Klm - Surface Mission #10b

Holy freholy? Me versus the entire US fleet?

I actually adopted a different strategy to those listed above. Took me a little while to work out and was closing in on victory when I fell to friendly fire the first time.

My approach:

Flank straight away, bring up the BigTac and auto guns and anti aircraft. Flick the torpedos to starboard. Radar zone 8km and pause...find the opposition DD's. Set the speed of torps to max, giving you about 7000feet range. I had some of my own fleet to leeward but alas they were behind, which meant every man and his dog was gunning for me. I found that I was most successful when there was one DD in front of the others, that gave me time to scamper a bit. Nothing worst then getting blown to bits with no speed to manauver.

Detail everything to south to attack the DD, everything in the north west to attack the other flanking DD. That leaves either four or five in the middle unaccounted for. Patience.

Unpause, give it everything you've got, four fish and head west. (Reasoning to come.) When the first DD sinks, redetail the southern contigency on one of the inner DD's. Redetail 5 inch guns to same ship, detail four inch guns to the nearest PTG. Keep the 4 inch guns on alternate PTG's, they move like flies.

When the second lot of torpedoes come on line, turn, still at flank NW, and look at the nice alley made for you. I couldn't see my opponents as the southern fleet were now between them and I but I aimed in the general direction. I dropped one DD and one PTG over the horizon. :)

I had the southern fleet move in from the eastern horizon dropping the DD's. When my Uboats finally got into the north, I had both groups join and had about 8 concentrated on each DD. As each dropped, I redtailed the 5 inch guns and the attacking fleet. At the end, I was left with 4, their DD's were gone and the PTG's were to be moped up. As each of the PTG's moved in on me, I had the AA 40 and 20mm guns lend assistance. I left none in reserve to protect the KW3.

Eventually, the Kw3, couple of u boats, one of my DD's were left to mop up the 3 submarines. I hit the yellow sub on the first pass and picked up one of the others as well before calling it a day.

Opinion: the drop helped me the most. If I could get one or two of my surface boats in front of me to take the pummelling, I was prepared to sacrafice them for the good of the fleet.

This mission subsequently meant I have completed all 6 campaigns. This was perhaps the second hardest cognitive mission, the USA surface one (protect the convoy?) perhaps beating it by a whisker. The LFN sixty second drill with the subs required the most tactics.

I've decided that if your mission starts off with your destroyer in the lead of the other two, you might as well hit the escape button cause there aint no way in hell you're going to survive this mission. I was dead within 2 minutes each time it started out this way. My last mission I lasted almost eight minutes cause I had some cover and was able to run as fast as possible towards Kaiser.

I'd really like to see a clip of someone completing this one.

iT IS POSSIBLE .

I just tried this one again.

It can take a few starts , when you only last some seconds .

If you can just make distance towards south west out of range and survive , the kaizer Willem will eventually destroy most enemy ( unless it sinks , which happens sometimes ! ).

As you head SW , note angles of incomng torpedoes and adjust heading , mostly parallel , but a few will come from the NW group of enemy subs too .

Watch out for those subs , and order a couple of ships to attack them .

All this time , of course , you will have been noting the progress of the yellow sub , which will be heading S most likely .

Now , apparently it is not possible to fire a full set of depth charges in this campaign , so you have to make a few runs over it to hit .

As you get close , it will launch , so , early in the game , get as fast as possible away to preserve your hull , you may need that at this stage , it is likely it will score a hit on you .

Richthoven will be pleased you destroyed the spies , by the way .

Ok, been out of commission for a while but I'm back at it. I've completed all the Imperial Sub campaigns but am still stuck on this turkey. I don't see anywhere where it tells you to take care of the yellow sub. Was this order given in an earlier mission? I've only gotten close enough to drop depth charges once. The longest I've lasted is about 15 minutes once. I usually sink between 1 and 7 ships. I head for the hills to the west while sending everyone else after DD's. I've never had a message stating that the Kaiser is releasing the life boats.

I've run a total of 100 Imperial surface missions so I know I've tried this one a bunch all with the same results. Eating sand >;(

Starting to feel like Swiss cheese!

Still no luck. When assigning a DE's to destroy the yellow sub, they don't seem to do anything. I send all DD's to attack enemy DD's and all my subs to do likewise. If I have a couple DD's in front of me I can last a little while until I'm the main target.

When I start up I go straight to flank speed hard to port then battle stations then tubes starboard. I immediately order all my ships to attack DD's usually though I have sent a few after the subs at times as well. Then I take a heading towards the yellow sub trying to stay behind anybody there is to stay behind. I shoot my tubes whenever I get a chance and if my own ships aren't in the way. End result is it's only a matter of time. I do continue to monitor the status of each of my ships to make sure there is always a target they are going after. Image
