As all of you know oil prices are going sky high.
As I have heard it's because We dont have enough refineries.
Well how come we don't have gas lines?
Funny we seem to be keeping up with demands.
I heard on the news that we have enough oil in reserve
to last this country 50 yrs or more.
so I ask why are we paying so much?
And in the meantime oil producers are claming record profits.
Somebody knows more than their telling.
This really grinds my gears.

Very difficult to answer.

This links may explain alot to you but only until 1993.
The truth is, what yo? stated already:
It means nothing else, than oil is a dying resource. And with all dying recources oil becomes more and more expensive. Do not expect the prices for a barrel oil to decrease again. It will increase and increase.
I could tell you something about the wh?s and wheres of the Iraq-war again. Also I could tell you alot about V-8 cylinder cars and its fuel-consumption or wasting energy in any other areas but you don?t want to hear it anyway.
Years ago, we had a very similar discussion over at the UK-nb?s in which I mentioned alternative energy, such as solar-energy, wind-energy, geothermal-energy and so on.
Go to California and have a look, how they realised already what the remaining U.S. seems to fail to see.

This was the way to go, two decades ago already and since your government fell asleep back in the time, you have to pay the prizes now. (we do too)
Thankfully Mr. Schwarzenegger is a very clever chap but you wouldn?t listen to him a decade ago. You?d call him a tree-hugger, I guess.
Btw. Germany is not an oil-rich country so we always had to pay the oil prizes dictated by the OPEC.
Nowadays Germany is world leader in developing alternative energy technologies and I hope we can profit from this knowledge in a foreseeable future more, than we do today already. I?am going to install solar-cells on my house roof soon. It?s rather cheap over here, since we developed it in the very 1st place but still is rather expensive over in the U.S. but currently I also still have to buy oil in order to keep my house warm.

Now 50 years is probably a long time for you/ for us but it isn?t for the world economy. It is only a small time-span.I heard on the news that we have enough oil in reserve

Popgun, sorry to hear you needed surgery and you're not feeling well.
Good thing to go check it out further.
When I lived in Az from 2000-2005 I kept asking everyone about solar power.
Utilities were very high there, yet every single person acted like I wanted the moon!
Nothing but comments about how much it would cost to install, how the batteries were
bad at storing power, it would take 30 years to break even... I thought it was dumb that it
wasn't being used!
It was so windy in New Mexico both times I went thru I could hardly stand up, yet I didn't
see a single windmill.
There are many parts of Indiana (where I live is one) that don't have sun for over 150 days
in a row, so solar lights on the sidewalk hardly get enough rays to work. I think solar here
would be a waste. But, in many parts of the country that's not so and Az in one of them.
If all I heard about solar is true, then we need to "build a better mousetrap" and address these
problems. Trouble is, why is APS (AZ power) going to fund something that will take away from their
revenue? They aren't! This is one for the universities and gov think tanks to work on and NOW!
( I was stupid enough to believe when we rescued Kuwait we would no longer have to worry about
exorbitant oil prices... ha! we just funded their new 3600$ a night hotels!) We've all seen the new Dubye (sp?)
It's like Disneyland! I would love to see the figures on how much our military effort cost (on their behalf) and
how much they have repaid us in either money or oil. Anyone else curious?????

lets face it the mess in the middle east we craeted was a mistake we didnt find any weapons and never saw a lick of oil...and all we did was p--- off the rest of the world and make ourselves look like war happy fools......
in the states more horsepower is always better and our cars look like tanks compaired to the rest of the world.....
and i wont even start on if we stoped this war we could have had national health care and put money into development of solar wind hydgren power ideas.....but no we spend 3 trillion a year in a iraq where they dont want us and where they have been killing eachother sence the dawn of time......
oh well........

Good thoughts in the right direction 45 but it isn?t only an U.S. american problem. It - of course - is a global problem, since we all are dependent to oil. Other countries do wasting oil-energy too, not only the U.S. There is China, India and Australia too, to name only the biggest oil-wasters.
The core of the problem is also surrounded already: since many countries did not invest enough in researching these alternative energy technologies, they simply haven?t the infrastructure now, to simply change from oil to alternative energy. Simple: no windmill----> no use of wind energy. Oil is there and can be used but it?s becoming more and more expensive and additionally pollutes our environment. Same goes with nuclear-power, which is in addition also very dangerous.
As hunterdog already correctly noticed, for some states it would be better to invest more into solar-energy (those with lots of sunny day per year, like California, Arizona or Texas)
Better for those states which are very windy or having a coast to any ocean would be wind-parks:

I must admit they?re looking rather ugly in the landscape but they?re highly effective and don?t harm anything.
The newest (well, not so new but maybe you?ve never heard about or at least never thought about) developed alternative energy is called Tides-energy which uses the energy occuring between flood tide and ebb tide. Water has an enormous power, as we all know. This energy can be used easily.
Tidal Power Plants
Wave power plants
All these alternative energies can be industrial utilized.
Oh.....
...well, you want to drive cars.....
Have a look here: Solar powered cars
This is all not new to you. Many of you know about alternative energies for a long time already. Start to care and discover them more. It has an enormous potential. You only need to change thinking - directions and invest your money, where it?s worth to be invested.

Oh and you wouldn?t know me, if I wouldn?t add a controversial comment about the future:
In 50 years you wont waste time thinking about energy anymore. It simpy wont be a problem anymore....I hope.
But you?ll have to think about water alot, since fresh drinking water is the next dying ressource and there wont be enough for the growing world population. I don?t want to imagine but it could happen, that several countries are going to war for capturing water.
Hint: if you have money to invest, invest it in drinking water purification and desalination plants.
Your family will become very rich within the next 80 years.

It?s spelled ?Dubai? and is not in Kuwait but in the United arab emirates (UAE). They haven?t very much to do with Kuwait but Dubai was the biggest U.S. american base nearby, the american navy could operate from. I?ve spent a lot of time in Dubai during the 1st persian Gulf war. I was a boatswain on a german container-vessel back in the time and we transported scout tanks for the united nations to Kuwait. ?Dubai?was always a highlight on our journey. Disneyland describes it pretty well but it has been build with oil-money.

You would laugh about ?Dubai?, if you have been in ?Bahrain?already....... jeez.....they?re wasting petro-dollars, you can?t imagine.
Tulla
Your right about oil running out someday.
But by raising the prices so high right now the oil company's are
just pushing us to find other way's much sooner.
I wonder what they will do when we stop buying their oil?
I can see it now......OIL hit record lows
