Does anyone have any hints on how to deal with surface mission 9? Killing the destroyers is trivial but how do you deal with the 12+ Sunderlands that drop in on you bearing bombs? I get strafed and bombed to death so fast it isn't funny.

That's for the LFN... in any case I've finished the mission. As long as one other DD survives, the airplanes are a lot easier to deal with.
I need help with this mission. The name of this KLM surface mission #9 is "Intercession".
You're commanding a destroyer and you've got to get 2 KLM subs to safety. There are 3 enemy ships, a sub and a swarm of planes against you.
I can only control the 2 subs. I tell them to WAIT as far away as possible in the opposite direction (usually due west). My fellow warships plus myself seem no match for the enemy ships.

I doubt if one can always order the subs .
[ I can't remember , it's been so long sonce I held low rank ! ]
But anyway ,,,I usually aim as many torpedoes in the direction of the three Alliances ,( You have to fire as close to the subs as you can .)
I pivot to do this , and only move at one third , a short distance .
I wait for the other three Barbarossas to come round .
If you head towards them , all guns will be on you , you wont last long .
I sometimes move around to other side of subs , between the subs and the LFN sub - which you have to keep an eye on too.
I let the other Barbarossas deal with the Alliances mostly , except for keeping up a constant stream of torpedoes .
I target 1 Alliance , if possible , to reduce their firepower .
Sometimes the LFN sub is tricky .
Sometimes I head round in an arc . around the top of the map .
( From 9 o'clock to about 1 )
The planes arrive , sooner or later during this .[ Usually about 11.30 LOL ]
Sometimes , if 1 Alliance is done by now , I go into an AA gun , and even order the deck guns to target a plane .
It's one mission where you can have a lot of fun in AA ,, plenty of targets !

I can, for one. eh:I doubt if one can always order the subs .
I've tried various similar tactics. I'll try again.
Anyone else with their detailed walkthrough?
Never have I tried to order our subs away westwards , presuming that , according to orders they have be given time to leave the vicinity , and know which way they must head off.
So logically , I let them proceed .
I will try this , tho' as you have mentioned .
In AA guns , ( if you do ) then voice commands to weave , of course , and come back into bridge regularly , to keep aware of all ships' positions , and movements of the LFN sub in particular .
The other Barbarrossas are slow at turning and getting into ' a position of advantage '( lol - as it says in some manual ).
Some damage is taken ,, until they move forward .
If you don't circle up from 9 to 1 , then by the time the bombers arrive , you might be lucky to have a few Barbarossas nearer , the comnbined AA is effective in same airspace .
After destroying all the Alliances , and having possibly two other Barbarossas still afloat , the LFN sub will still pose a threat . It can sink our subs which will be again surfaced then.
I head for it when the Alliances are almost done , and the bombers are too.
Now , to try that strategy , of ordering subs away .

I used a little bit of the Baron's advice to finally get past this one.
The moment the mission starts, issue:
AHEAD FLANK
DEFEND DECK GUNS
DEFEND AA GUNS
Bring up the BTAC and click on the KLM sub nearest you. Issue the SET HEADING command to the same heading as the sub. Keep on clicking on the sub in the BTAC and keep on maintaining the same heading. You are basically running away from the main battle and leaving the dirty work to your 3 sister ships.
When you catch up with the sub you're following, reduce speed and travel along with it to its port side at a distance of 500 meters or so.
At some point you will loose the 2nd sub to enemy fire. So be it.
At this point, dead ahead of you should be the enemy sub, surfaced. Click on its blip in the BTAC and issue the engage command. When your guns start firing on it, increase to flank speed. Dodge any fish it may launch your way. At some point, your guns should have sunk the subs.
You'll start taking on some hits from any remaining enemy ships off your stern but they should be weakened enough for you to eventually destroy as they chase you.
Then the bomber planes come in. I took the forward starboard AA gun positions and shot down as many as I could. You might hear the incoming torpedo alarm. Use the keyboard to shift positions but generally retain the same directional heading (NW).
At some point, I got the mission completed message prompt. I was happy to say I had enough. stop:
enigma!:

This idea to order the subs away makes interesting variants . I just recently tried this for the first times .
The deployment of the four Barbarossas is not always the same , but often in a line facing away from the approaching Alliances. The Alliances also , sometimes approach from different direction .
However it is done , the other three Barbarossas must take most of the damage .
I will replay this some more , ordering the subs westwards.
Hasn't every Admiral completed this mission loing ago ? lol

On those big slow bombers your 5" guns are deadly. Start firing on them with the big guns as soon as they are in range. I must have taken out 5 or 6 of them with my 5"
