Patch Suggestions...

#1
Hi all
Within my forty-five minutes of gameplay here's what I've discovered and think should be included in the next patch...

-When I pause the game and go into an FKey screen then exit that screen the game unpauses? Let me choose when to pause/unpause.

-Going into binocular mode always has me viewing the horizon? I'm an experienced hunter and have hunted all my life so I know how binoculars work. They dont work like that. The binocular mode should zoom to what you were looking at in the first place or close to it. Having to pan all over the sky to find an aircraft is a HUGE chore. This is a computer game so make it a little easier for the gamer.

-No zoom functions when viewing ships externally? You make beautiful ships but dont have a good means of showing off the models ;(

-In the first training mission on the US side the aircraft were booming and zooming waaaaaaay to fast for that class of aircraft. They were performing like AR234 Blitz aircraft.

-The games jerky @ 1024x768 and higher especially when tracking aircraft around the volumemetric smoke. If thats what that smoke is. 800x600 seems acceptable though with everything off. Game needs some optimizing BIGTIME. Did you remember to take out the debug code???

-The control interface is too big. It should be half that size or less. The large radar mode is ok because you can make it go away. What you might consider is leaving the small radar size alone but decreasing the size of the interface or break it up into floating controls? That BIG white control window just kills it for me.

-Last but maybe not least. When I exited the game I had to press the escape key no less than 7 times to get back to the desktop. All that advertising at the end is irritating

The manual states that minimum specs are...

Pentium III 750 MHz

256M of RAM

ATI Radeon SDR 32MB graphics card

Game level sound card

Win 98, 2000, NT4, XP

Direct X 8.1

Here's my specs...

P4 2ghz@2.6ghz

512DDR ram

geforce4mx 440se 64mbDDR

win98se

directx 8.1a

Regards and good luck,

You can hit P for pause before you triggers any F#-key the F#-keys are not pause keys Image or were you saying that you did this and then ESC un'pauses the game for you ?
Good idea on the binocs Image

Zoom on spectator view, use left and right mouse button Image

They have addressed the screensize over 800x600 allready Image

It better to have the credits in the end than in the start, if you dont want to see them, use ALT+F4 Image

Hi Jesper,

What I meant to convey was that when you hit pause then hit an Fkey then hit the Fkey again the games unpauses. No big deal but it does unpause.

Thanks for the info on the zoom in spectator mode and the ending credits thing.

my game runs perfectly smooth @ 1024x768. i have a 1.5ghz with 256megs of ram and a gf4. try upgrading to directx 9 and switching hardware sound acceleration to none.
to do that goto startmenu > run > dxdiag.exe switch to the "sound" tab and move the slider to no acceleration. then exit.

and its funny you should mention removing of debug code. most people would think this a complete insult to a developer except that in the v1.3 (think it was this version) of battlefield1942, the developers (EA is the largest game company in the world) did leave debug tools in the game, which allowed quick access to transparent walls, and a several other things
You just might have the game running smooth. HOWEVER I am not gonna upgrade to dx9 or disable my SB sound acceleration.
This company recomments dx8 and I'm sticking to it. There should have been a setting for different sound quality. Like 816,32khz and so on if thats the prob.

If you wanna see tightcode checkout IL2 Forgotten Battles. Tons of detailed AI aircraft flying around with anti aircraft guns blazing and ships and runs SMOOOOTH as a babies bottom on my rig. With hardware accel fully enabled.

There's no way three surface vessles and five aircraft make my computer run like a drunken homeless person on crack.

3 ships may not be alot but consider how many polys are rendered (and moving) just in the ocean itself. thats probably where the big hit is.
i dont really mean to criticize but i think its kind of silly to refuse to disable your hardware sound acceleration, or update directx, and then complain about choppy performance. if these things are known to help, than its worth a shot.
@Topdog then the unpause by F# is surely a bug that should be fixed, IMO
you say you wont upgrade to DX9? any reason?

later games will require it, however E:RT doesnt, so if you dont want to upgrade now, then you should just wait. Image

But do try lower the sound acceleration, see if it does any good Image
I have a P4 2.8 512 Mb RAM, Radeon 9700 w/128 Mb RAM, Audigy 1, win XP Pro, had DX8 (just went to 9, no difference noticed) h/w sound accel on Full.  Image  Image
The game runs perfectly - not a single second of laggy behaviour experienced at all - right out to 1600x1200 (the only issue at that res being a text bug that the developers have already identified, so I run it normally at 1280).

OK, I'd expect my rig to play games well, but I think this one performs (and looks) pretty well the best out of the recently released games I have bought, and I find the performance better than IL2:FB.
Top Dog thanks for posting and you have some good suggestions in there.  We are committed to updating Enigma from player feedback so you don't have to feel like hostility is the only way to make us listen.
The hardware acceleraction is an issue that is common to several games and it isn't a resolution issue.  You simply get better performance from games without a loss of audio quality by setting the hardware acceleration to basic instead of full.

It's your choice, you can leave it on full if you like but it is your CPU that is doing the extra work and it will make the game run rough sometimes.

1.  The deck guns are difficult to aim due to the elevation/traverse commands being too great at each keypress.  This needs some sort of fine tuning rather than the 1000 yard jumps we are getting each time you hit the keys.  Something similar to the periscope speed would be more desirable.  Maybe a 10X reduction if you press a CTL-Arrow key combo.
2.  I guess it would be too much to ask for gyro-stabilized gun mounts on the sub but the large guns on surface ships definately have a link to a stable element (gyro) to keep them steady in a pitching sea.  Of course battle damage may knock this out, but then again, every ship equipped with these had at least two independant stable elements.  Each being used as a check against the other, while not busy keeping the guns steady in a fight.

That's all for now.  This game really hits the spot for WW2 naval action. Keep it coming.

Hostile???

Anyway,

Just for the hell of it I ran some tests with sound accel on and off with a prog called fraps(www.fraps.com) and it didnt make a bit of difference. In fact I didnt gain a single framerate increase either way.

Here are some screenshots I took using Fraps...

This shot was taken during the first training mission before things heat up...

Anyone else care to post screenshots using Fraps???

I find it difficult to move deck guns left-right without (accidently) changing the elevation - any chance that holding down (for example) shift while mouse aiming would lock elevation?
Or have missed something obvious (again).....?
yeah i find that using the mouse to direct the guns manually works alot better than the keyboard, and yes a button to lock the mouse to either up/down or left/right would be helpful.
personally i think that gyro stabalizing the deck gunes would give the big ships way to much of an advantage, being able to hit with that much better accuracy would spell death for anything within sight.
I just ran that fraps thing  took a destroyer mission traning mission, and I must agree that the FPS sometimes drops drastic, as low as 3-4 FPS even with sound acceleration at 0 (but I blame my old ATi card).
Took a sub traning mission aswell, where the FPS in battle was around 10, (not as many shooting ships/planes).

I got the best FPS when submerged and in spectator view. around 60FPS and around 35 inside.
I want to try this FRAPS thing out guys but where do I find it?
Hi Jesper
Dont feel so bad. Just for kicks I swapped my new card out for my ole voodoo5500 and guess what???

Yep, you guessed it - I only lossed (check this out) 3 count it THREE frames per second.

Shame Shame Shame Image(

1. Doh! I never tried the mouse to fine tune the aim. I would second the motion of the mouse 'lock' function as stated above if it's possible. If not, the keyboard would do fine, IMHO.

2. Smaller ships have speed and maneuver as a defense against the larger ones. It should be near suicide to take on a battleship with a destroyer in a ww2 environment. The big boys always sought each other out to fight. That's why they had 17-20 INCHES of armor plate in their construction. I don't think a ww2 5inch projectile would do more than scratch the surface on a BB. It would take a heck of a lot™ of torpedoes to take out a BB. Esp. when you consider it takes four or five torpedoes to take out a 'Flower class' ship.

Btw, I've seen the IOWA in drydock. 'Impressive' doesn't even begin to describe it. AWESOME (as in struck dumb) almost gets there. Maybe a hundred torpedoes might slow it down to a crawl. These ships are behemoths. ...pardon my rambling, please...

Wow i tried that FRAPS with my Athlon XP2000, 2x512mb PC2700 DDR and GF4TI4600- also using Win98SE and DX9.0a and was returning well over 70fps (at times nearly 100) with x2AA on and 1024x768 with the demo and all those planes, ships etc
A good mission to test FPS on is the Patrol Destroyer Training "Fortunes or War" it has around 12 DD's in battle with lots of planes aswell.
Topdog in reviewing your message - there is no BIG WHITE control window and the game is compiles sans debug code.  It wouldn't fit on the cd if we left it in.
Hey Tracer
Why dont you post a screenshot Image
