G'day all
Since the patch, I seem to be getting hit by torpedos more (I'm playing as corvettes on the surface). My general tactic is to turn straight towards subs when they are detected on the surface and head towards them at flank speed while using the deck gun to force them to submerge.
When I hear the incoming torpedo alarm, I go to full starboard or port rudder, still at flank, to try to avoid the first spread of torps.
I then hold a general course broadside to the sub, while attempting a sort of circling movement (ie generally curving around it) until i get the next torpedo alarm, when I pivot hard towards the sub.
This way I can usually close the range and force the sub to dive, when I slow to 1/3 or so and fire hedgehogs until I'm in DC range. If there's a second submerged sub in the area while I'm pounding the first submerged sub, I accelerate and turn when I hear the torpedo warnings, returning to the first sub's position to continue depth charge attacks.
However, I've noticed since the patch, that I get creamed by what looks like a much smarter, wider torp spread that I don't seem to be able to evade by turning towards the attack. I might get a couple of torps to pass either side of my bow, but then there will be another couple fired from a slight angle that I can't seem to evade.
I have been considering trying a few new things.
1. When receiving an attack while my broadside is to the sub, at flank speed, stopping engines (or hitting full reverse), at the same time pivoting, in the hope that the AI has fired at my presumed position by leading me and that by by stopping and turning, I will get in behind the first spread. Got any comments on this one? Reckon it could work?
2. Attacking at a slower speed and then going to flank when the torpedo alarms go off, hoping to get in front of the spread. Wotcher think?
Also, I find i am getting most of my DC kills since the patch at 75 metres. My usual tactic is to start with a 120 or 150 metres depth setting, and follow that up with a 90, then a 50. However, it seems my 90 metres spread is often hitting the subs at 75 metres (this is my second DC run). Anyone noticing what the AI seems to be doing now? Are the subs crash diving to 150 still, but then coming closer to the surface?
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any thoughts.

If you find yourself to be surrounded by torpedoes, try this:
Head towards the sub and dodge the torps as they come. Next, drop depth charges on it.
That saved me once or twice on the patrols.

I think I have been hit by a torp 3 times through out the whole game.
I just hear the alarm, find the torps using the binos and stear a parth around them, switching back to nakid eye as they get closer.
Piviot turns are the best at close range.
Didnt know there was antything special about it, except spotting WHERE the torps are before turning for the sake of it.

I come in at an angle circling the Sub moving in closer and closer until I can get close enough for a DC run. If he fires I turn away at flank speed this gives me the choice of turning port or starbord without reducing speed. Most of the time just turning away is all I need to do for the subs tend to lead you. after the torps clear I turn in and make a run for him (if I'm not close enough I keep circling until I am) I hardly ever get hit anymore. This tactic is better with a DD when your turns are slower but you speed running from torp gives you more time to dodge the torp coming from behind but I use it in a Vett too (with a vet I will sometimes turn in instead of away and it works well). On multiple Subs you just have to watch from two directions and beware the double spread!
The advantage of this method over coming straight in is you always can turn the same (away from Sub) direction to avoid torps before you even see them due to the fact that the sub will always lead you when your coming in broadside to him.

Cheers guys and thanks for the tips Argon - I'll try turning away. From the bridge of my 'vettte I find it hard to spot the torpedo tracks, so I tend to plan to make a radical course change as soon as i hear the alarm. I'll try looking more closely.
Last night I got clobbered by three torps from one spread while I was already damaged - smoke everywhere and the engine not responding well. When I got hit the last time, I went to F5 to look at the devastation and then when I hit escape, I found myself on the bridge of my corvette, which was sinking at the time! Very cool effect (forgot to take a screeny) with white bubbles streaming past me towards the blue surface (I was sinking by the stern).

LOL now I know I must be the worlds most basic player of this game
Why not look from spectator view ?
I do that of course Baron, and I find that helps, but I also end up fumbling around to get back to first-person to make course adjustments when I finally see those diabolical torps! They always seem to second-guess me!
However, tonight I dodged like crazy and prevailed! Huzzah! Splice the mainbrace!

smithcorp ... You don't need to return to bridge ,, you could use the S D and F keys .. and even the T & B !
OR : You could just use the voice commands . Don't you use those ?
I think one of the great things about Enigma is the voice control. and anyone near thinks a lunatic is sitting at the 'puter ! The landlubbers ! Civilians ! Poor suckers ! They don't know ! Let em think !
