Tides of War

I have encountered a strange bug. Perhaps it's been talked over previously, but I can't find any threads that would match my problem.

Standard patrol with RNE MTB [myself vs. three merchants and one aircraft]:

I fire my torps and hit for example 2 out of 3 ships. I'm out of torpedoes, so I get closer and start shooting my AA guns at my target. Everything seems to be fine: I can see some damage on the target: explosion, smoke...

Suddenly, something happens: smoke disappears and my target becomes invulnerable. It seems that my fire can no longer damage the ship. I've tried everything I had on my boat - no effect.

What's important - I was able to recreate this twice, so it's some kind of persisting error. Any ideas, anyone? omg:

Or failing that start hurling insults at the crew and scare em to death!

Or failing that make them think they are seeing things and that you are really a battleship and hope they just give themselves up!

Even though my MTB is - to quote Will Riker - a "tough little ship", I'd still like to make it home for Five O'clock It's Royal Navy after all..

i had a similar experience on the MTB training missin in the patrols. thought id take the blighter down with the AA guns. Probably just that there is only so much damage that the AA guns can do.

There are four torpedoes and three merchants are there not ?

I did once sink a merchant using all the ammo almost of a torpedo boat , and jammed up against its bow , so that it could not fire at me .

To do this , I had to approach directly ahead of it , and reverse speed just before a frontal collision ! Then slow and stop again . I succeeded just in time , as it was pushing me slowly to the side , and likely into line of its gun .

I tried this a few times , to replicate it, but never succeeded again.

Funny story along the same lines... (don't mean to hijack the thread, but I can't help myself.)

Fletcher-class USS O'Bannon (DD-450) was returning to base after shelling the Solomon Islands during WWII and nearly runs right over a Japanese submarine running on the surface. For a moment, both crews are so surprised that they can't quite figure out what to do. Finally, the Japanese crew runs to man their guns and prepare to fire on the destroyer. They're so close that no weapons on the DD can depress far enough to do any damage to the sub.

So what did the crew of the O'Bannon do?

They had just taken on supplies, including several crates of potatos that had been stored close to the weather decks. The crew grabbed the potatos and began hurling them at the Japanese submarine. The Japanese crew, apparently thinking that the spuds were actually grenades, began flailing about doing anything they could to get the potatos off of the sub, even throwing some back at the Americans. Eventually, the Japanese submarine pulled far enough away for the O'Bannon to open fire with her 5' weaponry and score a hit on the sub's conning tower. The boat submerged even with the conning tower damage and the O'Bannon prosecuted with a depth charge attack.

Later examination of Japanese records show that the submarine was in fact sunk.

Today, in the quarterdeck of USS O'Bannon (DD-987) there hangs a plaque of appreciation from the Potato Growers of Maine, commemorating the only occasion when potatos ever sank a submarine.

Funny bit of trivia there...
