    Introduction

As was stated in the Squadron stand-up document, 85 exists to maximise its members enjoyment of the game by working as a team to create an effective squadron for Red Team to use in the defeat of the evil Blue team.

Also as stated in the Stand-up document, the Squadron ethos can be summed up in four words:

    Fun, Teamwork, Fairness, Professionalism

For a reminder of what is meant by each please refer to the copy of that document which was sent to you, and to which you implicitly agreed, or look in the open section of the squadron forum under the “What 85 is about” thread.

In order to give practical effect to both the Squadron purpose and its ethos there has to be a common standard of operating that will be employed by each and every 85 pilot. These common standards are expressed as a limited set of rules to which every pilot has already agreed (if only by not objecting to them when they were proposed) and with which they are expected to comply every time they fly in SoW. Those rules are the Squadron Standing Orders set out below.

    Standing Orders

1: Get You and Your Plane Safe Home to our Home Base

Your prime duty, whilst doing your best comply with mission objectives and instructions from TopHat (Ground Control), is to come home and land safely with your aeroplane.

NB: Obviously the real world, in the shape of wife, children, cats, work and stuff, will sometimes get in the way – guidance on what is expected of you in such circumstances when a controlled landing at home base is not possible will be issued shortly.

2: Don’t Fly Solo on a Campaign Server

Want to go on TWC? Then at least take/be a wingman. If there is nobody from 85 available then see if you can team up with another Pilot, if possible

    3: Monitor Teamspeak

Whenever you are flying, even if only practicing on another server, monitor the Squadron’s TeamSpeak Channel.

4: Thou Shalt Not Go Off Free-Lancing

Remember 85 is part of a bigger team; as we expect other members of 85 to be there for us, so does the larger team expect 85 to be doing its job. 85’s job is to protect the UK, especially our bit in the South West Corner of the map, from German bombers and recon aircraft. (When flying in Clod)

We do not tangle with enemy fighters unless we have no choice and we do not decide, “Oh, it’s very quiet let’s go over to France to see if we can find a fight”. If you feel like that sort of free-form, purposeless punch up, and who doesn’t from time to time, then do it on another server because it is the antithesis of everything 85 is about.

5: Turn Up for Squadron Play Time

Whilst 85 pilots are encouraged to fly (in pairs) on the Clod server as often as they want or can, we still need to regularly fly as a whole Squadron. After consultation it was decided that we should have a Squadron Play time (other squadron’s call them “Mission nights”, “Play time” fits more with 85’s ethos) on Monday evenings and the core time would be between 19:30 and 20:00 UK local time. Some members can be expected to be on from about 18:00 until 22:00 or even later, but everyone should be on ready to fly a mission (this is not training) by 19:30 and be able to stay until at least 21:30.

If a pilot cannot be there then they shall either make an entry in the Leave Book on the forum or, if that is not possible, send an email or SMS text message to either the Adjutant or the CO.

    6. Kill the Buggers

An enemy aeroplane that gets home is going to come at us again. On the rare occasion you are flying over France, forcing an aeroplane down just means that it can be repaired and take to the skies against us once more. We need to kill them, in the air on the ground, going into land, wherever we find them.

I am obliged to BOO for the following advice about damaging enemy aeroplanes (he is talking about the trails coming out of a damaged enemy):

“If it’s white it’s still gonna fight,

If it’s Black it’s coming back”

No gentlemanly conduct, please. Kill the buggers! We want to see them go down in flames. If you can, without compromising your mission or your safety, shoot up any enemy aircraft that is on the ground; crash-landed or otherwise. If they on our side of the Channel we want to kill the pilot (pyswar ops, as our American cousins would say), if on their side we want the plane as well as the pilot destroyed.

    Conclusion

Gents, there are just six rules. All are intended to promote our effectiveness as a team and hence your enjoyment of the game. Play by them.
