Sub Mission#1

#1
I have just begun my first mission on a sub campaign and after about 30 attempts to avoid getting depth charged by those destroyers, I am becoming convinced, I am doing something wrong.

I have tried varying depths, speed, direction, even stopped and still they get me before I can get off a spread. What's the secret?

Mission 1? I mean common man you can do better than that! ;)

Now that I'm done being an ass hehe :P I'll try to help the best I can..... But keep in mind I don't use the conventional techniques and *cough* sometimes they don't work aswell and I resort back to the trusted methods. Anyways here goes:

1. In most missions when you start towards the usuall merchant ships you will have some resistance near by, after about the first 5 mins they are heading right at you, dont worry about them yet pick your target. (Mine is usually the closest boat that is comming to try and sink me)

2. keep the defense at bay by A) sinking them all like do or 8-) Doing what subs do and running silent and turning alot make sure they don't drop depth charges all around you. (External view although is cheating shows the depth charges)

3. The aft tubes ARE usful, the defense will pass over you this is your chance to run at the convoy, when the DDs or whatever follow the afts will either sink them, or slow them down significantly, use them sparingly (I play LFN and I onlt get 2 afts 8) )

4. Final rule what it all comes down to is TRUST YOUR SHOT. Use the maps and the pariscopes and make judgements after a while you'll get a handle on it, if your shooting a target 2000m away its better to go on to the next target and fire on him. Don't hang on the same boat for 5-10mins. If your running low, GET CLOSER.

5. If your desparite to get away depth 199 cut the engines and sit for a while..... or move around slowly.

Disclaimer: I am not a real commander in any way shape or form and I play this game occasionally at this time and I'm sure there is better responses to your question but I think at least some things from what I said should help you..... I hope.

Try to  sink  them ,  not  only  to avoid them sinking you  ,  attack is a good defense !
But only if you're in position to attack. If not, it's suicidal.

ERT is not a shoot-em-up game. Patience is a virtue.

I've found that going to 200 and veering hard to port or starboard at full flank until I'm about 100 meters away from the ship above gives me the chance I need to attack back.

I make sure I'm keeping that minimal distance and rush to periscope depth, adjusting course so that my tail is facing the target. That way, I've got a chance of hitting it with aft torps, unless the ship is too close, in which case it's back to evasive maneuvers at 200m.

I don't like pivoting down below when the ships are right above me. Sitting duck, IMO.

Pivoting  whilst  using the periscope will let you know there is nothing sitting on top
Your target hud, set at 500m, should let you know that.

Surfacing without knowing what's above you and at what range puts you at risk of being rammed by the enemy surface craft.

I know. I've been there. 😵

When you say pivoting, are you referring to pivoting the boat or the periscope? If the former, that's a lot of time lost compared to the latter.

Pivoting refers to the ship not periscope .

I believe this mission concerns facing two corvettes , with an oiler at some distance , as target .

On nearing corvettes ( and they nearing you ! ) of course , naturally the hud should be set to 500 m by then , if there is risk of being rammed 1 torp will persuade corvettes to alter course and begin the circling around tactic .

Keeping the corvette visible , ( thru periscope ,we aint surfaced ! ) , and pivoting up to flank speed , gives the chance to angle the torps ahead of circling corvette.

Basic stuff , to some now , maybe , but others are new as we were .

This particular mission I recently re-played a few times . Those 2 corvettes should not be underestimated !

When another enemy is in vicinity ( in this case the 2nd corvette) there is the possibility that it rams you from another direction , whilst your atention is taken by first . Essentially - Awareness , watching what is going on .

Always some balance to it , advance and withdraw , attack and defend .

Patience too , as mentioned by East somewhere , survival counts as victory .

However , if evading and avoiding too long , you find if the air doesn't first run out , the batteries will !

Re-playing them is as much fun , and either with same name ..or switching to another , so that you dont find you have a DD instead of a corvette !

If you had enough of that , switching back again is possible .
