How do you know what depth another submarine is at? I don't see anywhere on the big tactical screen where it shows me what depth a sub is at, but enemy subs always seem to drop their depth charges at the right depth. Also, what is the blast radius of depth charges?

There is no exact depth guage in ERT. That would take all the fun out of the game.How do you know what depth another submarine is at?
Rather, the sub's blip changes as it goes deeper.
You should always set your BTAC display to 500m when a sub is within that distance.
If the sub appears as a triangle, it's not far below surface. Lower than that, it turns into a red dot. Even lower, the dot gets blurry.
There are other things that affect the sub's representation on the TAC, particularly noise from your own engines, the sub's and from surrounding ships.
Look back on this forum a page or two and you'll find threads about using depth charges and how to sink subs. Also, read up on the TAC in the PDF file that comes with the game.
Locating the depths of Subs is a pain in the behind, but learning the art of where to drop your charges is harder:) I think I have only sunk 5 subs with charges since I began playing the game in september, I find that they always end up surfacing before i get em so I blast the crap out of them then:)
If you're playing on the harder difficulty, you don't have the benefit of the triangles on the TAC/BTAC. You have to do it the old fashioned way.
By using a little light maths(1) and watching the B/TAC carefully(2) you can get a reasonable depth estimate..........
BUT - it will only tell you where the sub is now - NOT where it will be when you drop them cans!

Yes you do - at times - when they're near surface.If you're playing on the harder difficulty, you don't have the benefit of the triangles on the TAC/BTAC.
From my experience as long as you lead the sub by about 50-100 meters and drop charges to 150m its imposible to miss. I can't even count the number of sub kills doing this ive racked up since i bought this game last week. Good Luck ! :

I have found most subs I sink, once they've had a chance to dive, are between 90 to about 130 meters.From my experience as long as you lead the sub by about 50-100 meters and drop charges to 150m its imposible to miss. Can someone confirm/de-myth the following: Depth charges are also triggered when they contact with a sub, even above their set explosion depth. According to the manual, they shouldn't but this is the feeling I get from playing both as a surface and sub captain.
If that is true and if most subs can usually be found between 90-130 meters, setting charge depths to 150 meters is a good strategy, provided you're also releasing them at the right place and time.
yup you have to figure out which way and how fast the subs moving and drop charges acordingly. I usually do a couple of passes coming from behind, passing overhead, and then dropping to 150m when im about 50-100m infront of him. If that dosent work after the second pass I try again and drop at 90m. usually it dosen't go much further then that.
