The Big Wide Ocean

I'm making the assumption that the first phase of multiplayer - probably a closed beta - will be a big wide ocean, a la IW pre islands.
If this is the case, what is the current thinking for resupply (automatically recharging or needing to dock with supply ships?)
How about respawning (both for player ships and drones)? IW style random drops or some AI that drops you near your own forces?

PS This thread is meant to be about
what is going to be in MP, not
when or
who - please keep it that way

From Jabber Nov.5th.2004:
Code: Select all
[Buxton] I guess in MP initially they'll need to have some kind of automatick restoclking of ammo over time...or else drone merchants/tankers etc
[Jesper] yeah it be dumb if MTBs has to return home 2 days travel away to restock ammo
[Buxton] prolly limping at 5kts cos they got one hit....
[Jesper] lol yeah, see ya back in action in 72hrs m8 lol
[Jesper] its ok with droneships aslong as they can be sunk, that forces all taskforces to leave some warships behind to protect them
[Buxton] I assume it'll work like IW did, or as random patrol should (i.e. with respawns)
[Jesper] yeah well no respwans, if you loose all your tankers/oilers you have to seek a port for new ones,
[Jesper] tough luck, but respawn *****
[Buxton] but there won't be ports to start with
[Buxton] so has to be respawns or else you'll just get empty sea
[Jesper] then respawns should occur xxxx KM away
[Buxton] we need to start asking these q's of East
[Jesper] amen to that we really needs to get those sundays back

Ahoy. Let me address some of these questions:
1) Multiplayer is under concentrated development as I type this.
2) There will be land and ports (limited representation at first most likely)
3) The initial MP world will be focused on the AZORES from the Madeiras in the SouthEast to 100km NW of Corvo. This is a BIG area.
Since the Azores are relatively isolated islands well within reach of all the major mid-Atlantic shipping lanes, you can expect regular traffic to contend with. Plus your own need to resupply what ever ports you may have aquired.
There will be refueling subs where appropriate.
You will be able to pick your re-spawn location after you are sunk from amongst the ports possessed by your "side". If you have no presence on the islands at all, you will re-spawn at one of 3 default "approaches" reserved for your faction. There will be battle reports that you can use to determine which area you want to use to respawn.

So, we will be able to take control of ports, and use them for refueling and resupply?
Also, we will have to defend those ports from the opposing factions, so that they can't take them over and use them?
hope this is right. East???

That is correct. I'm out on a limb a little here, but our intent is you can choose to man the shore based weapons.

sounds good, no respawn in the middle of an ongoing battle (unless its taking place in the harbor)

Shore-based artillery will be cool, as long as we have decent sights, and can aim realistically.
Something like the guns in BF1942.

If you have no presence on the islands at all, you will re-spawn at one of 3 default "approaches" reserved for your faction.
Just want to take this apart a bit...
3 Factions each with 3 defaults.
3 factions with each owning a port.
plus merchant traffic (I assume) also having three defaults?
Maximum total of 15 (3 x 3 + 3 + 3) possible default entry points?
I'm looking to make sure that no vanishing type limeys can "stake out" an area and get the drop upon your "arrival".
Devils advocate: if I'm a sneaky kind of submariner and I know that traffic is transitting the area, can I "order" merchant deviations to avoid the approaching onslaught? Aleternatively, will the rentry points for drones be corodinate XY or will it be morem shall we say, grid squares BF24-54 - only giving an approximate area of entry?

Enemies will be able to stake-out a known location, but no ship will spawn (at sea) within sight of any other. They will be at LEAST 4k from the nearest enemy. This should keep things interesting - meaning if you are on stakeout, you better be careful since the battle will begin to come to you once you fire on someone....you can also run out of ammo you know....

hmm If no ship can respawn within 4km of another then ports will not be the only respawning points? as a port could be under close blockade?
