Some Command Questions

I was wondering why some commands are really spotty about working... for example...

ENGAGE - I am doing my convoy escort mission with the DD and 6 DE's in the LFN surface campaign, and I noticed the ENGAGE command working only after I had manually fired the guns the first time. This seems odd to me. Is there a limited range to using the engage command? Surely my firing range is as good as the German DE's... I get voice confirmation, "Engaging enemy, hai!" but no firing.

TAKE EVASIVE - Seems to be useless with my DD. I get voice acknowledgement, but the rudder never moves.

DEFEND, DECK GUN - Am I correct in thinking it will fire at the nearest ship, friendly or enemy, to my position?

Only the enemy. However, if a friendly happens to be in the way, it may take on hits from your boat by mistake.

Engage is used with another word (engage deckguns|aa-guns|target)

Defend deck|aa-guns fires at the nearest enemy ship|plane

Take Evasive should work for all ships, but it only kicks in when you are in the line of a torpedo.

You need to first click on which target to engage .
