Need Advice

Anyone -

I've gone through all of the patrols and training missions in each ship/boat with moderate success. When is the best time to try a campaign for the first time? Should I get really proficient in the patrols or just go for it and get more experience that way?

I jumped right into the campaigns back when i first got E:RT.
