So....I went and got this last night and played a little bit.

First impressions:

Upon starting the game, you arrive at the main menu of course, though nowhere to be seen are instructions/tutorials.  What the hell...I jump into the Campaign and start up as  an American skipper in the Atlantic (I really wanted to sail the German fleet but the only option was American or British).  The campaign starts...lo and behold there is a short tutorial video to explain basic maneuvering and operation on weapons.  Away I go in my Fletcher class DD and go off to sink some Zerstorers off of Rhode Island (how did they get here??).  They were easily defeated and after all tutorials were completed, I was on my own to head off to the Atlantic.  Umm...ok, how to get there?  No instructions on how to get there.  OK, click on the map...oooh it got bigger!  Wait, what?  I can't click on a base and auto sail to it or set destination???  The big map seems useless other than to show you where the bases are.  You can't click on anything in it.  Instead, you click a direction on the main screen and hit time acceleration....you'll get there eventually.  :(

Bottom line, you get XP and "war bonds" for each engagement.  You use the war bonds like money to buy new ships/subs to add to your fleet.  Some ship types are unlocked only after you get so much XP.  Once added to your fleet, you sail all together but in battle, you can select which ships/subs go into battle.  For instance, I currently have 2 DDs and a sub in my fleet.  I engaged a cruiser and only sent the sub in to attack as the cruiser has no anti-sub capability so why expose the DDs to the cruiser?  :)

Dislikes so far:
  • Camera controls.  I can't view the battle area the way I like.  There is a Free Move camera but I can't seem to get a low broadside profile of my ships like I'd like.  It seems you either get a top-down view or an angled view in which you can't really see the horizon too well.
  • Damn the torpedoes!  Friendly fire!  Your allies have NO concern about your safety when firing torpedoes at the enemy.  They will fire a spread regardless of whether or not you are in the path of them.  This becomes especially frustrating when your mission at times is to protect merchants and they fire torpedoes through the merchants to get to the enemy on the other side.  They ought to be court-martialed!
  • Arcade style.  Not my favorite thing.  It's all point and click operations.  Not even a wheel to steer by or a bridge to stand on.

Graphics and sound effects are good though.  Looking forward to their improvements.
