Finding Range

Can ant 1 offer me any tips on finding correct range/distance.I look through the pscope the ship looks close i fire the ships long gone..

Don't forget to check your zoom level on your scope. I would suggest firing at a zoom of 1x or 2x.
I use the BTAC (big tactical display, click on the top right button in the small radar window, bottom right) you can then use the concentric circles to estimate range based on the scale (set at 500m, 1K, etc)

When you click on a target the BTAC displays heading and speed infomation on the LHS.  Every time you click the target that info is updated which can help you estimate where your target is going.

I find unless it's a slow moving target that can't change direction quickly it's best to shoot between 300 and 700m leaving them little room for manoevre - particularly in the LFN subs and you fire a spread of six 

At much more that 1.5K it's more pot luck....

The exact range is hard to figure, its more like "what-you-estimates".
It takes a little time and practice, but its not hard to learn.

A trick is to use zoom x2, when you have sunk an enemy, pay attention to the shipsize in your scope/binocs, then look at your HUD and see what the distance is/was, do it like that till you got the hang of it

I usually sinks enemies within 100/200 meters so they dont have time to evade. (T&M&O ships can be sunk at any range)

mmm radar works pretty well for guessing range..

Here is a little trick works for me..try to line up convoys from the side. this way if a fish is ahead or behind the intended target by a little but it often hits one of his consorts. (also a broad side shot is nice, target is bigger) I have managed hits at up to almost 3000m this way. I usualy fire 1 fish at a time in groups of 3. (1 a bit too soon, 1 just right and 1 a bit too late) then I WATCH them zooming in if needed to keep track. If you use the "radar" to find the range, use the same zoom setting for each shot and fire single torps in a short while your accuracy will probably improve. BUT you need to SEE how much you missed by. Big spreads work but waste a lot of fish, in real life this is not good as it means turning around to resupply far sooner than needed. In WW2 for german uboats opporating close to North America every fish was meant to hit, a risky shot would often be passed up.

Yes, torpedoes have a range. We have modelled them on real life torpedoes with a slight increase in the speed of the slowest torpedoes to help with the balance. In the future you will be able to choose between distance and speed, currently all torpedoes are set for their highest speed/shortest range. Range currently tops out around 3500m.

Here's a funky little way of getting range. Highlight the target you wish to know range on and say 'engage' to your computer. The bloke then says 'engagingx target heading y range Z meters. So you know your range

Whihc gave me an idea. If i could say 'range' or something and the computer give me a load of details about my target that would be cool. Just a suggestion that I was too lazy to put into the future suggestions part

Just a quick thought. Wouldn't it be easier for us the players if when we look through our periscopes it tells us what the range is once we have focused on a target. It currently shows what vessel it is, i.e. M24 ( Merchant 24 ) Couldn't you include a range display as well?

in my best sean connery voice:

"verify distance to target, one ping only please".

it seems to be that even in ww2, the periscope was more detailed as far as what into the skip sees, as well as how the info is transfered to the crew.

distance to target command would be nice, or on a grander scale, the ability to record custom voice commands that would output info we need. and it sure would be nice to have someones voice repeat back my commands to me as they are carried out, but by this point im starting to post into the wrong forum.

For the IGN there is a soundfile confirming commands in one of the other threads. Haven't installed it yet (just picked it up last night), but it's supposed to be quite an addition .
