Tides of War

Just watched the DVD called "Below"

Set in WW2 1943 sub film but its really a horror/ghost film LOL well kind of it a bit like the T Zone really but then again.....Oh I am babbling LOL

Anyway it has a nicely done DD attack on the US sub. And then they try grapples.

Worth a watch if ya like that sort of thing producer same guy that did Pitch Black.

never seen that one, but i watched das boot again over the past weekend. another awesome movie.

ill keep my eye out for it next time i stop off to buy dvds.

Saw that movie on cable. Interesting movie. I thought the grapples were rather nasty. Does anyone know if that tactic was really used??

Goalie m8 I have no idea how accurate that movies is, but I do know thism if I heard the chain sounds and then that scrapping I would be placing my head between my legs ..... and ya know the rest. That would have to be a submariners worst nightmare.

yeah. mine is the directors cut too, both sides = 209 minutes. just short of 4 hours!

I've been reading Capt William Ruhe's book War in the Boats - My WW2 Submarine Battles and he recounts an incident on his fleet sub Crevalle when they were trapped on the bottom in 174 feet and Japanese ASW ships dragged grapnels for them. He describes the clanking of a grapnel going over the boat's hull and then having a grapnel hook onto his sub and start dragging it into deeper water.

Since the sub was trimmed with neutral bouyancy it was "light" enough to be dragged around by the Japanese ship. They eventually broke free of the grapnel and escaped. Apparently the Japanese had an explosive device that could be attached to the grapnel cable and dropped down onto the sub, where it would explode on contact. Scary stuff!

Das boot is really ggod, yes. I saw it in a theatre when they released dir cut. too cool!! another good war flick is the sand pebbles. not submarine stuff, but surface. and if you are interested in a good read, try bloody winter: battle for the atlantic. LOTS-O-SUB stuff there!!
