Operation FLINTLOCK (Air Ops Sat 29 Jan 1944)

On the evening of 22 January 1944, under the watchful eyes of Undersecretary of the Navy James Forrestal and Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, an enormous striking force, designated Task Force 58, slowly filed out of Pearl Harbor and set course southwest for the Marshall Islands.

 

Rear Admiral Richmond Turner commands the forces against Kwajalein Island, with Major General Charles Corlett's 7th Infantry Division of the US Army on board. Rear Admiral Richard Connolly, with Major General Harry Schmidt's 4th Marine Division, will sail the Roi-Namur Islands in the north. Rear Admiral Harry Hill's task force was designated the reserve force ready to assist any of the two invasion forces after securing Majuro.

 

The entire operation is covered in the sky by Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher's planes from six fleet carriers and six light carriers, which is escorted by eight battleships and a full compliment of cruisers and destroyers.

 

Today kicks in the  opening chapter of the invasion: TF 58 is going to attack ROI-NAMUR, MALOELAP, WOTJE and KWAJALEIN. The objective is the total destruction of Japanese aircraft that survived the pre-invasion strikes over the previous two months.

En la tarde del 22 de enero de 1944, bajo la mirada del vicesecretario de defensa James Forrestal y el almirante de la flota Chester Nimitz, una enorme fuerza naval, designada TF 58, partió desde Pearl Harbor y puso rumbo suroeste hacia las islas Marshall.

 

El R-Adm Richmond Turner está al mando de las fuerzas contra la isla de Kwajalein, con la 7ª División de Infantería del Ejército abordo. El R-Adm Richard Connolly, con la 4ª División de Marines al mando del Major General Harry Schmidt, se dirigirá hacia Roi-Namur en el norte. La Task Force del R-Adm Harry Hill ha sido designada como reserva, lista para asistir a cualquiera de las dos fuerzas de invasión una vez haya sido asegurada Majuro.

 

Toda la operación está cubierta desde el aire por los aparatos del Vicealmirante Marc Mitscher, que cuenta con seis portaaviones y seis portaaviones ligeros, a su vez escoltados por ocho acorazados y un complemento de cruceros y destructores.

 

Hoy arranca el primer capítulo de la invasión: la Task Force 58 atacará ROI-NAMUR, MALOELAP, WOTJE y KWAJALEIN. El objetivo es la total aniquilación de los aparatos japoneses que sobrevivieron los ataques previos a la invasión durante los dos meses anteriores.
