Damage mapping.

In SH2 you had a damage report schemetic of your sub. And you could prioritize which repairs to be fixed first etc. And depending on what was damaged, it would take a while. I think, it would make it more interesting to have to rethink tatics when certain stations are out of action or the periscope is jammed etc although in multiplayer you wouldnt want to be waiting 20 mins to have something fixed. And it wouldnt be realistic to have a major repair fixed in minutes either. So balance would need to be the key.

You could have another screen or room inside ship full of bars like you do for fuel, hull, flooding; or perhaps gauges etc listing damageable parts and equipment. And depending on how weak it is some components will be damaged quickly underfire if hit. It would be great to have some various crewmen voices yelling `Radio is out` or `breach in stern, taking on water`. Etc.

Some damageable components could be turrets, radio mast (preventing the ship to send or recieve messages to other players for a time), sonar out of action, engines, periscope jammed, batteries damaged, etc

Perhaps somethings might be best left out- such as your rudder being blown off, you would be crippled bird and open shooting season target.

Of course, over all balancing the gameplay is the most important thing here.

Some might say, the game is hard enough without such extra factors. But I think, it can go both ways- if you are badly damaged and have a DD on your tail- it might not be 100% battle worthly and have some problems of its own, evening up the chances of escape or sinking it, maybe.

Over all, I think it would add to intensity- and going into a game knowing that things will go wrong, and if u manage to cope and survive its more rewarding.

It would be a realistic taste of what it would really be like. And I think having various crewmen giving feed back- in either calm but serious tone or yelling such and such is damaged. Would save you having to examine the damage report in detail while in the heat of combat. Plus give you more of immersion that you are in command of a sub or ship with a crew, rather than the feeling of being a one man crew. (Perhaps have recordings of various voices from the countries the fraction is based upon. More preferable than fake accents that you hear in games too often. I'm sure this multi-national communitity would have some volunteers for voicing- there could be a script list pinned up and further details whereby people can send in their "audition")

The balance and question is how long the repairs would take?

And perhaps the repairs are only 85% until u dock with a supply ship or make it

back to port. Also maybe, if you 85% repair something, and it gets damaged again perhaps it now can only be 65% repaired?? and perhaps the longest repair time of being 10 mins or something?

I don't know if this would work at all, but i think it would add to a immersive and intense gaming. (one can dream cant they? :P ) Where tatics will change and more team work needed.

Or will this idea, just take the fun out of the game and slow it down??

Not to mention the game engine would need to be overhauled. So i guess it might be un-doable at this stage.

What do you think?

Some good comments i think :) after all theres nothing worse than sailing around in a DD that has next to no hull thatsucks:
