Tides of War

I just got the game, and am trying to get through level 1. When I chase the subs, after a while the red icons disappear from the Tac display, but I still get the radio notifying me that there's a sub in the quadrant.

How am I supposed to find the subs?

Have you set your range on 500yards? Try setting it to a higher value I always go straight to the Big TAC window and set it to 4nm and leave the mini map (bottom right) at 500yards, that way I have an over view and I use the small TAC when dropping DCs.

Other thing is I have had the disapear, however if I go to full or flank and search a bit ADSIC picks them up for me again

actually the 'blip' will vanish if youre going too fast, set your throttle to 1/3 or 2/3 speeds and the 'blips' will come up again

Thanks to both, I'll try it again.

In some cases, as in this mission, lowering speed did not bring up a target blip on the BTAC. you keep getting "Sub detected to the " messages but no blip shows up. If you ask me, the game is contradictory. If a sub is detected, shouldn't it be marked on the TAC? sleepy:

Anyway, what I've found was that it appears that the sub is sitting dead silent down below when this happens. I slow down to 1/3 and head in the direction mentioned in the last message. The moment the next direction message shows up, I head in that direction. Then I do the same for a third such message.

At this point or after just a short amount of ship movement, you're usually right above the sub. The "detected" message at this point seems to be triggered the moment you've passed right over the sub. Drop charges. enigma!:

About the detection message and TAC blip - it doesn't have to appear on the display right away. SUB/ASUW, even today, is often based on dircetions, echoes and sonar operator's best guess. This way you may know the direction, but have not nearly enough data to locate your contact om X,Y plane. That way using triangulation to refine your search sounds reasonable to me.

The TAC in ERT is not really a radar screen. It's just an illustrative way of showing your crew's last assessment of a ship's position relative to yours.

As the manual states: "The dots on your tactical display represent the last known positions of other vessels and aircraft."

So, I find it contradictory that you can receive a "SUB DETECTED" message but nothing indicated on the TAC as to where the sub was detected.

The "sub detected" message was there to minimize frustration. We have debated taking it out, but it seems to make a difference.
