Battleship/battlecruiser Groups

If you look at naval warfare in WWII, they weren't fought with large groups of destroyers, but large groups of battlecruisers and other hulking ships. That's what I think would make Enigma really exciting, larger 11in to 18 in guns blazing, shells raining past your ship, and smoke filling the air. It's just something that is needed.

Interesting point, but it depends upon the scale of actions the large battle groups rarely fought each other the majority of actions were between one of two smaller vessals on either side. especially during the battle of the atlantic.

That said of Enigma is in an alternate history and we have yet to reach 1939 and from the research I have done on my own combined with the basic story line of the game leads me to the conclusion that there would be more reliance on the older WW1 ships by the RNE and the Japanese will be doing the major development for the LFN, whilst the Americans will charge ahead with their building devlopment and the Germans will do the same. Therefore in my opinion we will enter a Carrier based combat far sooner then in real life.

As Commodore Rob said. AND, don't forget what the Red Baron said. "Germany will build no more battleships." It is the age of airpower.

Not to mention the size a BB Battle group would be and the visable area while in battle in the game. You would be shooting the whole time at something out of vision. Two BB fleets would probably not fit in the (visable world) and if they did, most computers would have a hard time rendering it.

all that said i am not adversed to big fights be tween battleship groups:) i dont want an aircraft game:)

CR is exactly right. Although a countries primary naval striking weapon was considered to be their battlefleet in WWI and early WWII fleets, they rarely actually traded blows. The cruisers, small ships and subs carried, by far, the bulk of the combat.

IMHO, the cruisers are the most glaring omission in ERT, however, I also love the battleships and would prerfer to have them included over flattops.

if it were up to me, aircraft would be limited to scouts attatched to cruisers and battleships, and seaplanes/flying boats which would launch from small coves, but there would not be large airbases or carriers... This would make cruisers and BBs more important for their detection abilities.

just thoughts...

What good is an Admiral like myself without a suitable steed to ride into battle? BRING ON THE CRUISERS!
