Well, fellow RN's in exile... I am trying to get started on a mission, and I can't seem to do a darned thing except sit endlessly in the ocean or sink myself.
I am playing RN surface.
Several times I have run out of depth charges and I can't figure out what the value of hedgehogs are yet...
Last time, I figgered since the German sub had just torped me, I'd try to roll a rack of charges at a 10 meter depth... and I blew my own keel out.
I am starting to get frustrated.
Not sure what to do.
Suggestions?

Rob,
You got the Enigma gold pacthes loaded up or are you still playing "out of the box."
The patch listings to bring the game up to specs allow greater freedom (IMO) for the surface ships. I went from not hitting a thing to somewhat proficient after upgrading my game to Gold.

The patches also give you more depth charges and other ammo.
Okay, I think I just managed to screw things up! I didn't intend to report any post! Humble apologies!!!!

At any rate - third time's a charm -
I am playing E:RT Gold Edition straight out of the box in the USA (just bought it on Thursday).
I managed to finish the first mission... forced the German sub to surface by sitting over him dead quiet for about 15 minutes. He stuck his periscope up and I hopped into the deck gun and started to fire. Evidently, he was right near the surface, because my second shot hit the conning tower as it broke the surface and down he went.
I am not on the fifth mission, and am consistently getting my tail kicked. I can usually get one of the oiler/tanker ships sunk before I get hacked to bits by the AA fire.

Unless you already have things figured out, here are some tips related to your first post:
-Try moving the DC meter all the way around clockwise and firing single pairs at different depths w/ 20-30m increments.
-Most submarines cannot go lower than 215m, an RNE sub can go to 250, but since you're RNE you don't have to worry about that.
-Don't drop charges higher than 20-ish meters unless you're absolutely sure the sub is at that depth and you're at flank so you can get out of the way before they rip a hole in your hull.
-Hedgehogs are basically a sinking spread shot... like taking a huge shotgun and aiming it straight down into the water. They have a range of about 300m. (300m=inbetween seond and third line in 500m radar zoom). Being a submariner, hedgehogs are very annoying if the surface ship uses them right.
-AI subs usually duck down when you're a decent distance, so they'll prolly be below 50m if you're headed straight for them. Don't bother w/ DC's above 20m... if they're @ 10m, you're hull will prolly rip off their hull, and, well... they're usually a bit more cautious than that. Although sometimes they aren't ;o)
I believe those where alla ur q's. Need anymore help just ask.

Hey all, I came to these forums seeking help, and I thought I'd come here rather than starting a new thread. I searched for the terms Depth and Charge and found this thread which is probably most helpful, but I cant even get past the first LFN Surface because of that sub. I've tried your technique of single pairs at 10-20m intervels. I've also took advice from a couple of other posts, but I simply can't hit it.
I dread to think of what it'll be like if/when MP comes out, and the sub commanders can think for them selves. Especially is there isn't some sort of indicator showing estimated depth
Anyway, can anybody give me a few more pointers? I know alot of patience has been spilled on this issue, but I simply can't see how its possible. I've sunk 1 sub before with charges, but thats only because he submerged within a very short distance of me, so i needed only drop a few charges about 20m

I'm glad to help... if my i-net is working...
20-30m intervals, not 10-20... depth charges havbig booms, and although you may not do much damage from 10m away, you'll do enough to deplete his hull's integrity to make his hull breach depth a little more shallow... which is good... unless you're a sub cap (jabs his thumb at his chest...)
Computers are rather stupid. They'll drop to 50m (torp depth) when you start getting close, then start drinking and sink to 200. Open up your big tac and click on the sub... if he's moving, awesome. Drop some kegs about 150m infront of him @ 50-80-110-140-170-200. Single pairs, remember. If he isn't moving, get ready to waste some charges:
Depending on how many charges you have...
50-140-200 about 75m in front of him, on him, and about 75m behind him. Remember to drop a tad farther (but not very far since it takes a while to accelerate underwater) away on his far side because they'll take longer to get to boom depth. If he starts moving, that means you had a good drop and you'll prolly kill or wound him. If he doesn't move, try shallower or deeper depths.
If he does move, go out far enough so you can turn around and be facing him about 400m from him... but don't stop, if he shoots torps and you're stopped... well, you learn one way or another. If he's coming towards you drop really soon, if he's backing away from you really late. Try and keep his heading or his heading minus 180. If you see his periscope, drop increments starting from 20-ish. They'll hit him if he's at 10m if your hull doesn't rip him first.
My fingers are getting tired. Try that, and if it doesn't work, keep track of everything you do and everything he does and post it, I'll see if I can help.
