Finding Sub Depths

#24
when i was in high school, my dad used to tell me i had to hit the books if i wanted ot join the navy (and not be a deck swabber). i dont think its a bug in the game. i dont claim to know anything about sonar, it would seem that that between the asdic and the hypdrophone, you could measure X Y distance to a circle on your radar screen, and with the other one do a sonar ping and guage actual distance, wether it be on the surface or under water.

so, if it is under water, and the surface distance is 600 meters, but the sonar ping comes back as 640 meters as actual distance from him to me, then basic 10th grade geometry (which i did poorly at!! i had to call my sister!! lol) is all you need. pythagorus would have been so proud of me, and all you need is a calculator close by with an x-squared and square root keys on it.

take the actual distance squared, subtract the surface distance squared, then take the square root of the result, and thats your depth. in my case:

(640x640) - (600x600) = 49600

square root of 49600 = 222 meters deep, and you can prolly hit him if you time your drop just right.

so im not sure i would call it a bug or a cheat. ive not missed a single one ive tracked since.

Slight Campaign Caution:

If you try the trick for the first time, and you get near identical readings, which sometimes happens, there's nothing wrong: the sub is still maintaining periscope depth instead of diving for his life. You'd expect that to happen with a RL player, not an AI, but it sometimes does this ,especially in campaigns the AI is suddenly much more devious....

SET CHARGES 10 or 15 should do nicely in that case... [although be moving, or the hydrostatic shock will rupture your own vessel - when stationary go for 25]

So don't let any lack of difference in readings throw you. The trick is A-OK. :)
