Surface Vs Surface

#1
Ok, I made captain. I got me a destroyer. Can anyone tell me how to sink other destroyers with it. I been trading shots with two other destroyers for a day and a half now and all to no avail. They are too far away for torpedoes to do anything but get a completely lucky hit. Its two destroyers vs one here and I am little more than a spectator to an unfair shooting match. Setting evasive does nothing in this circumstance.
I also find it annoying that I cant look behind me when standing on the bridge cos most of my view is obscured by a tower. Strangely tho I can see almost right around me thro the binoculars which are useless in heavy seas cos they are uncontrollable and almost impossible to compensate.

This is a request for advice not a complaint,

I think it really depends on what faction your playing. Are you doing mission 7 of LFN? Almost sounds like it.
That is exactly the mission I'm on. Any help would be nice mate. What difference does it make what faction I am by the way?

I've found that the LFN tends to have a bit faster ships, but have a hull made out of cardboard reinforced eggshells. The Germans have stronger hulls than the LFN, so going head to head in a shoot-out is not the way to go. The US ships have an even mixture of firepower, speed, and hull strength. I think these are the differences between them, but I could be mistaken.
I?d also like to say that this mission took me a lot of time to get through as well, but there was one strategy that seemed to work the best.

First off, the Germans will go after the American sub. Let them do it. Subs are always a pain to avoid when trying to take out surface ships.

Next, get in close enough to use your torpedoes. You have eight and they only have four. Hitting anything with a full spread will take it out quickly. To get in close, use your destroyer?s speed and aim right for them. Makes you a smaller target, and in some cases reduces the number of guns trained on you. Cut hard when you are in range and fire the torpedoes.

Give this a try and see if it helps out at all. The basic idea for this mission is to get rid of one of them before their guns chew you up, because I think they can target you with up to eight guns with both ships.
Ive been letting jerry take out the sub anyway. On one occasion the sub sank one of the destroyers when I was on my last legs. I sank the other and then got torped by the sub..which was annoying. Im gonna give your tactics a go. Even if I die it sounds like good fun to me,
Thanks for the tips,

Archer
That did the job Kerplunk. Although sliding sideways into the enemy destroyer wasnt actually in my game plan it did do the job  :P  . Thanks again for the tip.

Hmmm...thats one I didn't think of...gotta write that down
I was side by side with it and jammed together. Already hit it with 3 torps at point blank..I guess they almost fell on the deck. I could have stuck a cutlass in my teeth and swung across and captured it if it wasnt for the other ship coming in, ,

I kept my distance for this one but focussed my fire on just one of the opposing ships.  As soon as that was sunk i focussed on the second.
that seemed to work for me but there was lots of luck as well.
