Efforts To Raise Graf Spee Begin

"Divers are expected to begin efforts this week to raise the German World War II battleship Graf Spee from the mouth of the River Plate in Uruguay." more...
At least the salvage team shall preserve it, unlike one group in the seventies who proposed to salvage the RMS Titanic in order to melt it down to make commemorative spoons.

wave: thanks for that Buxton I have visited the site and that of the Bismark and many sub info sites available on the web good on ya! at lot of the younger guys can probably get a better idea of the stress of real life warfare beneath the waves by reading the logs of some of these brave captains from the Axis.A lot of them were honerable men of compassion, especially when we look back at the situation and stress that they operated in.In a diifferent environment they may have been heroes to us all.My grandfather on my wifes side was a famous dirt track bike rider in the 1930's he broke every bone in his body. His name is Max Grosskreautz and he was born in Australia of German parents in the North Queensland sugar cane town of Proserpine. He decided at an early age that he was not cut out to be a cane farmer.

He won several BSA Stars for dirt track racing and a couple of world titles. When he competed in Germany in 1938 he met Hitler after they beat the Germans and Hitler asked him to to return to the fatherland to compete as a German. When he refused he was told that he could never return to Germany.

He found an old trail bike in my sons garage one day(he was 79 years old then)and asked why we were not using it."it wont go grandad was the reply from my son( 31 and married)OK was the reply from grandad. That afternon we received numerous complaints of this idiot doing mono's up my sons street.grandad got it going.

Hope you all enjoyed my little story.
