Here's another way to take on an a head on attack.

What I assumed happened is when Warships has all of there pilots in close formation they are strong. Here is something to counter that.

Instead of the low guys (Pink on the map) going directly at the opposing force. Split them up and send them to the outside of the enemy force. Blue Wing (High) will fly outside the low outside of our low wing (Pink) and when the enemy force splits to go after our outside low wing Blue wing cuts to the inside and starts a double pincher. Do your best to keep the enemy split up as far as possible. When one of our wing is free it should turn and help the other group.

With 8 pilots send 4 to each side 2 high 2 low. If 7 or 9 Pilots Keep 4 pilots high ( 2 to each side) and send 1 up the center low and 1 or 2 to each side low each side depending on whether you have 7 or 9. This a a air combat maneuver used by the USMC. I have been studying a lot on Air Combat tactics. They will work well in this type of game.
