How To Use Torpedoes

To be honest I did the 16 differant sketches, and the problem is that you always refere to 0 (the north) and you can't do otherwise...Work the equation for a W.E. and I'm actually rereading them (sketches and notes) to see if I did something wrong. Actually I have found 16 equation but noticed that on the 4 "main cases" divided in 4 "sub cases" notify: that there was always a commun equation, so at the end you only got 12 equations. Anyway you'll soon find out that you have to work systematicaly, work using a method. Good luck and keep me updated ;)

Well here is my next take on the whole torpedo thang.

If we are talking about making a moderately realistic sub sim; then I think most of us want to do some of the things that sub crews had to do to accomplish their mission.

So after doing a little research today, and figuring out in my mind what would appeal most to me when setting up a torpedo (without going into so much detail that the essence of battle is diminished) ... I came up with this:

I would like to have the same information available in game, that was needed to input to the firing solution computer aboard the sub. And with a programmable calculator; be able to input these numbers and have the calculator respond with the proper heading and speed the torpedo has to be fired at.

This would simulate the onboard firing solution task.

As far as I can tell, the info needed to perform such a task would be:

- relative bearing of the target (angle off the bow)

- relative coarse of the target

- speed of the target

- range (distance) of the target

From what I can see, Enigma only gives you the true course and speed of the vessels.

Anyhow just an idea

Please correct me if I am in error ... I am just a newbie in the sub world.

Yeah, if you read the Appendix C in the Silent Hunter manual link above, it explains very nicely why you can basically ignore the distance to the target. Its not exactly intuitive that you can actually ignore the distance to target but, the math works. The only reason distance to target really comes in is figuring out your chance to miss and if your torp has the range to get there. Obviously the farther the target is away, the greater your errors in calculation and guessing heading and bearing will be. So the only real trick is figuring out that annoying angle on the bow (b). Just a side note.

I was testing out all this last night in fact. I like to test things out to make sure I am not getting crazy and off track. I started up the US sub campaign, mission 1, skippering the Lionfish. I spotted the LFN oiler at about 3200 meters off with his escorts. I got my heading, his heading, his bearing, his speed and my torp speed. I quickly figured out the angle on the bow on paper and used it in the equation above. I fired 1 torp 9.3 degrees in front of his track. I got a hit and kill at 3000 meters. Hurrah for math!

Image Done the same thing ;)

Except I shot the marchant at 3200 :P

What?  You didn't bother to stick around and sink the two corvettes too?  I tell ya... Those corvettes are complete pains to hit with torpedos...  I got oiler with harldy any effort.  Those corvettes were a completely different matter....
Actually I was testing my programm, not doing the campagn. And franckly those corvet, you can't shot them with TDC, it's always tactics and short range shots. And a lot of luck sometimes.....

Anyway enigma!:
