FIGHTING TEN "THE GRIM REAPERS" FIRST TOUR

Air 10 Group embarked on the USS Enterprise from Pearl Harbor in mid-October 1942, and headed north of Santa Cruz islands. On 26 October, VF-10 had its baptism of fire in a fierce battle with the Japanese fleet. The "Grim Reapers" shot down eleven Japanese aircraft, but lost LTJG Flowers, the first squadron casualty.

The Big E, damaged in battle, arrived in Noumea, New Caledonia, on 30 October. Although repairs were not completed, the Enterprise put to sea hastily on November 10 to Guadalcanal.

 On November 13 Group 10 contributed to the sinking of the battleship Hiei, and during the following days attacked and destroyed numerous enemy troops transports and supply ships en route to Guadalcanal. While staying at Guadalcanal VF-10 downed twelve enemy aircraft. However, three pilots (Lt JG Kirsipuu, Ens Plane and Ens Burns) were reported missing in action.

 The Enterprise returned to Noumea on November 16 to complete repairs. On December 4, she slipped into the sea,turning to Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides, where she remained until 28 January 1943. Returning to the Salomons, VF-10 defended the cruiser Chicago on January 30, shooting down eight enemy bombers in the area of ​​Rennell Island.

 On February 1 CV-6 arrived at Espiritu Santo. Over the next three months, the Enterprise operated from the New Hebrides conducting patrols in Guadalcanal. In May she returned to Pearl Harbor. On May 27, the CV-6 received the PUC (Presidential Unit Citation), the first aircraft carrier to be so honored.

 Finally, Air Group 10 returned to the United States aboard the Enterprise on 20 July 1943. VF-10 would stay at Naval Air Base Puget Sound, Seattle to train with the new Grumman F6F .

 During the first tour, Fighting Ten pilots shot down 33 Japanese planes, 7 probable and 11 damaged.

Five men died or were reported missing in action, while two pilots were injured in combat.

Material losses  amounted to twelve Grumman F4F-4 destroyed, five of them due to operational reasons.

El Grupo Aéreo 10 embarcó en el Enterprise desde Pearl Harbor a mediados de octubre de 1942, y se dirigió al norte de las islas Santa Cruz. El 26 de octubre el VF-10 tuvo su bautismo de fuego en una encarnizada batalla con la flota japonesa. Los Grim Reapers abatieron once japoneses, aunque perdieron al Ltjg Flowers, la primera baja del escuadrón.

 

El Gran E, dañado en la batalla, llegó a Noumea, Nueva Caledonia, el 30 de octubre. A pesar de que las reparaciones no fueron completadas, el Enterprise partió a toda prisa el 10 de noviembre hacia Guadalcanal.

 

El 13 de noviembre el Grupo 10 contribuyó al hundimiento del acorazado Hiei, y durante los días siguientes atacó y destruyó numerosos transportes enemigos de tropas y suministros en ruta a Guadalcanal. Durante su estancia en Guadalcanal el VF-10 derribó doce aparatos enemigos. Sin embargo, tres pilotos (Ltjg Kirsipuu, Ens Plane y Ens Burns) fueron declarados desaparecidos en acción.

 

El Enterprise regresó a Noumea el 16 de noviembre para completar sus reparaciones. El 4 de diciembre se echó nuevamente a la mar, dirigiéndose a Espíritu Santo, en las Nuevas Hébridas, donde permaneció hasta el 28 de enero de 1943. Nuevamente en las islas Salomón, el VF-10 defendió el crucero Chicago el 30 de enero, abatiendo ocho bombarderos enemigos en el área de la isla de Rennell .

 

El 1 de febrero el Gran E arribó a Espíritu Santo. Durante los tres meses siguientes el Enterprise operó desde las Nuevas Hébridas realizando patrullas en Guadalcanal, hasta que en mayo regresó a Pearl Harbor. El 27 de mayo el CV-6 recibió la PUC (Presidential Unit citation), siendo el primer portaaviones en recibir tal honor.

 

Finalmente, el Grupo Aéreo 10 regresó a los Estados Unidos a bordo del Enterprise el 20 de julio de 1943. El VF-10 permanecería en la Base Naval de Puget Sound, Seattle (Washington) para entrenar con el nuevo caza de Grumman, el F6F.

 

Durante el primer tour, los pilotos del Fighting Ten abatieron 33 aparatos japoneses, 7 probables y 11 dañados.

Cinco hombres perdieron la vida o fueron declarados desaparecidos en acción, mientras que dos pilotos resultaron heridos en combate.

Las bajas materiales ascendieron a doce Grumman F4F-4 destruidos, cinco de ellos por causas operacionales.
