Do The Ai Spot Periscopes?

It seems like they don't visually identify subs when the scope is above water and within siting distance. If they did, I would think they would fire their guns at the sub and they would approach them with precission.

Shouldn't it be that way?

I would think, once a periscope is spotted above water, that firing below the periscope in an attempt to hit the conning tower (or damage the scope) is a real life tactic. It would also make a sub reconsider whether it could afford to keep the scope up.

Or would this just tip the play balance too much towards the surface vessel's advantage?

It has more to do with simulating the act of visual spotting and pattern recognition. It's not an easy thing to get right so we have everything based on =) can't tell you that....

The AI DDs/DEs don't hesitate in firing off barrages of torpedos at me whether I have scope up or not ;)

My biggest problem (as a sub) is I often fire at point blank range and my toprs shoot straight underneath 'em.

Their torps will hit you if you're just below surface. I'm referring to deck guns in particular. If they see your scope, they could aim to do damage.

I've learned that lesson already. crybaby:
