Here are some general tatics, I wrote this a long time ago so this was when the Gigex version was popular.........most of it still applies. I'll expound on it later.

Cheers!

Submarine Warfare in Enigma

What is a Submarine?

Lets just get the record straight to start off, a TRUE submarine is a warship designed to operate underwater for an almost indefinate period of time. But, to sum it up.....it is a boat that is designed to operate underwater and give the enemy hell. In Enigma, a submarine is a controlable ship that can go underwater, fire torpedoes and dive deep. Unfortunatly, you can not stay underwater forever (sorry you lamers who like to put the realism on 0% in other subsims......you are just gonna have to die like the rest of us, so get use to it!) you have to watch how much air and batteries you have left. Also, you have to keep a close eye on your hull integrity. The more you get hit, the more shallow you have to operate in order to stay alive.

So, now you are thinking, "Wow, a ship that can operate underwater. I will be unstoppable on this game!".

WRONG! True, a submarine is a very stealthy hunter, but just remember; the hunter easily becomes.....the hunted. So, don't get a big head when you sink a tanker, because you know that the Corvette, Destroyer, or Destroyer Escort is close by, and knows you are there.

Run Down Of Surface Ships

Ah, the big surface ships, lovely and graceful.....untill they cut sharp 90 degrees and toss out about 15 depth charges all over your ass! The true Submariners are terrfied of what is known as "Escorts". No, I don't mean the type that give you a good time, far from it actually. They can make your life as a submarine captain a living hell. If you see these boys, better get the first shot and hope it hits...... or you are in for a little "Depth Charge" symphony.

CORVETTE:

These are the little bee's of the surface groups. Well......better compare them to a bulldog actually. Please don't be fooled by this fat, ugly beast. Believe me, he is a pure bread bulldog.......that has RABIES!! And once you get bitten......you can kiss it goodbye. Some of his armament include....the dreaded Hedgehogs, which by far are the scarest things of all. If you see this little guy....be afraid......or kick him in the face.

Chance of Survival : 90%

DESTROYER ESCORT:

Now this guy is the bear cub. You are walking through the woods and see him and think "Awwww, he is adorable"! Well.....adorable is far from it......he gets near you and rips your arm out of socket. Then you fall back stunned and bewildered. Now.....this is what you should really be worried about.....lets think of the name shall we....Destroyer ESCORT. Chances are......the Momma Bear is close by....now you should be extremely afraid. Because by now....the little DE aka. "The Cub" has ripped your arm off and caused you some damage. Of course you try to fight back and just p--- him off , and guess what? He screams and calls for momma to come to the rescue. Now this little guy more than likely has Hedgehogs and Torpedoes.....so forget hanging out at periscope depth......he launches 4 torpedoes at you and your dead with a capital "D".

Chance of Survival: 75%

DESTROYER:

At last..... the momma bear. Needless to say....she does have that animal instinct.....to destroy everything in her path! And don't think that WOLVES aren't on her diet....cause that is her main course. My advice to you when you see this ship comming......is pray she hasn't spotted or detected you. Throw those motors into super silent.........hell turn them off if you really want a chance. When she unleashes her fury..... we're talking Depth Charge, Hedgehog city, and that my friends.....is not a very friendly city. But hey....maybe you are the renegade captain, who has a reputation for taking out Corvettes and Destroyer Escorts and are gonna go head to head with this giant of a sub hunter. Lets think about it.........30 + Knot Destroyer against, at max, 7 Knot submerged submarine. Chances are that Destroyer is going to run circles around you (seriously, complete 180) and broadside you sending you to the deep six. My advice.....don't mess with this ship unless you have to. Go deep and call for help..... strength in numbers, there is no "I" in WOLFPACK.

The Submarine Commander in Enigma

As a submarine commander in the game Enigma, it is important to remember that the best of the very best eventually get sunk or captured. Hopefully, by writing this I will provide vital information for commanders that could prolong their lives in the game, and prevent others from being destroyed.

In the previous page, I gave brief descriptions of the types of surface ships that are currently available in the game at this time.(Later, we hope that we see carriers, cruisers, and battleships introduced) I also mentioned how fierce they are, and by no means under estimate the drone(computer)ships. The crew at Tesseraction did an outstanding job producing the AI in the game.(Unlike in IW the drones were ....well...just stupid and clumsy) Everyone knows that the AI ships are sometimes extremely tough to defeat and can get annoying. I think there are two approaces to killing the AI ships:

1.) Passive Approach 2.) Agressive Approach

Now, I don't think I need to go over the Passive Approach. I think it explains itself quite well. But, I'll give the "Readers Digest" version of it. Basically, you see an AI ship comming in for the kill. Naturally, you are submerged and are manuvering underwater and slow speeds. You try to get into firing position and send four torpedoes at the target and then dive as fast as you can in case you missed. If you missed, you know that depth charges or hedgehogs are comming soon. So, the deep is your ally in this situation and you dive as deep as you can and make a couple of turns to avoid getting hit and slowly start your accent back to periscope depth to make another attack. Fine and dandy, but it takes skill and it is very time consuming.

The agressive approach is the "accepted" method of hunting in Enigma. Lets just cut down the yellow tape and get to the point. You don't have to worry about your "crew" getting killed by incomming shells from the AI ships. So that eliminates one of the many responsibilities of a real submarine captain. And remember, it isn't about saving-your-ship-because-your-an-attention-whore-and-want-all-the-glory. No, it is about one simple thing....WINNING! So what if your ship gets sunk......guess what? It's a game and you can get another ship and go out there and take revenge on the person who sunk you. And if they are constantly targeting you, then you know that you are a good submarine captain. Otherwise, they wouldn't be putting you on their "priority" list.(*clears throat* or this means ...you just suck...) This tatic is very simple. Keep your submarine on the surface and use the deck guns/machine guns and torpedoes all in combination. The chances of your sucess go up dramatically when you are launching torpedoes at the target along with shooting shells and machine guns at him. He not only has to worry about your torpedoes, but has to constantly change course and try to keep your guns off of him. The downfall to this is, if he gets a fix on you with his guns, you had better hope you sink him with your torpedoes first, otherwise you are in for a rough time. But, here is where the best part comes in. If you think you are going to lose the gun battle with the ship.....simply dive the boat. I know, that was so hard to think of wasn't it? The truth of the matter is, submarines of the World War II era were more suited to fight on the surface, rather than underwater. The mainly fought at night on the surface. So all you have to do is bring those tatics to Enigma and you will find your sucess rate going up.

Oh, I forgot to mention. In the LFN mission where you have to sink the four oilers. The best tatic to use.......well.......is of course the agressive approach. I believe you start out around 150 meters. Well my fellow Enigma players.......5 knot submarine trying to get into firing position against a 9 knot tanker.......it just isn't gonna happen! (.) So, what do you do? SURFACE!!!! and get into firing positon and get under before an escort pummels you with his deck guns.

You still might end up gettin killed........but hey, at least you are in a better firing position.
