It happens partway through a mission for no discernable reason. I bought the game off the shelf in this last week so I assume it's the current release

Afer reading through one of the threads I started playing with music off and it hasnt happened again.
Have you tried changing your sound acceleration in directx ?
Do you have all the latest drivers for your hardware (sound|video|mainboard) etc?
playing with sound off so Im going to leave it at that. I send my dxdiag to tech support after I got it working and said what the problem is as they say to and I have to give kudos to those guys cause they got back to me within a day. great game great crew life is good.
