At what range do you all prefer to release your torps at a target? Hof far out/close in do you prefer to be? Also, what is your own prefernece to approaching a target? Lets say in this case a convoy with light escort support....

Depends on the circumstances much.
From beyond 4k to about 5k if there is chance of hitting some .
In the example you give , from about 4 , with guns targetted on escort (s) and hoping torpedoes strike convoy .
It all varies , depending on number opposing , and torp supply .
Then , if I can take some damage , from at unmissable short range , to finish off the last . saving until within 500 .
Even extreme close range if I can avoid enemy torps .
Can watch the effect better !

Yes, vague question I know....I just wondered if everyone is sneaking right up to the boats before taking them out, or doing as much damage from as far away as possible....

I always sets them to 44kts (max speed)
I prefer to hit CV's, DE's and DD's less than 100m from me, it gives the game some extra excitement and it gives a 100 hit percent
OL's, T's and M's Ill take at whatever range they are aslong as I can get a fix on them.

I always have torps at full speed too. Usually, you cant even see the darn bopats until they are withing 6k anyway!

I was thinking of surface .
In subs , naturally on max , but in some campaign missions , or other , a range of up to 8k . For example the USA surface 10, where you head North fast and keep far from the Hood .
Except for those circumstances , I can see no reason why anyone would set them on anything less than max speed .
Depth zero for surface vessels too of course . Subs a mixture , 20 and 50.
Anything within visual if I am in a sub
Very much depends on particuar situation , and capabilities - supply ,air ,batteries.etc.
Calculating the advantages , and strategic , and tactical strengths etc.
Visually I see only about 4k. ( Isn't that usual ?)
I see from your reply you were thinking of subs.
Beyond 1000 CVs are tricky , but an alternative target might present itself behind the first .
If time allows , then a spread at DEs and DDs at about 3k or so , if one can be sure of reloading before they approach too near . Then a clear shot at minimum magnification.
When you see whites of eyes of enemy crew . but before you hear that crunch of their bow .
Similar to surface tactics , close as you can for certainty . Waiting till a very clear view , and watching how target is attempting to evade .
Switching back and forth , from least magnification to 2x to watch more closely how target is altering course , but firing from 1x .
You get to know the timing and feel of it .
How this goes in multi , I expect differently in lots of ways , humans do strange things !
My AI tho' seems to copy some I do !

As for escorts, the best for me is the last-second down-the-throat bow shot >:( (has anybody seen Run Silent, Run Deep?) with torp speed at max, especialy for Patrol boats and DEs because they have such a small turning radius.
