, Americas Army, the actual game, is free to all but folks in the U.S. of sufficient age to pay in support of our federal government.
All East is asking is for soda money each month to provide us a good and continuous environment to play in. My only concern is whether his accounting staff is of sufficient caliber to ensure their break even is accurate.
$160 dollars a month is alot for a server. now i can tell you all that the reason it is so high is that the server in question is an offically tracked server which allows all players to increase their "honour" points. Now if they had a normal server without being offical it would cost half that amount. so thats a 100% markup just to have there master server scan the server. they can do this because they now dint let any server other than there own be official. Thats how they get their money for the game.
My clan seeks the much cheaper options. We have an unoffical server which costs us $40 a month. Our TeamSpeak server is hosted for free by HomeLAN. But there is still cost.
So East and the gus are using the option of asking us to pay to play the game. Now if you think about it 3 months of play will be about the price of a new game yes? so if the addons are coming out in 3 month periods it seems perfectly fair as its like were paying for a new game. If its anythign like Statr wars galaxies when it comes to updates the major monthly updatees completely change the game and are worth the $15 a month asked for.
I will be happy to pay for the MMO aspect of the game (assuming i get a job after leaving uni) and hopefully the game will be great to play. MY only concern is how the game will run as a MMO and im sure over time East will explain the intrices of the MMO game and hoe it will all fit together.
Did I miss something? Yes we can easily afford an official server, and therefore we do lease an official server although I stand corrected, it is actually $190 per month, not $160. I am sure if ERT decided to provide official, private use, servers, we would lease one here as well. In no way was I attempting to be misleading.$160 dollars a month is alot for a server. now i can tell you all that the reason it is so high is that the server in question is an offically tracked server which? allows all players to increase their "honour" points. Now if they had a normal server without being offical it would cost half that amount. so thats a 100% markup just to have there master server scan the server. they can do this because they now dint let any server other than there own be official.
BTW, leasing revenue of the official servers do not get captured by the Army. That is not how the U.S.'s system of government works.
My next door neighbor is a Navy Vet (82 years old I believe) of 3 wars. He served on PT Boats and Destroyers (chased Subs at Scappa and escorted Russian merchants). He is almost completly deaf from the Deck Guns. He said you couldn't wear hearing protection because you had to hear the orders being shouted. He came over while I was playing Enigma on my 42" Plasma and identified the Destroyer immediately called it a 2 pipe brokenback. Said it looked spot on! You would not believe the stories he told me (and I don't doubt a one of them) but I don't think he would be intrested in playing EnigmaThe idea of a WWII vet getting online and playing this game seems kind of incredible. I am sure some may try it, but all are into their 70's or greater. That is definitely not a demographic East has geared this towards.
Yeah, Ill be looking forward to playing against the geriatric crowd. My next door neighbor is a Navy Vet (82 years old I believe) of 3 wars. Remember, I allowed for special cases, but I ALSO said that was not the intended demographic.
I just thought I understood the "financials", now I'm confused again. huh2:BTW, leasing revenue of the official servers do not get captured by the Army. That is not how the U.S.'s system of government works.

Na, you had it right. The comment you quote is probably about 2 steps off topic.

Write down some of those stories, and I'll post them to Rat Patrol Radio (I can spare at least *that* much time from my job!) and it will serve as a little guerilla marketing for ERT.
Right on Argon...I always like in my job too, I meet alot of retired military and always try to pick there brains a lil....I always liked the story from one of em who was on a DD off the coast of korea or vietnam I forget which and when, but he said some sub put a tow in the DD that was by them and they then in turn went and sent the sub to de bottom
great listening to em cause ya know and can see it in ther faces...They Were There
