Enigma, the game itself, has been out; to the best of my knowledge, two years. (I may be mistaken and will stand corrected if I am.) To compare the technology of a game released two years ago with the leader in the current technology, is like comparing the special effects on TV.

Lets be real, technology advances daily, so perhaps a more honest answer would be to compare Enigma against those with it which was released.

Now the review uses such terms as
...to use the funky interface...
but then follows it up with
...the interface wasn't very intuitive....
Well hello? Aside from the contradiction generated by those statements, the whole idea is NOT to spend hours reading an instruction manual, the whole idea is about the tactical situation, the whole idea stems from your role and your decisions. But Mr. Gooch, you already told us that...
Enigma is a naval war game set in a ?what if? scenario of World War II.
I note that PC Gameworld failed to mention the release date of Gold, and as fans, we all know that the best reviews, are timely. Pity this wasn't.

No doubt Messer Gooch will be around come multiplayer, an oversight from his review that is a representation of his own hot running "terd". Maybe that has stemmed from Gooch....blowing it out his ass.

Reviewers should be required by editors to report how many hours they spent learning and playing a games before they write their review.

It sounds like he didn't learned many controls. It doesn't appear he used the voice commands. (If the AI will shoot my torpedoes for me will someone please show me how.)

I have a couple of quibbles witht the graphics but the reviewer didn't spend enough time with the game to discover them.

Submarine don't interest me. Ship to ship gun fights are the draw in enigma. If the reviewer had named a game that does what enigma does I like to take a look.

Hmm, seemed to miss the point that ERT brought the genre not only out of the graphical dark ages but also out of the niche hardcore simmers closet; and that SHIII is a blatant copy, capitalising on all the things TAG didn't put in but were requested by players (e.g. visible crew).

Unfortunately I can't open the page with the review. Suffice it to say I'm not surprised at a bad review from them. They are primarily an FPS centric site.

For what it's worth: Here are the reviews for Enigma: GOLD to date.

If you feel like registering with yet another site, please be sure and add your votes to the really pitiful score we have gotten from users at www.gamerankings.com

(this is the text I submitted as my review of the game)

First thing to keep in mind is this:

-Single player is out now, Enigma's massive multiplayer online gaming "MMOG" still in development-

Second thing to remember: No matter how glowing a review I give this game, you may experience your own set of technical difficulties based your own level of knowledge in PC's or naval gaming, but there is a strong community support in the forums if you have problems, as well as the best support from the developers themselves.

If you've ever wanted to play a fully 3D game involving naval units, both above and below the water, with air forces tossed in for a little extra challenge.. you might have had to wait a long time.

I bought my first naval sim around 1985 - Silent Service, you could only play as the sub. 2 1/2Dimensions, not fully 3D.

So I waited some more and along came Harpoon.. not a 3D game, but it had all the sea & air units.. it mostly resembled a paper board game that was animated.

Waited again.. tried several other games, Red Storm Rising, Silent Hunter, and finally Silent HunterII with multiplayer connection to Destroyer Command.. but they were so buggy you couldnt make the multiplayer work.

Finally, by now you can imagine how it looks with Enigma: Rising Tide coming to market with a totally new twist in single player, and the promise of multiplayer.. (even if multiplayer is still in development at time of this writing).. the promise of this game being a massive multiplayer game totally destroys all previous companies attempts.

The twist is this.. you will not only play as sub or surface, you may also be able to play as air.. potentially dropping torpedos or bombs on unsuspecting destroyer "OR" sub captains in a fully 3D world.

SIMPLE - the game is not a technical nightmare or "pure" simulation. It's easy to learn for anyone who actually reads the manual. I've seen professional game reviews where they suggested the game didnt even work in certain areas, but it was obvious to me they didnt read the manual. I've completed the campaigns, I should know.

AND - all captains will be operating surface or sub vehicles for 3 different nationalities. In a MMOG environment this will be a huge leap forward for naval games.

AND - voice commands- another huge leap forward, which is currently available in the single player edition (includes first month free of MMOG when available) you are controlling your vehicle with either combination of keyboard, mouse or voice commands.

Yes, the voice command accuracy is the best I've ever seen for voice control, but if you are a total noobie, you may have to read the forums and ask for a little help in training your computer to better recognize your own voice, or to learn how to turn certain hardware audio settings to peak performance levels, but once accomplished, you will no doubt get immersed into evading depth charges as a sub, or blasting enemy ships with your destroyer (people sitting near you will be drawn closer to see why you're screaming DIVE DIVE DIVE at your computer or they may run thinking you're possessed. Either way the game gets peoples attention).

You can complete a campaign and unlock several battleships for use in tactical patrols as well.

One player in the fanbase has developed a mission editor, others are sharing self created mission packs.

The developers have announced a FUTURE PATCH to allow modding your ships/subs to a certain degree. Change camoflage, ship designations, emblems, etc.

I've waited for awhile for something refreshing to come along in the naval game section.. so dont you wait or you might miss out on this package.

Well having just read that review that guy is talking out of his backside.

Enigma is to my mind in a league of its own in Naval games.

It provides the one thing all the others lack and that is diversity. You are not just stuck playing Sub's or being German. An in the MP, when it arrives, you will be able to play against other Humans.

I got SH3 at the weekend, yes it is good but it is so one dimensional and you can see the influences of ERT on it. And what gets me is they have not even bothered to do all that much research into the ships you fight against they have a couple of good models but then use the same models for all the nations!!

So basically if I had to choose it would be ERT every time.
