Pioneer:
:::walks through the wooden shutters:::

Hey Sam, you did the place up while I was gone. Looks nice.

:::Booths now line the side wall, the velour alternating between red and blue. The old 'highchairs' are all gone replaced by wooden barstools. The round tables, all with a single red candle in a wax bowl, have accompanying chairs with armrests. They look plush. On the back wall, between the Gents and Ladies, rippling lights of purple, yellow and green pulsate...Sam bought a juke box.:::

Business been good Sam?

Not bad, since the Server Truce, kinda quiet though. Hoping for a big turnout tonight, got a band coming in later, new chef has been getting rave reviews. The new decor seems to bring more nurses and teachers in, but at least the troops are behaving with them. You want your normal?

:::Sam doesn't wait for my response, but pours me a triple Bacardi. He waves me off as a I reach for the wallet.:::

This one's on me.

:::Always a gentlemen Sam, always buys the first drink, always goes home to his wife, always has Sunday off to be with his kids. I walk over to the back wall. The memorabilia from days past stalks us in newspaper clippings, photos and souvenirs. Popeye's magic hat, Deep Death's walking stick, the old Assassins flag, frayed and beer stained. There are a few new photos up. Sam always puts up a photo of his patrons when they first come to notice. He keeps the old ones though...nothing like history to tell us from whence we came. Right where it was when I was last here, my photo hangs on the wall. Hmmm, a bit dust on it, I'll just rub it off. In my peripheral vision, I can just make out the frame of the photo beside mine, as it always was. All the photos are wooden, except the one beside mine. I turn away, careful not to catch more than a glimpse of the portrait inside the sterling silver frame. I walk over to the jukebox.:::

Hey, you got my song in here.

:::Sam smiles from behind the bar as he continues to wipe glasses. I dig around for a nickel, only to find a quarter. I press the keys - J3. Seems appropiate it should be there. The record flips over, the lights dim a little and room is filled with the music from J3. The first chorus strikes a chord in me. I turn to the nearest table, place my bacardi and stride for the door.:::

Going for a walk on the pier Sam. Back shortly.

:::I head out the door, to a chilly wind, tighten my jacket and stride off. I wipe my eyes clear, must have been the dust.:::
Tbar:
Tbar notes the man left without paying the bill ... ""flips"" down a couple of notes on the mans table .."Hey Sam.. I got it covered". Tbar strolls over to the door and watches the shadow meander down the peir ... 'he will be back' Tbar thinks.

Buxton:
...meanwhile, Buxton sways over, drains Tbar's drink, then goes back to sleeping under his table.

Pioneer:
:::Hours later, wind blown and tired, I return to Sams. Few people are in the bar, it gives the appearance that no one wants to be here any more. Striding across the room, I see Sam reach for the bottle with the white label, and pours me a fresh bacardi. Only now can I sense something is very wrong in these plush surroundings.:::

Umm, where is everyone.

I don't know. Normally on a Saturday night, this place is rocking. People coming and going, conversations of interest and dribble, lots of emontion as they unwind from the week.

:::The few people here I don't recognise. I wonder what they are thinking, and what brought them to Sams on a Saturday night. Reaching for my glass, I cross the parquetry dancefloor and plant myself in the corner booth. From my vantage point, I can see the entire room. Even the front doors are backlit enough for me to ascertain their oak texture on the shutters. Drink in hand, I sit, and wait. And watch to see who will be the first person I recognise at Sams tonight.:::

:::The jukebox plays another soldiers request. It's an old dance track. People move onto the floor and begin twirling. I glance around the room, to discover I am the only one sitting alone.:::

Flotsam:
A hush falls over the room as the door swings open to admit flotsam and his stunning enterage of beautiful POW's.

His steely, pinkish-grey eyes sweep the establishment, instantly assessing the threat potential of each patron.

Recognizing the slack-jawed, vacant expressions on the faces in the red section he relaxes, and leads his bevy of beauties to a friend's table near the bar. He signals respectfully to Sam, then, unexpectedly, turns to the booth in the far corner and beckons a surprised Pioneer to join them.

"A triple bacardi for my esteemed opponent," flotsam says quietly to the bartender, as pioneer shuffles dejectedly over. "Bring the ladies whatever they'd like," he adds, nodding towards his crew. "and a round for the house...beer for the smurfs and shirley temples to the red sections if you wouldn't mind."

Sam's eyes lit up as his fingers flew over the abacus the retired red admiral used for sums exceeding ten.

"Yes sir," he beamed, reaching across to accept the battered credit card flotsam pulled from under the table.

Buxton, serenely unaware that his pocket had just been picked, continued to sleep, quietly snoring while flotsam rifled through the rest of his wallet and pioneer eyed up flotsam's new crew, imaginatively dusting off a few old pickup lines.

The night was young.
Pioneer:
:::looks at Flotsams jetson skirts. A long way from home, no one would ever know, no one need ever say a word.:::

Thanks anyway. Nice to know, it's tempting, and because it is tempting, I'll just head back over there.

:::collects his drink, reaches for a second pint sitting on the bar. Crossing the floor, side steps a sleeping blue uniform. At the corner booth, places each drink on opposite coasters; Sam insists on coasters on the old mahogony tables. Rumour has it that Sam got these tables from an old English castle. Rounds the dance floor to the juke box as it finishes it's last number. A quarter in his hand.:::

Flottie and the skirts, who will be the lucky lady tongiht?

:::scanning the selection, notes the Flottie's favourite is listed at K2. The keys are pressed, I turn and flick a thumbs up. The music starts, the ladies swoon over the Pink Fish, his reflection in the mirror over the bar bathing the room. A smile for the Fish who is happy where he is. The table shudders a little as I slide back in, the ice creating a red spectrum through the bacardi. The pint sits, frothing.:::
Flotsam:
In an instant Flot?s Fins perked up and all eyes turn to the scuffling sound coming from the door. An old drunk and a couple sheep enter the bar.

Sam Yells: ?get those filthy things out of here!?

With the strong stench of fermenting alcohol blazing from his, breathe, the old drunk lifts his head and says to Flot: ?do as the good man says, I?ll share me girls with ye?.

Flot just smiles.

Pioneer rises from his seat reluctantly (knowing that he owes Sam a favor) and proceeds towards the old drunk to give him a boost out the door but Sam calls him back. ?Wait! Let him stay. Just get those Damn sheep outa here.?

The commotion rouses Buxton. He rises to his feet, looks across the room and spy?s his Salty Ole comrade Argon leaning on the bar harassing Sam for a Tab as Pioneer herds his companions out the door.

Buxton shouts; Argon! Look everyone it?s Ole Argon the Assassin! Why I knew him when he commanded the Northland Navy!

A chorus of laughter breaks out in the room.

Argon peers across the room with his one good eye and Yell?s ?If Shad were here we?d take out the whole lot of ye!

Tbar takes advantage of the ruckus to steel away with several drinks and two of Flots women and one of Argons Sheep and mutters something about a party as he departs.

Buxton bought Argon numerous drinks that night and the two of them sat in the corner telling old war stories for hours, which we can safely assume none of which were true??.
Pioneer:
:::returning baaaaaaack inside, I wipe the Merino off me:::

See you changed breeds, gone for an Australian hide this time?

:::Argon looks at me strangely.:::

A sheep is a sheep.

:::Perhaps he does not know any other way. Perhaps he has grown up not knowing any other way, and when a good breed lands in front of him, he cannot see what prize it holds...until it is left in the field when the next breed arrives.:::

I guess so, sometimes you never know what fortune you have, until it is 26000km away.

:::Argon looks at me like a squirrel does cranning for a better view. Fottie leans back on the bar as another of his 'fleet' check him for damage. Even the ole Bux has a smile and a beer. I have often wondered what stories my opponents tell their alliance about their adventures. Despite the fearless battles, and the many losses, I speak volumes of my chief opponent, though never by name, only by title.:::

:::The boys looks happy tonight, from the cantina style bistro beside the bar stems a white light. The wafting smell of food cooking and the rattle of the odd pan signal preparations underway. The blackboard menu is limited, but always tasty fare.:::

Three hot dogs, mustard, relish and cheese, and a coffee to go.

:::Sam is walking past with another order when he stops to look at me. I know what he's thinking.

I'm not going to drink the coffee, it's for handwarming.

:::Sam knows the reason why and doesn't bother to ask further. He crosses the floor and serves caviar to the table near Flotsam. I walk back towards my booth, detouring to the jukebox. For the price of a phone call, three minutes of happiness. The place is starting to fill, I key my song again, J3. It starts at the moment I reach my booth to find Sam serving my dinner, and my coffee. Patrons file onto the floor, nurses unbutton their collar as they dance, and holding that coffee, feel the warmth from where it came, some 26000km away.:::
Flotsam:
Flotsam's eyes harden as he glares towards the insensitive red vermin eating caviar at the next table. He had done his best to ease Pioneer's sorrow, recognizing in the decrepit old seaman the unlikely battle between hope and futility, but, finally realizing that prey will be prey, he reverts to form.

"A bowl of cherry tomatoes !" he orders from Sam in a loud voice.

The pregnant silence of an impending battle filters through the alcoholic haze at Slippery Sam's. Argon, drunk as a skunk and stinking of sheep-dip, looks up hopefully. Buxton's snore skips a beat as his subconscious warns him to clear the decks for action. Flotsam's pectorals rise menacingly.

Tbar, returning to the room, wiping both a smile and a bit of wool from his face, unwittingly proclaims that cherry tomatoes are not, never have been and never will be, served at Sam's.

He glances quickly at the red section, looking for allies in this impromptu skirmish. The red vermin, once known as a force to be wary of, stare fixedly at their Shirley Temples. One loss too many has broken their spirit.

Tbar stands alone.

Argon and Buxton stagger to their feet. It's not often a tomato responds to a direct challenge. They know they must hurry or the courageous red vermin will be annihilated before they can engage.

Suddenly, in a shatter of broken glass, Pioneer lurches to his feet, charging from the darkened booth in which he slouched. If only he can make it to Tbar's side before the action begins....perhaps, together, they can down a smurf before they are both destroyed.

Hope turns to despair as Buxton and Argon, instinctively reacting to the sound of broken glass, spin and intercept the daring veteran before he can cross the floor.

Charged emotions fill the room. The vermin inhabiting the red section, finally spurred to action by their gallant leaders, rise to their feet, ...only to be confronted with by the stern, though eerily silent, smurf challenge. They falter, stumble, and return to their seats, lower their eyes and single-mindedly begin to plan their next tanker missions.

Flotsam's eyes flick to the boarded up window alongside the dance floor. It seems like only yesterday that Popeye, the infamous scourge of the central lagoon, was thrown out and on to the street in mid-song. His assailants were never identified and the incident was written off as simply another night at Sam's.

"We can take the red vermin off the list of suspects." flotsam thinks, strangely depressed. That old expression....'A good Red is a Dead Red' has never seemed so appropriate.

"Perhaps it is just Tbar's turn to become ?a good red' ", he muses, and swivels slowly to face the wool clad veteran, swaying, yet still determined, near the last unbroken sheet of glass in the pub wall. cool.gif

Flotsam:
My apologies, in advance, for the previous post...

I've been trying to win a jacket from Canadian Club ...one ticket per drink... :buxton

No jacket ...so far... but I found myself in front of the computer with a belly-full of rye, no jacket, and the need to unburden my soul (and exorcise my literary demons) at 1 a.m. tongue.gif

What ?? Were you expecting prose? ???

Pioneer:
:::pulls the little Blue Book out of his breast pocket. From beside it, the jukebox catches a glint of the Gold Fountain Pen. On the wooden table I start to write in the infamous Book of Burden:::

Anger management lessons.

:::The book and pen retire to their resting place. I rise and head towards the gents room. Along the way I approach several guys in uniform....uniforms in Sams? Sams has always been a place where both sides could congregate without the uniforms....these guys must be new. The hushed tones reach me ears as I appraoch.

Quote

Use to be a big man in the Northland.

:::As I pass, I drop them a line which freezes them in their tracks.:::

He'd drop you to the bottom before you ever got a shot off.

:::The boys are stunned.:::

You look like you've been hit by a truck...what do you know?

:::Ah yes, the ever smart reply from the new breed.:::

I survived, you wouldn't.

:::The boys know advice when they hear it. I slither into the gents room, and shortly return to my table. A fresh bacardi (no straw) waits for me upon my return. Across the booth, a fresh Kronenburg sits waiting. I smile, and lift my glass across the room to Flotsam. He nods his head. Adersaries yes, but knowing the enemy, you know when they hurt. Sam crosses the floor and wipes down my booth.:::

How long?

Doesn't matter Sam, I have to wait.

:::He knows it's going to be a long wait, and changes the candle at my booth, and walks over to the boys. Pointing back at me, I can only imagine the conversation. From his long white apron, Sam fidgets for a quarter and drops it into the jukebox. The sounds eminate from J3.:::

Thanks buddy, I think it's gonna be a very long wait. With or without the prose.

Buxton:
he bar is near deserted when Buxton lets himself in -- he has his own key -- in the early morning hours. A puddle of seawater and oil immediately forms by his seaboots, becoming a tiny, evil smelling river that threatens to seek out the few inebriates sleeping off the previous nights excess. Argon lifts his head, grunts, and goes back to his rhythmic snoring. Shad is face down in what looks to be a plate of Sam's speciality curry. Of Tbar there is no sign. Flotsam and his entourage are long since departed and the sole drinker is Pioneer.

"Eh up Pio" Bux, wearing shiny new four bar epaulettes in stark contrast to the rest of his dishevelled clothing, claps his old adversary on the shoulder. "That was a mission and a half. Ten ships of that convoy won't be making it to port...mind you, my old VII is going to need more than a lick of paint. 'Twas touch and go with the enemy aircraft..."

Buxton rambles on, blissfully unaware that, as usual, no one is listening.

Shad:
::feels something funny going on in his nose as his snores hastily awaken himself but only to find a piece of Sam's mid-night-special spaghetti lodged just inside his left nostril::

How and when did I get here?, I said softly to myself amongst the mumbles that shown of total confusion.

::eyes still not focusing::

As my ears adjust to the ambient sounds of my surroundings, a faint hint of light rain can be heard as the street light shone through the faint red material of the window curtain. Clearing the lodged noodle with a slap of my hand against me face, I?m stunned by my own assault. Me head spins for a few moments more as the hangover tells me that once again, as usual, someone has pelted the house with free rounds.

::eyes start to respond to the dim lights::

Reaching over and parting the curtains I peer out onto the blackness that is pierced only by the sole lamppost that illuminates both the entrance to Sams?, and the edge of the pier. The water cascading against the window starts to sooth my jagged nerves. With strained and bloodshot eyes I look to see the raindrops flying past the glowing lamp atop the post. ::this is making me dizzy again::

I quickly release the satin fabric and slowly look about the room. There across from me, on the other side of the table were, what looked like to me to be clumps of wool strode about the tabletop. Some sopped up by small spilling of beer and ale.

As I gazed further, I saw Pioneer and Buxie talking at a table across the room, and in the corner, Argon snoring on what looks to be a fluffy woolen pillow.

Shuffling to me feet I realized me shoes were missing. No big deal I thought, as they must be here somewhere. As I pass their table, I heard Bux beckon for me to join them. I waved them off and held up 1 finger in passing signaling to then I'd only be one minute and headed to the gents room.

Looking in the mirror, as Argon would say, with me one good eye, I appraised last nights damage. Swollen eye, split lip, and wool fuzz all in me hair. ::Musta been a good night, I thought to myself::

I stumbled to the one working toilet that had a latch on the stall. As I recycled last nights beer, I read the messages on the stall wall.

"For a good time, call 1-900-BAAAAAA"

"Buxton uses Glow-in-the-dark condoms!"

::so you could see him coming?, I thought to myself::

"A priest, a minister and a rabbi walk into a bar. The bartender says...What is this, a joke?"

The other writings were obscure to me as the light bulb in that end of the gents room was out. So I flushed and went to the sink to wash up puzzled to see, in a plastic glass on the sink was a set of dentures with one gold tooth in the front.

I then turned for the door and heard the familiar "POP" the door makes when the hinges are sprung. Then I walked over to the jukebox and saw there was a free play not taken. Me fingers found the buttons for my favorite tune. J2, only me trembling finger slipped... ::J3::

Oh well, at least it's music, and it was free....

As I sat down at the table with me comrades in foe, the conversation started...

Pioneer:
::: I watch Buxton indulge in an animated conversation with himself. At one point, he looks as though he will become embroiled in fistycuffs with himself, before settling down.:::

::: Sams is always open, and it's always Saturday night at Sams. Being located here, Sams has a open door philosophy, he knows that many wander away, only to peer in at some time in the future to see what has changed. Tending his bar, he never forgets a name, and always remember those whom have travelled this path before. I wave him over, my legs a little too rubbery to cross the dance floor.:::

Another bacardi please, and would you mind replacing that beer.

::: He looks at the untouched beer sitting opposite me. From my wallet I pull out a crisp note, and wave him off. Sam will put it away for me, like where else would I go, this is where I belong. Across the room I see a young nurse, dressed up looking for someone to give her the life she wants. She smiles in my direction, before crossing the floor. As she passes the unaware Buxton, she gloms his cigarette pack off the table, and fondles a thin one to my face.

Got a light?

::: Her hands raise up, and I see the gold band on her fingers. So far from home, what is she thinking.

If you go over there, I'm sure one of those guys could fix you up.

::: She frowns, and crosses over towards the single officers, stifled to rely on something close at hand. Sam returns with my bacardi and beer. The corners of his mouth turn ever so slightly towards heaven. :::

Why not?

::: The question needs no response, I simply do not take what is not mine. The first taste brings a memory, and I rise from the booth. Across the room, I approach Buxton, whom now appears to be asleep. As I brush by, I slip his cigarettes back into his pocket, the nurse unaware I had returned them. Rounding the room I return via the jukebox, sliding coin after coin into the machine, but only making one selection. Back at my booth, the beer discretely flows over the lip, as J3 plays.:::
Buxton:
They are actually candy cigarettes and so have a tendancy to melt when lit.
Pioneer:
:::Checking my watch I notice that the date has special significance. Thousands of miles from home, I look across at the last bastion of contact, the public phone in the corner of Sams. With folding doors, the glass repels the noise of Sams, and creates an intimate void inside the three foot cubicle. Looking at the intimidating black phone, I swallow my pride and pick up the handset, as my mind starts to wander.:::

::: How many troops have been away at war, unable to call home? How many loved ones have stayed at home, gone without news for months on end, but still hold the faith and belief in their hearts? :::

Long distance operator, what number please?

::: I gulp again, consumed by a fear. :::

Long distance operator, what number please?

::: I give it to her, and I hear the tones dialing under the sea as they head for my home. A click, and then, the phone starts ringing. And ringing. And ringing, but no one answers. I put the phone down with a slamm, and my coins spill out of the return chute. There's no one waiting for my call.:::

Need some air Sam, save my drinks.

::: I leave the bar and walk through the shutters. Whilst I was inside, the weather has turned nasty, and the sea is venting her anger. Waves crash against the beacon lighthouse, but the starboard channel marker stands her ground. The sky has become a smouthering blanket, and the light rain sneaks inside my upturned collar.

20,000km and eight timezones from home.

::: There was no answer, there was no one home. I stroll along the pier towards the sea wall. The ocean pounds the lighthouse, and it holds it's footing in the face of adversity. A wave hits the pier and knocks me off balance. :::

Happy anniversary Babe.

::: No one is around to hear me. :::
Argon:
The sweet scent of sea spray and thunderous roar of the surf awakens Argon like a lovers persuasive whisper for companionship. This is a call that even the deepest of sleep cannot deny. Argon lifts himself to his feet, brushes the peanut shells off his overcoat, adjusts his eye patch and steadies himself on a table. He drains an unfinished Pint from the previous night and says to himself, ?these old sea legs don?t handle shore leave like they use too? as he stumbles for the door.

Once in the open air he regains his spirit as he sets a brisk pace for the docks. Argon passes Pioneer and shouts, ?My lover is furious and she calls for me! I have been absent too long! I must set sail at once? Pioneer just nods dejectedly and says, ?at least she calls?. Argon wonders to himself how Pioneer can be so glum on such a beautiful day but doesn?t take the time to ask.

Argon climbs aboard his destroyer and yells to his crew, ?Hoist the Assassin?s Flag, the Sea? she wants a trophy!? The First Mate informs the Captain that the only Ship he will find on the sea?s in these conditions are Assassin Ships but the calling of the Sea prevails and the hardened crew obeys with precision as they batter their way into the nor'easter.

Shad:
Shad looks around at the pictures on the wall as he thinks to himself...

There is Ole Deogee, Rugewolf, one of Santee, and of Global One... Wow... those were the days... Like the time Ruge and myself had to abandon ship and drift on a rotting raft back to the lag00n using just a pingpong paddle, a board off an imported beer crate, and Ruges nickers he had won in a poker game. He tied off the leg ends and heald them up to catch the breeze as I stear'd the raft and would swatt his bum with the paddle to keep him alert....

We laughed and drank for days... We fished for those bony little fish called (hmm... I forget... Shad?) and would sometimes just lay back and let our imaginations run wild upon the clowds and the formations they made. ::Hey look ! Theres ole 1Baddude with an anteater nose and bunny ears!::

Shad orders another round and refocuses back to the pictures on the wall...

To think all these salty sea dogs are all missing in action. Hard to believe... Oh... theres Von Sinkum! I can see him now... standing on the bridge leaning against the railing, sipping and sturring his tomato juice/beer concoction. Barking out taunts to all his fow (mostly, just anyone within earshot reguardless of rank or status).

And over there is a picture of ole Romal! What a Guy! Standing there in his 17th century red admiral uniform. He would mix it up with anyone at anytime... Man... what a friend he was... last seen doing his mix-it-up with some of the island wimmins ... rumored to be running his own lil herum somewhere up in the hills of one of the many islands of the lag00n...

...and the picture below Romal is what looks like..::squents to see::... YeS! Drifter ! Draped in the Confiderate Flag of the South! Wearing his Gray uniform what has lipstick stains on his collar and a sword belted to his side. With beer-clad hand raised in salute to the photographer. ::wonders if anyone told him the north won:: hmmm. Oh well, if I ever do see him again, i'll buy him a big arse beer and a yankee potroast just to get his blood a pumpin again.

Shad eyes wonder around the tavern to one of Sam's adds for side orders and sees that Sam does have a sinse of humor after all. For down the list was one for Spinich, and preceeding it was a cartoonistic picture of Ole Popeye!

::laughed to himself for what seemed like 10 minutes and wondered if just before ordering spinich, would it suddenly disappear off the menu::

Shad hears the pay phone ring as Sam walks over to answer

I could hear him talking to someone and shortly he let the phone hang down by it's cord and called my name.

"Shad", he bellowed out as he flipped a 2-bit coin over to me. Some weirdo wants to hear J3 on the jukebox.

I walked over and slid the coin onto the slot and hit ::J3:: thinking of fone sex and 900 numbers, but this one took the cake.

A whurling servo inside the jukebox started up and the flip side plopped down upon the face of the turntable as the tonearm sat down to find it's groove and the song began to play:

If you leeeave me tonight, i'll cry. My love comes, from a tear-stained pen.

I ordered up another beer and sat to stair at the bubbles and wondered if I'd ever see my old buddys again...

Pioneer:
Pioneer returns from the pier, his stockmans coat waterlogged, but his uniform underneath dry. The moon has peeked over the horizon, and bathes the front of Sams in soft yellow light. As he approaches the door, aromas reach his nose.

What is that smell?

I push open the shutters and stop inside the door. Sams is the not the place to take children on a Saturday night, but the place has been slightly redecorated. Glasses lay broken on the floor, the odd barstool splintered in the corner. A crowd stands blocking the dancefloor, but parts like the Red Sea as I head towards my booth, now occupied by three vagabonds. The repugent smell increase.

Hey, it's the one time big shot, now one time loser.

The guy against the wall, saffron beard and floral shirt appears the most obnoxious, and the apparent leader. The 2 inch havana hanging from his mouth is covered in salavia. I had heard of these clowns before, Assassin wanna-be's but men without integrity, without principals, frequently cowering in darkness. Known to have no scruples, and to wear cheap cologne. The Scavangers. I drop my eyes and note the leader has the sterling silver photo frame in front of him. He follows my gaze.

Pretty girl, bet the boys could tell me what she really likes.

The jukebox finishes it's song, and silence falls across Sams. The faint shuffle of feet tells me an audience is building. Voices go silent.

Ya might wanna put her back, she doesn't belong with scum in cologne.

The smile on his face vanishes to anger. He sits beside one muscleman, and across from another guard. The three of them are big, hairy and ugly. The leader extingushes the havana on the photo's face, unaware that Sam has them encased in glass. She is safe from harm, but it's time to get her back.

You think you're good enough, Pie-In-The-Ear?

The crowd responds with ooows. I look over my right shoulder, and signal for calm. The Flotsam girls dive into the ladies room like a syncronised swim team, leaving him alone at his table. Bux has awaken and is now flexing his knuckles. Looking back I see a reflection in the mirror moving closer behind me. The stockmans coat falls from my shoulders, and I reach up and remove the bars from my collar. Without looking I toss them over my left shoulder, they never hit the floor. The leader leans forward and looks around me, to see Mongoose holding my rank and jacket. He looks him up and down, aware that Mongoose has beefed up recently.

He's here to carry you out to the ambulance.

The bacteria in cologne laughs at me, reverberating around Sams. Then there is a long silence, before the sounds of feet running across the dancefloor. The crowd turns. Cowering under a table, across the room, the only voice emminates from Tootie.

Holy cow, there's gonna be a fight.

Pioneer:
The right hand man goes to rise from the table. A glint in his hand sparkles the steel blade knife. The opposing goon reaches across his body to a pocket unseen. T'is time to bring the photo back from the repulsive cologne Scavengers.

The back of my wrist impacts with the knife wielding thug, his skull whips back against the mahogony of the booth. I strike forward across the table and reduce the second's ability to speak. The leader, struggling to alight from the booth, rises, his legs still pinned by the table bolted to the floor. (Earthquake regulations)

His lapel holds firm as he is removed aerially from his seat. Across the dance floor he touches down on Buxtons table, beer spilling everywhere. The leader bounces to the facia of the bar, before sliding to the floor. The offsiders, still groggy, are introduced to dwarf throwing before combining with the slobenly mess of their leader. It is little more than a rodeo bout, over in less than eight seconds.

Pioneer looks down at the booth, staring at the sterling silver frame. Knelling in the seat, he reaches down and wipes the black smear of ash from the portrait. The hook on the wall is highlighted, and gently, he replaces the photo.

As Tootie rises from under the table, the new barmaid rushes to Buxton. His hand has a glass cut, and she tears her skirt to create a makeshift bandage to tend his wounds. Mongoose, unmoved to this point, walks over and collects the rumpled bodies. One over his shoulder and two under his arms, he crosses the floor without a word and exits the bar, the shutter crashing across the forehead of the leader on his way out.

You've been hurt!

One of the Flotsam enterouge exclaims and points towards me. The crowd disperses as Buxton is smoothered by the barmaid. I look at my hands, tinged with red, and find the wound. My uniform ripped, I have been slashed across my heart. Superficially.

Pioneer turns his back on the crowd and looks at the photo wall. He leans across and straightens the sterling silver portrait, back in it's rightful pace. From the back of the next booth, he grabs his jacket and puts it on, shielding the injury from those that are present. Mongoose returns, without the bodies. From across the dancefloor he holds up the bars of rank. Without a word, Pioneer crosses over as Sam and all but one barmaid, sweep the floor clean.

You gonna be OK?

Probably, maybe.

Mongoose pulls his billfold from the hip pocket, and drops three notes on the bar. Buxton is resting his head against the barmaids chest, the Flotsam girls are praising him for his heroic efforts, the cheap smell of cologne still exists, but it is waning. And the photo is back where it belongs.

Pioneer leaves the bar. At the door, Mongoose opens the shutters and allows him to pass through unabated. One of the Flotsam girls pulls a quarter from her garter belt. The jukebox starts playing.

Her selection is J3.
Shad:
Shad , having watched the excitement from across the bar, pulls Tootie out from under the table and orders him and Pioneer a beer, as Tootie looks in stunned amazement at Pioneers unrelenting resolve. Selection J3 contunues to play on the jukebox.

...with words like love, and truth, and goodnessss... words like till death us...do part...., I will nev-er LOVE....another.

Take my heart, take my heart, take my heart...(chorus: take my heart) :cry

Shad thinks to himself how the bar can be so crowded, yet I still feel so all alone...

As the bar settles back down to a noisy nornal roar, a mysterious man enters thru the doorway. Dressed in black cloth and lether complete with a matching wide-brimed hat. He walks past the patrons on the dance floor and has a seat at the far end of the bar and orders a wine cooler from Sam. Meanwhile, Buston now has the barmaid on his lap as she scribbles something on his sholder in magic marker.

Tootie has been eyeballing a group of 3 men acting very strangly two tables over and finally speaks up...

See those guys over there, Shad? They have been shuffling a cocktail napkin back and forth between them for the last 30 minutes. Each writing things down at each turn. I wonder what they are up to.

Shad looks across to the table in question just as the mysterious man in black joins them at their table

Im not sure, tootles. Lets keep one good eye on them and see whats up. Have you ever seen any of them here before?

No. But whats even stranger, the 3 guys look really tall compaired to the man in black. They have to be atleast 6'5 each. Think they play professional basketball?

Hard to tell, tootster. Tell ya what... I'll walk past um and see if I can tell what they are doing.

Shad gets up from the table and strolls slowly over twords the pool table. In passing he can see only the back of the man in blacks head and sees them now with several napkins arranged in a patern. A few full napkins and some torn in smaller pieces. Nothing legable can be seen on the napkins themselves, but upon passing, the 3 taller men swipped up the napkins as if hiding something. I placed 2-bits on the pool table and turned to walk back. Upon my second pass, I note one of the tall men in detail as I returned to my seat.

Did you see anything? What were they doing? tell me.. tell me.. TELL ME! :bash

Shhhh... You want the whole bar to hear? All I can tell you for sure is.... the 3 tall guys are not tall atol! Arggg!

you mean.......

You got it....

..they are...

Bingo!........

MIDGETS! All 3 standing on their chairs!

Tootie let out a GASP and took a large swigg from his beer and wiped his mouth on the back of his hand.

What should we do now, Shad?

Nothing... Just wait and watch them is all I can say.

The tention was so thick you could cut it with a knife as Tbar walked past with a smile on his mugg wearing his ToWs T-shirt and spandex shorts. I returned the smile and a salute and smiled even bigger as he passed as I noted on the back of his t-shirt a taped piece of paper that said: "Kick me for FUN and BEERS!" Ahh.. just what I needed to brighten my evening, I thought to myself.

Wasn't long before the 3 midgets and the man in black stood beside the table they had occupied and said a few words then exited the tavern. 2 seconds later, Tootie was rummaging the table where they sat and returned with a scrap of napkin in his hand and placed it before me as he sat back down.

What do you think it means?

Shad examines the torn corner of the napkin in which a portion of the words were torn away and simply said: "pier 39, midnight for Proj. Enig." Then the letters below that: "Eas"

Pioneer:
Pioneer exits the Central Isles Hospital, a bandage covers his heart, protected by a new shirt. He stands in the archway of the infirmary. For years now he has brought his own wounded to the hospital. The nurses there were regularly "bribed" to repair some of the old sailors without noting formal records. This was the first time that Pioneer was a self admission...no records were kept of this visit. From across the car park a quick flash is emitted form the Jeep's headlights where Mongoose has sat waiting in the cold. Turning his jacket up, he crosses and climbs into the passenger seat. The engines cranks up, and the sound of gravel crunches as the jeep pulls out of the car park. The two ride in silence, one fixed on the dimly lit road, the other staring out the window.

The road back into town was narrow and winding. The Central Isles Hospital had been built high on the hill, away from the shore batteries. A single road decends the steep grade, to a lonely T junction just outside of town. The headlights illuminate the 'STOP' sign as Mongoose brings the vehicle to a stsop, and waits. There is no traffic, there are no approaching vehicles. Mongoose sits at the sign, strumming his fingers on the wheel, waiting. Finally, Pioneer flicks his finger to the left, and the jeep moves off, heading back into town, and away from the Red Tide jetty.

You wanna tell me what that was about about?

Pioneer continues to look out of the open window, reluctant to answer his friend.

Not particularly.

Mongoose drives back into town at speed, through the waterfront buildings and past the Central Isles Hotel. At the end of the cobblestone street he brings the jeep to a skidding halt, and turns the motor off. The lights die.

You wouldn't normally beat the daylights out of cheap men in cologne.

Pioneer alights from the vehicle and closes the door. Leaning back in the window he whispers quietly.

I stand up for what I believe in.

Pioneer turns away from the jeep and crosses the street. The wooden shutters slide open lifelessly. He pauses and examines the room, everything is just as it should be. His footsteps are silent against the dim roar of the jukebox. Arriving at his booth, he sees a fresh barcardi and a Kronenburg opposite. Looking up, the sterling silver photo is back where it belongs.
Pioneer:
Pioneer keeps his jacket on and slides into his booth. Beneath his shirt the strain of the bandage across the left breast pocket takes the strain. His faces grimaces as he takes his seat in the corner, back to the wall, under the choosen photos.

Sams has settled down to a gala affair, blilsfully ignorant of what lies outside the four walls. The cheap cologne still hangs in the air, but the only one who seems to notice is Pioneer. Across the room, the offerings have changed. Buxton's hand has been tended by the now off duty bar maid, who has promised to take him home. The Flotsam girls have swelled in numbers, the irrestible charm of the Big Pink Fish was always a lady killer. Now, the harem must number almost a dozen, as each vie for the attention of the Fish, oblivious to the on sight of the world.

I guess a time out period has been good for some.

The bacardi is perfectly mixed in the glass, accompanied only by ice. Three cubes and one of Sams crytal tumblers - normally reserved only for the bistro room - accentuate the lights of the Sams. The dancefloor is swathed in a combination of red and blue, poetic considering the number of Red Tide and Northland ships lost just outside the door. The jukebox plays some old time dance tune, illuminating it's own offspring. On the parquetry floor, several officers and assorted local lasses carry on, some in a circle, others limbs entwinded.

A glint comes off one of the cubes. I move the drink to my left hand, careful not to crimp it. It's been years since that injury, and still the odd occassion arises when I drop a glass. Not as many as I did back then, and whilst not regular, enough to ensure I keep most drinks in my right hand.

The glass catches a brief refelction from behind me. The lights bounce off the sterling silver frame. In the cubes refelection the frame stands out, not as a solid entity but as a shape. A trickle rolls down inside my chest, and I place the glass down. Peering gently inside my jacket I see a red tinge on the fringe of the bandage. The jacket is closed and I reach across my chest, pinning my arm against my jacket.

The truce has gone on now longer than anyone expected, some of the officers are even having trouble remembering what it was like before. The old guys though, guys like Tbar and Flotsam, remember what it was like first time round and how good it was. But now, we have two different persepctives. The truce has been a new beginning for some like Flotsam, for others it has been the end.

As for me, I have no idea when the truce started, I have no idea what brought it about, and I have no idea why my team mates didn't tell me about the truce. And now, I wonder whether it be a truce, or and end.

Hey there Commander, let me take you out on the dancefloor and show you me moves

One of the Flotsam girls has wandered over, and I can't decide if she is drunk with inhibition or pity.

No thanks madam, I'm not one to cheat on my heart.

My face stings as her backhand crosses my cheek. She is affronted at my remarks, but I am undecided as to which part she objects to.

Fine, then I shall find one of my own kind, a typical man who can give me what I want.

She turns on the spot her short skirt riding higher up her waist. As she strides across the floor others stop to examine her stockings. No one is watching me as I lift the bacardi to my lips, hiding what I mumble...

And I shall still be here when your moment is over.

Angel #1:
Angel #1 arrives at the shutters of Sams. The evening shower has moisten her hair, enhancing the beautiful deep red coloring. In the atrium, she unbuttons the black leather jacket which drapes to the floor and hangs it on a spare hook. Pushing open a shutter, she stops and waits for it to close. The jukebox stops playing, and Sam drops a glass behind the bar. The room is silent, as all eyes gape at her in awe.

Striding over to the corner of the bar, Sams pours a glass of the finest red wine, and gently places it on a fine cotton coaster. Reaching for the glass, she sips it, leaving the fainest trace of red lipstick on the rim. Across the room, the Flotsam girls eye her with envy, jealous of her dazzling hair and fine shape.

She crosses over with her glass towards Flotsam. The Big Pink Fish drops his mouth stunned at her beauty. As she approaches, the eyelashes twitter and a rye smile begins to form. Leaning across his table, she gently whispers in his ear.

I owe you one.

Quickly she grasps the half empty beer, and turns her back on Flotsam. The split in her skirt is accentuating her stockings as she turns her back on him. Casually, she pours the remnants of the beer over the Flotsam girl whom slapped Pioneer. The rest of the flock back off, admist cries from the now drowned girl.

This one is on you.

Angel #1 places the now empty beer bottle on the table. The face slapper is now coated in stagnant beer, as the remainder of the Flotsam girls retreat towards their Fish. Returning to the bar, she tosses her long hair over shoulder, cradles her drink and crosses back towards Pioneer. Sliding into the booth opposite him, she acts like nothing has happened.

What was that for?

Clearly she had no idea how to behave like a lady, and she needed to cool off.

Angel #1 raises her glass and toasts Pioneer. Heroes take their lumps but real women know better.

Buxton:
Stop taunting the poor fish. You know he's still due in court for the last time a split skirt is accentuated someone's stockings!

Pioneer:
Pioneer looks around the room. The Server Truce seems to be affecting Sams. Hardly anyon eis in the bar, but it could be because the lights a dim. From his side, a glint on metal catches the light. An explosion reverberates around the bar. The sound of glass breaks on the wooden entry way.

Pioneer has just shot out the red light over the doorway.

Buxton:
"Hey, what'd you do that for? I thought the red light gave this place a certain classy ambience."
Angel#1:
Angel #1 looks at Pioneer's eyes and detects a scent of Bacardi. Reconising that he only has eyes for one woman, Angel #1 gets up and walks away from the booth... before someone takes a shot at him.
Buxton:
Even his eyes smell of Baccardi? You really have got to change your drink, pal!

Pioneer:
Sam arrives at the booth and gently places a clear liquid tumbler on the coaster. The glass has a blue smiley cat resembling a smurf on the side, and a piece of fruit on hanging over the lip. I look across at Buxton to see him raising a similar glass.

Gin.

The clear liquid looks shaken, not stirred. I raise the glass and sip the contents, before gulping it back. It quickly leaves my lips and sprays the opposite side of the booth. A bacardi antidote is quickly downed and serenity returns. Across the room I wave at Buxton, using only some of my fingers.

No wonder you smurfs can't win a war. Your drinks double as antifreeze.
Pioneer:
Pioneer looks out the arched stained glass window. For years, Sams has always faced south towards the Central Isles Brewery. The cobblestone street that lay between has been trundled by many sailors beforehand. In an era, now verging on mythical times, the original buccaneers, The Betas, would spend their shore leave communiting between the two, when the brewery tours only operated when Sams was closed. But today, the view has changed.

On a small notice board at the end of street, Town Ordinances were posted at the crossroads. Mounted on the side of the brewery, the Ordinances decreed changes to Town Planning, including rejuvenating the dockside district. Now. many months after the final objection period, the changes have come about, swiftly.

Sams walks over, and drops another glass of clear liquid on the table before me.

You like the changes?

What changes?

Sam smiles at me, the silver of a capped tooth accentuating his Island heritage smile. He retreats behind the bar, and puts the drink tray down. Leaning back, he crosses his arms and laughs.

Commander, you cannot see, but it does not matter. The Central Isles Truce may exist, but Sir, Sams will always be home to Iron Wolves.

I'll drink to that.

Pioneer:
Pioneer looks around, now aware of the subtle changes. A small gold plaque is mounted in the foyer wall. He walks over and reads the gothic inscription.

- Tbar, March 5.

Pioneer:
Pioneer rises and crosses over to a small bookshelf Sam has near the cloak room. Filled with hand crafted leatherbound books, some papryus maps and a few odd trinkets as bookends, Pioneer runs his fingers across the spines, before selecting a large black volume. The dust glistens on the embossed cover - "The History of the Central Islands Conflict."

Scanning the index, he runs his fingers down the alphabetical listing, until finally reaching the subject he was looking for. Flicking to the correct page, he reads the text entry.

Tootie

adj.,2. a state of grandiose self importance. ("He's got a Tootie attitude.") Refer 3.

n., 3. Former member of Northland, Red Tide and Westland. Awarded Redbacks Bounty. K1 skipper with social skills of a small annoying insect.

Argon:
Argon is seen climbing on a box of soap outside of Sam's

Ranger notices and says I believe that?s the closest I have ever seen Ole Argon to soap.

The crowd laughs with agreement but Argon doesn't seem to notice.

Argon begins to speak...

"Following every sunset... there dawns a new day and that day will soon be here. We shall once again hear the friendly banter that seems to drown out the cries of war. We will once again battle fiercely amongst one another only to sit and tip a glass to our foes for a job well done! From every battle emerges a victory of friendship. For there are no losers or winners here, only the closeness brought about by camaraderie and need for mutual destuction."

Argon is seen throwing pages 2, 3 and 4 of his speach to the ground and mumbling "that's enough I'm parched".

Hey Sam I worked up a thirst out here... How about a beer?

Argon steps off the box with his one good eye staring off to sea...and enters the Tavern like a blind man in the comfort of his home. He is carrying some rinkled documents tucked under his arm bearing only the words ?Enigma Top Secret?

Pioneer:
The view from the courtyard lets me look down the main throughfare towards the docks. The rain has started to tumble off the roofs, and puddles form between the cobblestone road bricks. A single gaslamp lights the corner, and from behind the corner, a tall man emerges and heads towards Sams. Black jacket, black hat, black boots...the Man in Black. He approaches and sits without invitation.

The Prodigal Child hath returned.

The news sends a chill through my spine. The man in black leaves one envelope on the table.

It is here, what do you want with it?

Pioneer is no longer sure, and waves the envelope away, it would be what Mongoose would do. The Man in Black waits, collects his mail, rises and quietly leaves as he arrived. Heading up the street, I recognise that when the moment presented itself, I could not stoop to take revenge.

Mongoose:
:::a single shot is heard outside:::: followed by a bone chilling scream ...then dreadful silence::::::

A whisper could be heard as the meloncholy crowd staggers outside. Rushing down dimely lit paths, with hearts racing, and out of breath they stop short in the distance of a lifeless body surrounded by authorities joting down clues from local pedestrians nearby.

"To late for this lad," mutters Pioneer. "let's get back to Sam's".

:::a second shot pierces the cold air:::::

:::Over here cries another...:::

A voice nearby points to a smoking derringer and a torn black overcoat. A familiar envelope partially opened was nearby.

The crowd panics and scatters...

Pioneer calmy ponders the mysteries walking back to Sam's.

Swinging open the doors of Sam's, Pioneer trys to piece it all together....then he notices....the envelope is missing with an empty glass in it's place. With his head in his hands, he focuses on a freshly etched insignia into his table......"Assasins".
Pioneer:
The left hand shutter of Sam's has been pushed back, it remains open for anyone who wishes to enter to do so. The foyer, tinged with the single red light has an open closet to the side. Jackets line the hangers with their arms drapping towards the floor. Most of the jackets carry the evidence of war, others carry the promise of a future. Only one carries the smell of perfume, a perfume I recognise.

The moment, hath arrived, and suddenly, I feel compelled to look for the content of the banished envelope. A gulp of air into my lungs seethes the throat with the wafting cigar smells. Without touching the shutters, I enter, and immediately, Sam catches my attention.

You're not going to believe who...

I cut the tubby man short.

I know, others have told me and I can sence it.

The eyes from the adversaries and supporters who know speak volumes, some watching my movements, others looking to for a rush. Not just yet for either. The jukebox flashes quietly as I stare at it across the room. My right shoulder is nudged slightly and I can feel the breath of a tall man at my shoulder.

The wisdom of Solomon, the strength of David, and the backup of the buddies.

A smile trickles across my face. I cross the floor and head straight for the jukebox. My favourite is there, and I activate the keys - J3. Turning, Tbar and Mongoose are already sitting in the booth when Bux arrives with four tonics on a platter. He dishes out the glassware, and waits. I opt to not look for the envelope again, and take my seat with the warriors. Tbar lifts and charges his glass.

A toast, to integrity.

Four glasses sound crisp as the first chorus starts...

Angel#1:
Angel #1 brushes aside the open shudder and strids gracefully towards the corner booth. Across the room, the sounds of her black high heels, stockings brushing past each other and the glom of leather causes one of the bar flys to pass out.

Approaching the corner booth, Buxton and Mongoose both rise from their seats at the end. Elegantly, she slides across next to tbar and takes his drink. Flicking the fruit off, she speaks in a lowered tone...

The man in the street, apparently he had information. You gentlemen wouldn't know anything about that, would you?

The four commanders look at each other, Mongoose is the only one who doesn't look suprised.

I'm looking for the contents of the envelope.

Mongoose breaks out in a guilty sweat.

It could be hazardous to you health, to retain that letter. I'm sure I could guide you to someone to help...relieve you of the burden.

Angel #1 opens her jacket to reveal a shiny sidearm.

Mr Smith and Weston are most anxious to resolve this matter.

Angel #1 rises and crosses the table. Leaning over, she gently kisses Mongoose on the side of his face, her red lipstick leaving a heart shaped mark. Across the room, Sam wonders if she is an Assassin, or just a mercenary. Angel #1 heads to the bistro and exits onto the street through a side door. Her image is engulfed by the evening fog as she heads for the pier.

I'm not sure if it's the humitity in Sams or the remembrance of a young crush of years gone by.

Tactifully, Mongoose nods with a grin and flips on his cap and makes way for his escape.

He looks away giving Drench a gentlemans salute. While reaching for the door with his chisled frame, he quietly exits with music beginning to play in the background, and the sounds of glass echoing a lonely mans dream.

Angel#1:
Angel #1 walks into the bar. Everyone is looking at her, obviously the word about her last sightings has been spread around. She stops, looks around, and then goes to get a drink.

I'll have a bacardi thanks Sam.

Sam reaches beside him to get the nearly empty drink. As Sam pours the bacardi into the triangular glass, he tries to get information from the her about her last apperance.

So, what have you been up to lately? Anything interesting?

Lets call it, organising.

Sam stops looking at the drink and puts his eyes on the Angel. Sam is intimidated by her last comment. He looks back at the drink, finishes pouring it then hands if over to her.

Just put it on Pioneer's tab.

Angel #1 walks over to an empty booth. The smell of alcohol is in the air. As she continues, she catches the eyes of Mongoose and changes her direction of walk. Mongoose wipes the sweat from his upper lip. Angel #1 sits herself across from him. She takes a sip of her drink. Mongoose knows she has something to tell him.

Am I really safe, sitting here alone with you, Angel?

Depends how your willing to take my...

"I don't know what your talking about. I have nothing for you."

I have taken those matters into my own hands. I have found what I want and I am merely acting on the request given.

Mongoose's face goes pale and leans forward so no one can hear what he has to say.

You have the envelope?

Angel #1 ignores his last comment.

"What I want to say, is watch your back. You, Pioneer, tbar and Bux. Watch your back.

The Goose's stomach suddenly ties itself in knots.

"Tell me more..."

Angel #1 takes a second sip of her drink.

The consequences, if you fail, will be a kiss from a gun. A kiss from a gun

Angel #1 walks out of the room, leaving her half empty drink still on the table, across from Mongoose.

Mongoose places his hand on his face, wondering just what she was meant...

Saturday Night At Sams

#2
Pioneer:
Pioneer notes the "accord" between Mongoose and the Angel. From the pay phone, it certainly appears as though Mongoose might need some more life insurance. Exitting from the phone box, one of the bar girls rushes to Pioneer's side.

Did you see that, she threatened him!

NoNo, she merely announced her pressence. Clealry, there's more to this little rendevous than meets the eye.

Leaving the waitress behind, Pioneer walks off and take his spot in the corner booth. On the table, lays an empty brown envelope. Torn open.
Mongoose:
Mongoose walking towards the docks to board the Princess Diana Luxury liner for another wonderful relaxing vacation ...notices a crowd gathering nearby in an alley.

Curiousity get's the most of him and he meanders over to investigate. It's the Angel in Black Leather unconcious. Help is there as she's dazed wondering if she lost the envelope in the scuffle.

Angel, obviously delirious mumbling something about being in sams.

Mongoose announces she must of been dreaming b/c i just left there an hour after her.

The local bob jots down some notes and lets Mongoose continue on his way boarding the liner and looking back while other passengers awe the beauty of the ship.

:::finally some peace an quiet:::

No envelopes....No Sams....No problems....

Just to make sure, Mongoose pinches his own skin to make sure he's not dreaming ...nope.... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh this is the life::::
Angel#1:
Angel #1 's eyes opened. Everyone is huddled around her. The faces on some people suddenly turn white as if they saw a ghost.

"He, he ,he....... he took the bait." Angel #1 whispered to herself.

Questions of are you ok? and Does your head hurt? filled the air, she had tricked everyone.

Angel #1 jumped up and looked around. Her trap had worked. The fake envelope was out in the public. Someone obviously knew she had the original. When she closely looked around, some of her girlfriends disguised as show girls were huddled around Pioneer. Obviously they were desperate, but they quietly nodded, signalling to Angel #1 where Mongoose had gone, before continuing to drowl over Pioneer.

"Alright, alright, nothing to see here, everyone clear the way. You can go now!" shouted one of the police officers.

When everyone had left, the police officer had approached the Angel and said:

"The Goose took the bait. That information he has. he'll think its vital, but really is nothing compared to whats going to happen on the....."

"Shoosh!! People will hear things! Mongoose will regret being my ally then robbing me. He will pay soon enough."

The police officer, being a 'goodie', didn't quite understand what she meant, but he knew it wasn't good news.

Angel #1 ran in the direction Mongoose was last seen heading to. Without being seen, she boarded the Princess Diana Luxury liner, perfect. Her next crime was, now, in a matter of hours.
Mongoose:
..entering his suite, Mongoose, relics all the comforts of home, Jacuzzi, exercise room, king size water bed, oak flooring freshly waxed, and the scent of fresh roses blowing in from the overhanging quarterdeck.

Ahhhhhh First Class is Definately for me.

A message, for "DeShay" was laying on a pillow.

::::that's odd nobody knew I was ... ::::

A knock on the door and another note quickly races under.

:::Two messages?::::

Mongoose cautiously opens the one labeled Deshay.

DeShay,

Be alert, all is not well. I overheard one of the gals here gossiping. Agent Angel, is onboard. She thinks you double crossed her. Take care ol'e friend. We'll talk again at Sams.

Pioneer.

:::I'm retired and inactive::::Why is all this coming back to haunt me?::::

The second note had already sent a familar perfume chilling the air. Opening the contents was gracefully written, "Mongoose, we need to talk, Dinner 7pm at Quizzley's Cafe on deck 3.
Angel#1:
Angel #1 finally found her suite. Attached to the door was an invitation. She took it inside. On the bed layed her suit cases. The showgirls had already packed the Angel's clothes and boarded them on the ship. The security on this luxury liner mustn't be very secure, as one suit case was full of clothes, the other with 'personal gear'. Everything was going to plan.

"Whats up with this invitation?" The Angel wondered while pointing at it.

Angel #1 opened it, ripping through the wax sealed envelope. As she revealed what was inside, she remembered the last time she opened a very important letter. Angel #1 quietly chuckled then continued. Inside layed gold colored paper with fancy writing on it. It was obviously something important. Angel #1 read it:

'You are accordingly invited to the annual Luxury Ball. This is a formal event so all passengers are required to come. Prizes all through the night including 'Best Dressed Couple' and 'Best Tango'. Who will win?

TIME: 7.30 pm - 11.30 pm.

DATE: Saturday, 14th of June, 2003.

RSVP: Friday 13th of June, 2003.'

"Hmmmmm, lots of people, all passengers will be there. I might meet my good friend Mongoose. He'll just die when he sees my dance moves!"
Mongoose:
The siren was ear piercing, followed by a commanding voice over the speaker, "Fire, Fire, Fire, this is not a drill, I repeat this is not a drill...*Ding,*Ding,*Ding,*Ding!!

My 18 years experience in the U.S. Navy kicked in immediately bringing back survival training.

Panic engulfed the passangers with children crying and parents calling out names and barking out orders. Crew members were scurrying about.

I could now see black smoke comming from the bow, visibility was limited. Shadowy figures franticly moving around trying to reach safety. Immediatley, a cry for help is heard. Ripping off my shirt and wrapping it around my eyes and nose I enter the thick cloud of people coughing. A damsel laying on the deck apparently overwhelmed with inhaling dangerous fumes. Quickly I lift the small frame and make way for the starboard side. Laying her on the cover of a lifeboat, her body is lifeless. My fear is she's gone. A last ditch effort I respond by giving her CPR. My God!!! Don't let this young lady DIE!!! She bolts, coughing and sputerring, turning to one side.

"Are you okay?"

I think so, ::cough:::

"Did you see anyone else"

I can't remember, can't think straight

"I better go forward to look for others"

No! Please don't leave me

The young lady quite shaken up, wraps her arms around my neck holding on as if some great fear was in the mist. Her brown watery eyes crying out for comfort.

"Come on let's go find some medical attention for those burns."

The captain had already radioed for assistance and Helos where already dispatched. Soon on the horizon, the sounds of choppers could be heard.

"Let's get you on one of those helos. They'll take you back to the island where's there's better medical facilities."

Will you come with me?

"Ummmm ... it's probably better if I stay here and help"

I can't go to a hospital, they'll take me back

"Take you back where?"

The young voice, explains she's an illegal alien and would be eventually deported back to her country.

"Well, come on let's board the helo, I have some friends at a place called Sam's that will help"

a smile of relief forms and she falls asleep in his arms

::::Gosh, I don't even know her name. But she sure is beautiful to look upon.:::::Ahhhhhh:::: I can't let myself get involved:::

Flashing back, Mongoose remembers the tragic mysterious car accident of losing his wife and children four years ago.

"Poor girl is still asleep,"

Mongoose brushes her hair away from her face as she cuddles closer

The helo makes way for the LZ when hospital attendants take her from his arms. The pilot asks, "Sir, do you want to go back to the ship or stay here?

I...think i'll ...

Having been lulled to sleep by the melodic slurping of my sub's twin propellors slowly revolving...I dream of happier times..of sunny days and cheerful returns to port...the thrill of the hunt..now slowly patroling...not really for hunting anymore...but because its all thats left...this boat....the sea...and the cre....i feel the dream slipping away..strange garbled words filter into my thoughts as i come back to reality...my second officer is bent over shaking my shoulder to wake me

Yes what is it Number one.

Sir you remember the liner we sighted five hours ago?

Of course..the Princess Diana...why?

Well About ten minutes ago they began to transmit a distress signal...apparently they are on fire

A slight twinge of anxiety shot through my back as i quickly sat up and followed the second officer to the control room

What kind of shape are they in?

Well the crew tried to contain the blaze but it got out of hand and is spreading...Rescue helos have already made a trip or two but they wont be able to do very much except for the badly wounded

I lean towards not rushing to the stricken boat...despite its situation....this sub is old and its engines tired...but remembering the night in the bar and a comment overheard about an old friend taking a cruise rises in my mind

How far away are we?

About four hours at 12 knots

Four hours wont do....it must be two or less.

But cap..

:::I cut him off:::I know...just trust me on this.

Thoughts of the outcome of my decision race through my head as i reach for the klaxon lever and the shipwide comm's

The shipwide light on the radio box lights up as soon as the switch snicks into position...a slight crackel and hiss is heard

This is the captain....im sorry to wake you but something urgent has come up....just a few minutes ago the liner Princess Diana began sending a distress signal....they are on fire and it is getting out of control...im asking your assistance to get us there faster...i know this boat is tired...but we can do it...i want an extra crew on the engines...we will give the maximum....its been a long time...but we will get there......ALL HANDS........MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS!!

In a split second i let go of the comms switch and throw the GQ lever over into its on position

Instantly the klaxon comes to life and screams out its call to action...:::BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG::::Men scramble out of their bunks and put on shoes...the entire boat is full of excitement...the first in a long time...men ready for action...one by one the compartments radio in as being ready

Number one......surface the boat.....steer 343 degrees....all ahead flank....post a watch...ill be in the radio shack!

Jawol capitan

The outline of a old uboat appears amid froth and bubbles...the whine of the starter motors is fast replaced by the slow chugata-chugata of the diesel...but that increases to a fevered roar as the engineers put the engines to their hardest test yet....onward the boat pushes...toward the burning liner...towards people in trouble....towards friends
Angel#1:
Angel #1 , as organising her belongings, heard a distress signal. An employee wearing a white suit and a gold name tag bashed open the door.

"Get outta here!! Your close to the fire! Get out!"

Angel #1 quickly grabbed her favourite gun and stashed it into her jacket. As Angel ran down the corridor and towards the deck, she had trouble running. Every gun known to man was someone on her body and, the Angel hoped she would use them all!

She arrived at the deck. As she was looking everywhere to see what was happening, she saw Mongoose, helping an injured woman. 'So typical of the man' thought Angel #!. As she continued to scan the area around her, she reconised a man. He was tall, dressed in a tattered blue shirt and looked African from the color of his skin. Angel #1 thought for a minute or two and remembered, this was the same man who crowded around her when she was 'un-concious'. But what was he doing there? As she was thinking this over through all the havoc, the man rushed off to the other side of the luxury liner. Angel #1 looked around again and realised there was really nothing interesting here so she decided to play detective and hunt this man down. As she jogged to the direction the black man went, she reached into her left side of her jacket and touched her gun. It was only small but lethal. As she did this, the Angel heard the piercing sound of a gun shot. As she arrived to the scene, her gun already out for self defence, a young girl was lying on the floor, helpless. Her eyes gazed into Angel #1 eyes and for a moment, a warm but nice tingle inside her gave her the chills. As Angel #1 gazed down her, blood was flowing out of her chest, just below the heart. Red filled the area around her and the blood trickled out of the young girl like a river. She had been shot. Angel #1 kneeled down and put her gun behind her. She softly said:

"You'll be ok"

Angel #1 finished, and the wounded girl, with her last ounce of strength, said emotionally and slowly:

"Kill my killer, Lena"

She died, right in front of Angel #1.

Angel #1 stood up again. She was mad. Her anger showed on her face.

" Which way did he go, which way did he go?" Angel #1 asked a few bystanders.

They all pointed in the same direction.

"Down those stairs, the stairs!" a few of them said.

Angel #1 ran down the stairs. She looked in every room she could find, and she came up to the dining room. 2 men were standing across the room near the black piano. As if they were waiting for her, they waved to her.

"What do you want?" Angel #1 demanded.

"We are here to kill you, Lena." said the taller man.

"Why do you call me Lena?" she said, confused.

Angel #1 thought hard as she said this. She thought of her days in Russia. The Angel had been apart of an Assasin group, where her secret team name was 'Lena' meaning death and destruction. Angel #1 was highly trained and highly lethal. She had been apart of a secret team to bomb the Russian Government headquarters. She had succeeded, but when asked to bomb a fellow friend, she refused. Angel #1 had escaped from Russia and arrived one day at Sams. This is where it had taken her.

"You should have killed him!! Now, you will pay!"

"I refuse to kill an ally of mine," shouted Angel #1, "and now, you have taken an innocent life, for what? What does it give you? What do you get out of it?!"

The second man spoke. His voice was much lower than the first man and when he walked slightly closer to the Angel, a scar across the right side of his face appeared in the light.

"Remember me, Lena?"

"YOU!!"

Angel #1 decided to herself that this was the last straw. Angel #1 quickly and swiftly grabbed her gun from inside her jacket and pulled the trigger.

One

Two

The two men fell to the floor with a Thump! As Angel #1 left, she looked back and saw them surronded by red, evil blood. One had a bullet in his head, the other in his neck.

She had finally won.
Mongoose:
The young beauty awakes groggy when she?s passed from his arms to the arms of medical personnel. She Turns to look back .

Aren?t you going to take me in?

By now, the static from the helo?s radio was clear enough to recognize reports of gunfire on board the Princess Diana. It did appear the fire was now under control with the help of an unknown crew of submariners already being celebrated as heros. Reports estimate her back in port early tommorow morning. Damage was minimal, and the scheduled dance will be held on board with special invitations sent the to Subs Captain and crew.

Yes, of course

Walking through automatic doors, they headed for the emergency ward. Mongoose followed the EMT's like a hypnotized puppet recalling the events that had taken place.

1. The Princess Diana will be back in port soon, and how will I get my gear without being gunned down by that stalking Angel in Black? Perhaps she was gunned down? The thought sent a sigh. WHAT? Do I have feelings for her? I couldn?t possibly. :::I got to admit she is cute:::

2. Who was I going to meet at Quizzley?s Caf??

3. How did the fire onboard start anyway?

4. Who is this other woman I?m attracted to that I don?t even know?

5. I did make a promise to help her, but perhaps I should duck out now before things get more complicated.

I wish I had someone I could trust to talk to. The only person close was Pioneer and he was on the other side of the island.
Pioneer:
Meanwhile, back at Sams, a messenger bursts through the front door. Huffing, he looks in many directions, as all eyes in the place desend upon him. Finding his object, the messenger bee lines for the corner booth.

A message sir, a ship has been crippled!

Pioneer looks at the brief message outlining the last transmission and location of the dying liner - barely out of sight from the Central Isles. An eerie though races through his mind - "could this be the end of the truce?"

Buttoning his coat Pioneer heads out the door, with masses following his stride to the pier. Alongside the wooden front, lies U3, engines warm. No sooner is the Captain on board does the hatch close, and the sub lifts her lines from the shore. A dark shadow crossed the harbour before submerging from sight. On shore, an old man spoke quietly.

With all those ships in the area, you would hope that there are no accidents out there.

Someone in the crowd thinks they recognise the old man as Tbar.
Angel#1:
Walking up to the top deck, throngs of people were moving around. The scuttlebut between passengers was that the fire was out, but the ship was no longer moving; and defenceless. Standing at the stern rail, the quarter-moon in the western sky reflected on the calm waters. As the Angel watched the currents, thinking about her last actions, her deep brown eyes saw a menacing signal.

A trail of bubbles passed within feet of the ships rudder. The torpedo had missed.

Angel #1 whispered under her breath...

"This ship's dead"
Mongoose:
It's Friday the 13th, and Mongoose has been in the waiting room for some time his mind a blur. Listening to conflicting radio broadcasts of the fate of the Princess Diana and his quest to answer many unsolved mysteries. Finally the doctor arrives ...

Sir, she wants to see you. I think she'll be fine. Right this way.

Hey, looks like they've taken care of you.

I guess. I wanted to thank you for saving my life back there on the ship.

Oh ...anyone would of done the same. You know I don't even know your name?

Jennifer Ryker, daughter of the notorious Captain Francis "IXIL" Ryker.

Why does that name sound so familiar?

He's owns the Northland ShipBuilding Company.

NORHTLAND!!!!!

Mongoose is taken by surprise. His feeling for a Northland Captains Daughter only complicates things.

Here's the address of Sams, when you....I mean if you ...errrrr.....ever want to stop in and say hi.

Mongoose shaken up the news can't find the words

:::::I can't believe it...she's a Northlander:::: This will never work out. I can't be seen with her.:::::

Mongoose steps outside stopping to correct his bearing...where was he going now? A once old girlfriend on board was out to kill him. His current flame is the daughter of one of the most hated Captains of the Northland Fleet. Talk about going from bad to worse. He heads towards Sams on foot kicking stones and carrying the burdens of many on his shoulders.
Drenched:
A WHAT!!??

Yes sir im positive that it was a torpedo.

Why in the world would someone want to torpedo the most luxurious liner on the seas?...to action again i suppose

Very well...

Questions fly through my mind once more as i flick on the voice box

All hands.....man battle stations quiet....

No gongs this time...men silenty slide out of beds and wearing soft shoes do a fast walk to their stations

All compartments switch to talker's only...turn off voice boxes...rig for silent running.

I walk through the hatch to the sonar shack

You know what to do...let me know the moment you have something.

Yes captain

Now to get ready for an encounter....I make my way to the bow torpedo room

How many of those new setups do you have?

Three sir

Ok.....load tubes 2 and 4 with them...keep the last one ready though.

Yes sir

Now it goes mental.....i wonder whos on the other end.
Angel#1:
Angel #1 walks away from the edge of the boat after sighting that torp. Why would they be fireing on this ship for? The Angel realises, someone must know she on here.

Angel #1 walked up to the supervisor, he looked like he knew things.

"Excuse me sir, can I go back to my room now? It in sector G3, I think." The Angel asked.

"Ahhhh, I'm sorry madam, no one is allowed near that area."

"Oh, ok, sorry to waste your time." The Angel said.

"Have a good night" the tall man said.

Angel #1 walked away from him, out of sight. She had ignored everything he said. As she walked down to the corridor, she felt her jacket to check the exact position of her gun, just in case she had to 'negotiate.'

She came down to the T junction. The Angel remembered that her cabin was to the left. She peeped around the corner carefully, just in case anyone was there.

From just one glance, Angel #1 observed what was there.

"Two men on the left, 3 on the right. All armed." Angel #1 whispered to herself."

Angel #1 got her gun out quickly, turned around the corner and was about to 'negotiate' when no one was there. They had left, or so she seemed. Angel #1 placed her gun back into her jacket and walked softly but quickly to her room. The door was slightly opened. The Angel presumed she accidently left it open from rushing out from the fire. Angel #1 tried to open the door. But something was blocking it. Was it a cubboard? No, they were in the opposite room. She tried to open it again, this time with more force. It worked. As Angel #1 walked into the room, she noticed something red on her white bed sheets.

"Oh bummer! I just washed them too!!"

As Angel #1 turned around to shut the door, she felt a sharp pain in her stomach.

"Oh dear Lord!!! Not you, they couldn't have shot you Robbie! NOOO!! I REFUSE TO ADMIT IT!!" Shouted Angel #1. So loud, that the top deck could've heard it.

Angel #1 started to cry. Her best friend whom she left in Russia had a bullet in the middle of his head. Before Angel #1's first tear dropped to the floor, she fainted, hitting her head hard on the floor.
Pioneer:
Pioneer 's eyes of steel were fueled by the 'Rig for Red' light. The U3's captain was reknown for his stealth. The engines had been stopped for several minutes now, but the sub moved slowly as he made subtle changes. His knowledge of the currents and thermal dynamics were unparalleled in these waters. Eventually, the radio man broke the silence.

She's stopped, about 3000yards.

The momentary pause - and then the order.

Up periscope.

The scope came up but Pioneer stopped it before a full extentsion. The sweat started to run.

She's stopped indeed, alongside the liner. ohmy.gif

The U3's prey, was active. The liner cast a soft glow on the sea, but from the darkness of the starboard side, a lifeboat was lowered to the inidentified submarine.
Angel#1:
Angel #1 woke up to her amazement that she wasn't in her cabin on the ship any more. She was in a small room, a bit bigger than a closet. It was dark and smelt like moth balls. The Angel couldn't see anything, so she went on her hands and knees and felt around. A hairy feeling blanket had been discarded on the floor as well as her gun across the other side of her (hastily getting picked up) and a smooth texture which felt like it was paper. Angel #1 stood up properly, she felt all the walls around her and managed to find the door handle. She opened the door and stepped out. The light from the outside lit up the room she was just in. It was a totally empty room. No shelves, no nothing. As she turned around, Angel #1 was about ready stay back in the room because she was surronded by Japanese people who looked like they were taking control of a sub. The Angel quickly ran out of the room, avoiding being seen. She had been on one of these subs before, so she had no troubles finding her way to the top deck. But it was jammed. Obviously she was underwater.

"Ka wan torpedio, ka wan torpedio!" A young Japanese man shouted.

Angel #1 's mouth went wide open. Torpedo? Did she hear that right? Torpedio sounded alot like torpedo. She didn't know alot of Japanese, just knew how to threaten people. Angel #1 knew one thing. She was captured by the Japanese and the Diana ship was going down, very, very soon.

"Oh, lord! Mongoose, all those innocent passengers, gone in a matter of time. This war will not be over by the next commercial break..."
Drenched:
Captain i have a contact.....wait......now two.....two possible contacts...

Ok sonar....what can you tell me about our friends out there.

Well i believe both to be submarines...one is moving...i can hear its engines....strange sound though.....its not a newer boat..and its quite noisy..

What about the other one?

Well thats where im not sure....i THINK theres a contact there...theres some thermals so it messes with the hyrdophones...but im sure i hear some flow noises.....IF it is a sub..its very quiet...a well disciplined crew too.....IF its a sub.

Hmmmmm.....can you get an idea of the bearing and speed?

Well..the flow noise is slowing moving in the direction of the liner....however it seems the noisy sub has stopped along side her.

Up scope!

The highly oiled metal tube silenty hissed up into position.

I could just see the sub sitting next to the liner...too close for torpedos....but who shot at the liner....one known sub....possibly another....who to go after?...my scopes up too long

Down scope!

The scope slides back into its stowed position

Sonar...anything new?

Im sure that quiet one is a sub....i hear a hot noise from it...maybe a dropped wrench or tool...no signs of any hostile action....the noisy sub is quite buisy though...lots of sounds...men moving around...doors closeing and opening...sounds like they are transferring something.

Right now i think that active sub is more of a threat...but im not sure about the silent one...torps no good at this range....may have to go guns

Ok lets keep an eye on both of them for a little while
Angel#1:
Angel #1 raced to any room she could find. There was a small room, the telegram room. 'Perfect' thought the Angel.

Angel #1 opened the door slowly, to check if anyone was in there. There were 2 dead bodies on the floor, still with headphones on, obviously the Japanese people had shot them. What startled the Angel was that they looked like people from England. Were they coming to save the Diana? Who knows.

"I'll send an emergency signal to the Diana." Angel #1 softly said to herself.

Angel #1 sat down on the chair. She took the headphones off one of the dead men that were near her chair. Angel #1, while she was in Russia, had already learnt to send a telegram, so she had no trouble sending a message.

'Japanese to torpedo The Diana. SOS. Act immidiately'

Angel #1 felt proud of herself. She did not want Mongoose or for that matter, anyone dieing just because of the Japanese. The Angel also decided to send a telegram to the land, to tell them to send destroyers out.

'SOS. The Diana getting torpedoed. Act now! Send destroyers!'

Angel #1 finished both her telegrams. As she got up, she decided to examine the dead bodies. They were both shot in the neck, both young, both innocent. The Angel heard a few Japanese voices as some people ran past the door. Something had happened! Had they been shot at? Angel #1 had to get off this ship, quick!
Pioneer:
Morse code intercept sir, no vessel of origin.

Pioneer read the torn piece of paper, before crumpling it into his pocket. The dual messages failed to coherce any sign of emontion from the skipper. The threat against the liner was unknown, the source unknown. Patrols from the Central Isles were regular, but would they investigate, or were they being lured to the seabed. The urge to surface was intense, but not enough.

Contacts sir, two of them. High speed screws at 90 degrees, and I have a submerged contact crossing between us and the liner.

The liner was stopped, an unknown sub alongside. A second unidentified sub in the water, and an approaching surface vessel. Counting the U3, four military and one civilian inside the Central Isles Waters, that he knew of. The order was given in hushed tones.

Battlestations. Flood one and four, quietly. Keep outer doors closed.

Gunfire sir. Distant. Maybe from the approaching ship, but it's travelling too fast to hit anything. It's heading straight for the liner.

Pioneer looked at his watch. Sunset was approaching, he had to wait. But the wait would bring the dark, and the dark, would make the chase harder. He whispered, but the entire bridge heard him.

If that sub starts it's engines and goes to dive...blow it out of the water.
Drenched:
Sir radio intercept from the sub...seems to be a distress signal....it says the japanese are going to torpedo the diana

Very Well

That means someone....someone on our side is on that sub...we need to act

Number one bring us QUIETLY along side that submarine....

Aye sir

I tap the voice talkers shoulder and take the mic from him

Attention all talkers...inform you sections that i will be needing a boarding party of 15 men...arm them with weapons from the locker and have them assemble in the after torpedo room near the escape trunk

10 minutes pass....our sub sits silently below and next to the japanese sub....im now in the after torpedo with the men

Ok everyone lock and load...use the tear gas right away in the conn and take out anyone wiht guns who threatens us...watch out for any civillians...minimal collateral damage is the key....we go in five minutes

My pulse quickens as i load the tompson sub-machine gun and stow a few gas grenades into my jacket...were ready
Flotsam:
This is beginning to look like a job for Argon...

" Sink 'em all & let god sort 'em out " lol
Angel#1:
Angel #1 wanted to get off this ship, fast. It depended on her life. The Angel looked outside the telegram room, no-one was in sight, she couldn't ever hear anyone. She aimed to run fast to the engine rooms, maybe she could mess something up there. As Angel #1 ran, avoiding all the doors down the corridor she came to the 'Engine room'. She opened the door, got her gun out, and pointed it in the room.

"Everyone get up!!"

They knew what she was saying, even if it was in another language apart from their's.

"Please...... do not hurt us."

"You know English?"

"Yes, I also know Japanese. I translate the two languages!"

Angel #1 had no feelings for the people on this boat. She waved her gun and the crew moved to the side. At the escape hatch she grabbed a burly engineer and pointed to the hatch...with her gun. Instinctly, the engineer opened the hatch. Another wave and the crew moved further back, as she climbed inside the chamber. A loud diesel started.

The motors! She's trying to leave! omg:

Angel #1 wrestled with the outer hatch. Once free, the cold sea water started to pour in. A large gulp of air, and she pushed herself laterally away from the ship, and the swirl from the props. The cast shadow began to move off as she swam for a lifebouy throw from the Diana. As she clambered towards the liners decking, a glance behind revealed the sub was already starting to dive.
Drenched:
Sir the sub has submerged....but it sounds like theres something in the water

Have the boarding party wait here.......up scope

The scope slides up

There seems to be someone in the water......have gun crews stand by the hatches......i will need three men....a lifeline....a white flag and some lights....SURFACE all ahead 2/3... head in were going to rescue whoever that is

Aye sir

Sonar watch those subs would you

YEs sir

A sub appears through bubbling water and closes in on the person in the water.....a white flag of truce appears on the mast and lights illuminate the night searching for this person
Pioneer:
Two subs sir!!! One diving, the other coming up to the surface.

Orders captain?

Pioneer knew the command, as did the crew even before he paused before issuing.

10 degrees right rudder, open outer doors, range to the submersing sub?

1200 yards, she's gonna track right across our bow.

Pioneer pressed his stopwatch, waited and pressed again. He showed the face to his XO, who nodded. The XO issued the firing solution, and waited for the Captains order.

Fire four.

The U3 vibrated as the electric torpedo was thrust out of the boat. Both the Captain and the XO pressed their stopwatches and counted off. At 1250 yards and 2000yards away from the liner, the torpedo slammed into the submersable. The soundman removed his headphones to the sound of bulkheads collapsing, and the water on the surface boiled angrily.

Come to periscope depth, make a very wide pass around the debrie, put some distance between us and the liner.

The guests on the liner watched the explosion admist a naval background. With engines disabled, the Diana was helpless as the woman that the crew had plucked from the icy waters. Alongside, another sub had surfaced, throwing a bright light on the Diana. The U3 was already out of range.
Angel#1:
Angel #1 arrived on the Diana. She was happy to finally be on here. One of the strangers on the boat, who had obviously seen the whole thing came up to the Angel and wrapped her around with a soft, warm blanket.

"Thank you" The Angel said.

Angel #1 was shivering, she had caught a cold. She wriggled around on the seat she was on a bit, as there was something she was sitting on. The Angel realised it was something in her pocket. As she reached her hand into her pocket, she wondered, just what was in there. Her hand grasped the object. It was cold and wet. Angel #1 got it out of her pocket to reveal a valuble treasure.

"Whats this? A diamond necklace. How'de that get in there? That'de be worth a fortune!"

TORPEDO IN THE WATER TORPEDO IN THE WATER BEARING 220

AYE...MAN BATTELSTATIONS

The alarm rings as i watch a trail of bubbles seeming to head right at us

A underwater flash then a THUD.....a waterspout pops up

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT...TURN THOSE LIGHTS OVER THERE!!!

I can now see that the torpedo from the other sub has hit the japanese and completly annihaleted them...pieces of wreckage float everywhere......i look with binoculars where the light searches.....suddenly it glints off of somthing in the distance......it seems to be a periscope

Give me that signalling light

I flash a message at the scope....Please surface and identify...we have no hostile intent toward you

Well maybe we will find out who it is....

The crew on the top look for survivors and wait for a reply from the sub..
Pioneer:
Message sir, requesting us to surface.

Pioneer glares at the Radioman, who pauses before "filing" the message in the bin.

Keep us down sailor, right turn, come to heading 48, set a depth to bring us up near the pens.

As silent as the dark night, Pioneer and his dark submersable pulled away from the Diana. The headphones recorded the sounds of the liners propellors starting up, and the scuttling on board the other submarine. As the moon crested the treetops from one of the Central Isles plantations, the U3 slid gracefully past the tropical sea life, knowing that their tour of duty, was not yet done...
Pioneer:
Pioneer and the U3 glide silently beside their pier and tie off effortlessly. The skipper bounds onto the dock before the stern line is secured and heads back towards the bright lights of Sams'. The recent "encounter" will fuel speculation that the truce is over.

On the ground, a piece of paper wafts in the breeze. It grabs his attention, being slighly blue in color instead of the normal dust red. Picking it up, the wind catches hold of the paper and takes the larger piece away, torn from his hand. But the piece in his hand, brings forth hope.

"Coding is almost complete, the Northland expect's this to be operatio..."

The Northland has a code?

Moving briskly he heads for Sams, to uncover if the Northland may well be resurfacing...
Pioneer:
Pioneer looks around the room and discovers to his amazement, not all the photos were returned when Sams had the blue wallpaper installed. The stench of cheap Cologne still hangs, but the sterling silver frame is missing. There is no replacement, it looks like someone simply walked in and strod off with the photo.

The cubes inside the bacardi canter reflect across the table, to an empty seat. Once the place where he thought his future lay, clearly he was mistaken.

Here's to Mongoose, confidant, friend, buddy and ad hoc fortune teller. cool.gif

Raising the glass, I take great comfort in seeing his photo perched right above my regular booth, anchored firmly. A smile sneaks across my face as the jukebox plays a familar tune.
Pioneer:
A messenger brust through the front shutters. The fans overhead twirl slowly as Sam stands at the bar cleaning glasses out. Most of the regulars come and go but I personally have found it easier if I just stay in the bar. It has all the ammenities close by, and what else will I spend my money on. The messenger seems to know who to look for and strides over to my booth.

Message for you Sir. Assignment for you. Overseas.

The letter carried the Official Red Tide insignia, some of these limies would never have seen it. The letter's tear off rips effortlessly and the information is true. It has been a while coming however it's a new day, and shortly, a brand new world will be opened up.

But the Central Isles, will always be my home.
Pioneer:
The calender on the far wall flickers under the air flow from the overhead fans. Sam stands at his bar, as usual, cleaning glass after glass. The mahogony bar is getting a wipe down from one of the tavern girls, whom I notice is going to lengths to show off her stockings.

The calender...it taunts me. Even from this distance I can see where Sam has crossed out dates, and where dates have been circled.

One of the circled dates has been crossed out, as though it passed without so much as a secondary thought. There are those that know, and those that will never tell why.

A bacardi arrives at my booth from the waitress with the stockings. A smile and she winks at me as she speaks.

Everything will be all right.

One line, and truth becomes a real character. laugh.gif
Angel#1:
The Angel comes rushing into Sam's bar. Although she says nothing, the expression on her face is disturbing. She looks around the room and spies Pioneer. She lets out a breathe of air. She runs to Pioneer's booth, but stops half way. She looks around again, then rushes off to Sam.

Sam, thank god!!! Get me the strongest you've got, right now.

Angel #1 slammed a note on the bar table, then ran to Pioneer a second time. This time, she got the whole way.

Angel pie, whats wrong with you now?? What do you want? Or should I say, how are you going to threaten me this time?

No time to ask questions.

Angel #1's drink was served to her. As her hands shook, she grasped the cup and drank the whole drink.

He's been taken..... please help...... you must..... what will we do?

Who's been taken??? Are you drunk?

No, I am not drunk!! You must understand, he is gone, we were supposed to meet... yesterday.... but he didn't.. and then I saw it, and I tried to stop them, I really did, but there were too many of them.

Too many of what? Who has been taken!! Tell me now or I won't help!!

Too many smurfs, they have taken Mongoose.
Angel#1:
The Angel directed Pioneer to the place where she had last seen him. It seemed to be an airforce army base, although the moonlight was not reliable.

How are we supposed to get him?? This is a plane strip. Neither of us know how to fly a plane, especially these air force ones!!

Well Pioneer, you mightn't, but I know a thing or two from my German train... erm, german air force training.

Angel #1 looked around for a familar plane which she could drive. She spotted one! Although she couldn't recall the name, she was sure she could fly it.

Suddenly, one of the security guards ran over to them, pointing his gun at them. He screamed for the other men to come, and in a matter of seconds, 4 security men stood around the two of them, pointing their guns.

What do you think......

The Angel interupted him

We are from the American air force. We have been sent here to hunt down and kill the plane full of what is better known as 'smurfs'. They have kidnapped a man that is of great stature whom is the keeper of knowledge. You kill us, and the world shall be doomed.

The 4 men, and Pioneer, were all stunned over the Angel's summary.

I do remember. That plane went just this morning, as we delayed them. They told us they were heading east towards Japan and threatened us that if we spoke a word to anyone, we will be killed. This plane here is twice as fast as theirs as the 'smurfs' also had cargo which would weigh them down One of the men said.

Well, thank you. We shall leave at once.
Pioneer:
A void...a moment lost in time...and empty space that is unable to be accounted for. The head bobble had long gone, but the impact of the moment still exetered pressure on the present circumstances.

Once we were kings among the currents, the Server Truce diversified everybody. Few mariners stayed with the Central Isles now, even fewer knew less of those that moved on. But the cobblestones taken from the red cliffs and the gunmetal shade of mortar was unmistakeable, this was still the Central Isles, and this was home.

And the void, the moment in time had passed, with the turning of the flood tide. And Sams was right where it was before the tussel began, where Queens once strode, where the might of a man is measured not by the medals on his chest, but by the words of those who were not there, who did not live through it, and who revear what has been accomplished.

Irrespective of the carnage.

Bacardi thanks Sam.

Just the way I like it, no ice. Home.
Drenched:
A figure cloaked in a sea worn trench coat wanders through the doors and sits down at the piano....he gently lays his fingers on the keys....and takes a minute to think....then begins to softly play....he plays a song of remberance....a song of memories......a song of the sea....a slow pirates hymn....he finishes and turns to those sitting behind him....and lowers the collar on his coat

I have returned.....errr......again...

He speaks as a grin spreads on his face....he motions to the bartender....who knows exactly what is needed.....the waitress brings him his beer beer-toast1.gif

Thanks....tis been a long time away....my boat was struggeling back.....shes in need of a refit....the poor U-tube is old....so my friends how are the days.....and how may i lend my assistance to the reminants of the great red nation
Pioneer:
Pioneer walks out the building and stops to look at the roof. A nondescript building, not one that gets listed on the many guided walks of the Isles, just another of those buildings finished before the war started, and now houses, potentially, the future. Just an average building where it is rumoured that once upon a time, the Northland had a zepplin research project.

A blimp hanger - a future? Who would have thought.

I headed back down the street, racing some debrie in the gutter moving in the melting snow. At the corner, I stopped and looked at Sams, wondering if anyone had missed my inpromtu absence, or indeed, more importantly, if anyone knew why?
Pioneer:
The shutters squeak open once again as I sqeeze through as quietly, and unsucessfully as possible. Barren for the sound of the overhead fan, I close in on my regular perch, to my regular booth, with my regular drink. A clock on the opposite wall runs backwards, counting down the time to perhaps some undisclosed departure in the future. Sliding into my seat, the support has recently been uphosletered.

Checkmate.

The crystal of the glass rings a clear tone on the edge of the table. The tide is turning, and the sailors do not know the height. They wait to see the result, wheras in fact, they could be looking at the transformation. Off to the side, Sam wipes clear the mahogony bar top, ready for action.
Pioneer:
The images of cruelty jump before him again, as they seem to continue to stalk, reminding the sailor of what once was, has been lost not through the ravages of war, but through the inability to remain faithful. Now it seems almost like, the future had been foretold, but the viewers were not aware. And the thoughts continue without the answers as one wonders the questions, which clearly, now, will never be answered. A fresh bacardi sits in front of me, and an opened telegram from a foreign land signals one of the few reminders of a place once enjoyed. The message is brief, but enlightening.

Coming into town. Wait for me.

A smudged blue image adorns the corner of the telegram, and a smile not long seen, floods in with the tide.
Jimmy Koenig:
Sneaking into a back room with the camera at the ready, in search of a single truth behind the rumours....stalking through an unlocked door, using a planter tree for disguise, I see the images appear before my eyes.

Hmmmm, there's something very familar, and yet, unsettling about this. Where's my camera?

CLICK
Pioneer:
There was a scurry of feet across the ballroom floor, ladders suddenly started appearing everywhere as the diamond chandeliers came down, to be replaced by generic glass ones. Boarding began to be nailed up on some of the windows facing west, and staff emerged from every doorway into the foyer. Plants were moved back away from the sunlight streaming through the glass ceiling, and I wondered what all the panic was about.

I walked through the revolving doors as I had done many many times before. The cobblestone roadway looked different...the grass that had been growing around the edges were now gone. Perhaps worn down by the volume of traffic beginning to use the streets again. I approached the pier and the air was, alive. A smell I'd not detected in quite some time wafted through me, and filled me with intrepidation. In the distance, I saw the dry dock close behind an old ship chugging away from the smokestack.

And I knew then, what I had always believed. The Central Isles would shortly no longer be the idyllic paradise that it had been for the last few years.

The truce looks ready to break.

A smile crept over me, and I noticed that I walked faster and with more purpose now. And in my mind, I was already putting to sea.
Boney:
A solitary figure walked through the doors, the wind and rain coming in with him.

Its good to be back hes says

Pioneer and his bicardi loked out from his corner booth and watched the young man walk across the floor to the bar, he looks familiar he thought.

he just heard him saying, pint o shandy please Sam.

as he waited for his drink, he looked around the room, he recognised some of the people, Tootie sleeping under one of the tables, Buxton getting his wallet stolen by one of the nurses as he slept, and Pioneer looking at him from the corner both.

a slow smile spread across his face.

thanks Sam he said as he picked up his drink and started walking over to the corner both.

Hey Pio he said as he sat down, hows it goin?

he saw a grin spread across his face as he slowly remebered who this guy was.

Hey Boney! bin a long time! where you bin?

Here n there, working for Delta Force mainly.

Realy, sounds good.

Miss the sea really, though. thinking of returning to the Deep Blue.

Good, red could use some extra help.

Errm, returning as blue again.

Pioneer choked coughing up the mouthful of bucardi.

What!? blue!?

Yup, always bin blue

Well, its good to have you back any way.

Whats been goin on while i bin away? its been a long 2 years.

2 years, its a long story.

Well you can start as soon as i get back.

Boney walked over to the jukebox and slid in a quarter, he keyed in J3.

Its good to be back he said.

He just sat down as the music started and Pioneer started telling him of all that had happened over the last 2 years.
Tbar:
Another New Year ...

Tbar kicked back and reminisced.. years past .. naval conflicts, missions, times of excitement. Bored.. that's my problem.. I'm bored with "peace" .. its time he thought.. "to stir up trouble again". ... ::thinking of days of old:::

Tbar sat back in his wooden chair.. kicked his feet up upon the deck and looked around listening to every 'creak ' of the old "boat". When it came time to turn in the keys, retire, Tbar stole the boat.. he wondered if this really was a time of "peace". Moored at a secluded and remote retirement Island the 'boat' was rusty. A Converted underwater bunker of WWII, the bunker is solid cement and steel .. a Wolf Pack pen at one time. The entrance is an underwater .. a work of nature, an old and dead volcano once venting hot molten rock, now but a cavern entrance ... put to work by the original builders. the location and existence .. long forgotten and lost to any maps of the world. Isolated.. secret .. secluded.. a hermits haven.

What is it that drives a man? What is it that makes him want to live and go on.. and for what purpose? Abstract thought.. flashes of times and friends streaked thru his mind like bolts of lightening ..

Tbar got up.. put on his Cap .. and decided upon a course of action. Central Island Hotel .. I'll go hang in the bar, dock side, for a bit.. catch up on old friends, news.. dust of my 'old' table at Sams.. and a grog or two. Maybe that will cheer me up a bit, Tbar thought.

Tbar got up.. walked down the long winding stairways to the "boat" in the lagoon below .. rustly .. but "his" while singing a song in his mind where he could only remember some of the words. A feeble attempt aat singing and whistling echoed the Caveren as he progressed.. .. a song of the sea....a slow pirates hymn.... "Yo ho.. steal the mans grog ... la la la"
Pioneer:
The bacardi has always been good, the staff even better, but it has been the clients whom I have bonded most with. The maple staircase from the upstairs rooms was my usual enterance. The rooms had changed and this stairwell was outside my door. The room itself, significantly smaller, but unlike the other, this room faced the sunset over the harbour. And the staircase emptied out right beside the edge of the bar. There as always, Sam stood behind the mahogony wiping a crtystal glass he would never put out

What say ye weary traveller, doth the beddings please thee master.

I smiled as Sam butchered, yet again, another quote. It seemed strange but I now knew wny he never got them right. He didn't have to - it was a hobby to him, not a master.

Sam, the best way to become acquanited with a subject, is to write a book about it.

For the first time in I don't know how long, he looked at me and stopped cleaning. He knew from whence I had travalled, at what had been lost, and perhaps more so, what I left behind. It was no wonder that he should gaze at me with eyes of questionable emontion in looking forward to what the sun brought forth. I moved into my booth. The juke box was still the same, the photos were still hung up, even the names etched into the tabletops were the same, albeit, some have caved in with the shallowness they were inscribed with.

But the heroes, and the future, were carved deep.

And the first 100, were the genesis.
Argon:
Argon sits on the dock and stares out into the Sea contemplating his life...

I know that I have lived longer than any Sea Dog had the right to. I have battled through two generations of Ocean Warriors in the Great Conflict over the Central Isles. I had the honor of leading the Northland to Victory in the First Great War as her first Admiral only to later end up with that Band of Rouge Pirates we called the Assassins Alliance. (ahh? The Assassins, those were the Glory days). I have survived endless battles, some great and some only remembered by a handful of crewmembers and the souls of my worthy adversaries. I have stared into Deaths deep blue eyes, never giving in to her alluring gaze. Oh the tales I could tell... but who would listen... who would believe...

So when did it happen?

Am I a beaten man?

Has fate had the last laugh?

How did I end up dry-docked, drunk and useless? Could it be that peace prevailed where war had failed? Have I finally fought my last battle with the ghosts of my past? Let death be swift for dry-rot is no way for a Sailor to die!
Wulfgar:
Man, you guys are starting to wax poetic. Some nice thoughts here, wistful, melancholy, profound...just goes to show you what happens when you stare into a fire too long, or wake up in a lounge chair, by the ocean, caught up in ocean reveries....half bottle of Bicardi laying in the sand.

It wasn't bad enuf I had to listen to Pioneer croon Bryan Adams from the bridge about some wench, some ingrate, that did him wrong. (fact is, Pioneer was trying to LULL me ehhehhe)

Thats why THERE WILL BE NO SHORE LEAVE until Deep Blue begins.

What is this, the Dead Poets Society? Operative word here is Dead.

Fact it, you basteeds are ALL going to die, hopefully by my hand, whining some c### about the good ole days. heheheh. Forget the good ole days, when you are taking a dirt nap you can remember what you did.

Buck up and load those depth charges. Get the torps greased. You have no purpose in life other than to become fish fodder, and you WILL become fish fodder if I have anything to say about it.

Not to mention you are all drunks.

I love you guys, but you are going DOWN>>>>

Let the games begin. smile.gif))))
Pioneer:
Bacardi always tastes good, somehow certain days of the year seemed to increase the consumption level. Sam always knew - I'd lived in his foyer well beyond the war, so the days which seemed to flow into one another, abruptly stemmed and became disjointed, confused, technicolor, all before any consumption.

I dare to ask thee Pioneer but did you...

I waved him off before he could finish the sentence that always seems to come up when I speak to people who haven't seen me in a while. Sam, however, had never asked me, and I couldn't count the number of years anymore I'd gone without the answers.

I understand.

Not a day goes past I don't think about what was, and where it should have gone. And the bacardi...considerate Sam made it a triple

To lost friends Sam.

I raised my glass and he knew why.
Pioneer:
Across the harbour, white caps get swept up by the unseasonal cold wind, a long way from either of the polar circles. The wooden sign on the iron hinges outside the back door of Sam's sways, leaves are blown in swirls uphill on the cobblestone streets, and a shutter in the distance bangs mercilessly against one of the dockside wharehouses. The tables and chairs have all been removed the wooden planked patio, leaving a desolate floor which on a Saturday night, sometimes flexes as happy couples twirl about to local musicians.

The wind gusts, slicing an invisable sliver off the top of the harbour, and cooling the currents on which is was carried. They lift up, crash hard against him and momentarily defy gravity, before beading down the black trench coat to the bottom lip, where it pauses, and then, drops. The splash droplets explode on his boots.

The rear door opens and the the bright lights of the Tavern silhoettes the rounded figure. His shadow shows him drying another glass, before holding it up to the light to inspect for clarity. He pulls the glass back into his shadow and halts his cleaning to speak.

It is cold.

I can't for the life of me think of the Russion translation which someone told me many years ago. He is right though, Sam has always been right.

Aye, it is cold.....and time.

Inside the pockets my left hand holds the notebook - of all the writtings of a bygone era, of all the thoughts expressed, and of all the lies that may have been. The cold winds riding in from the northern waters carve up the serenity of the bay. Eventually they will fade, but not before smashing at least one ship against the stone quay. Once, the ship found splintered in the harbour was mine. Now, most of the locall "boys" have learned.

The winds will blow, the harbour will be stormy, and boats will be knocked about. We have all lost a boat, perhaps not in this harbour but in some foreign port. And, the lucky ones, have all sailed again.
Pioneer:
From the counter, a sleek shine reflects the soft overhead light. The room, a little dark for this time of year, smells of a fresh cigar.

I bring the glass down a little too hard. The base explodes, and shatters across the tabletop - ice only. No sence wasting good bacardi. Sam looks at me as if he expected it.

Ich lie? Sie nie.

He hates it when I speak that. He also knows why. Only hours before I had been walking along the quayside, collar turned up - but still spray seeped between and trickled one droplet at a time down my spine. The weather had turned southerwesterly, the chop was confused, and angry. The reflection from the light irritated my eye, and I reach up, attempting to gouge the splinter out with my ring finger, unsucessfully.

I once knew...

I've heard the story. Most barmen like Sam have a story, rarely do we hear it, and the reason is, no one is interested.

I once knew too Sam, but apparently, running off cowardly is now a llegitimised action.

I would rather die in the face of adversity, then give up because it was "too hard".

Let the crooning go forth, and signal as a lighthouse, safe passage forward for those whom cast off in the storm.

Sam has replaced my glass without me even knowing it.

Saturday Night At Sams

Argon:
Having nowhere else to go Argon stares into the gathering swells.

Argon Thinks; There was a time when only an Assassin ship would sail in such a Gail but alas; no ships sail into the passion of the Sea?s in these days of middling sailors who have never felt the weight of war or the cost of victory. The Sea? She is not a thoroughfare she is a vivacious mistress that requires a significant bounty. I have paid my debt to her many times over but she still calls for more. My pains and my pleasures are so entangled that I feed them jointly in the same stroke. Stay shore bound? I cannot?I will not!!! I will sail again?

The salt air brings on quite a thirst. I think I?ll head for Sam?s and see if Ole Pioneer will spring for Ale.
Pioneer:
The front windows of Sams are all four quarter glass panels. Some years ago he painted decorations onto the panels, and never quite cleaned off the corners where white marks still remain. Even since the Server Truce, white paint has remained in the corners.

The Server Truce. How it hurts to remember what it was like before. The Northland and the Westland battling for the same bit of real estate. Something that I never knew back then was that integrity in war was character building. I can recall pulling Buxton wet and cold out of the sea after sinking his ship. As a POW Buxton would appreciate being dropped off at the shore battery, knowing that eventually the Northland would rescue him.

And I remember others who would just disappear, who would vanish laughing into the night, the smell of cheap cologne between their legs as they behaved in the professional manner of a hooker.

The bacardi is good Sam.

This came for you today.

He tosses an envelope on the table with a distingushed coat of arms in the corner. He knows, turns and leaves. I look at the envelope, and a wry little smile begins to trickle across my face. It hurts at first - it has been a long while between joyous acclaim, but this one letter makes it all the while.

On the street, the Postman walks by, and casts a quick glance through the dirty windows. He smiles, for he knows the view from the outside, and he knows the joy inside.

I open the enveleope and pull out a green invitational card, addressed to Mr. Pioneer.

No one else, just Mr. Pioneer.

I win.

The smile gets a little bigger and the bacardi taste mighty fine.
