Thanks guys. My sub hunting days are a bit more sucessful now as I do not require the entire can supply of several BB's to sink a sub or two.......

I've made a Ti-83 Plus program in some spare five minutes I had for finding submerged depths, so here it is:
PROGRAM: DEPTH
:Prompt B,A
:[square root](A[squared]-B[squared][store]C)
:Disp "DEPTH", C
--anything in brackets [], should be the equivalent symbol on the calculator
--take note that this is kind of a clumsy thing to wield during combat, and shouldn't be relied upon to much.

Since I have the Math skills of a trout and have been playing this game less than 12 hours I have depended on "pinging" my targets with the engage thing, really its not that much of a cheat, perhaps in the altered history they developed an active pinging system earlier and this is an easter egg the devopler folks neglected to mention...
Also, I would love to blast these guys to the surface instead of turning them into an Oil stain, how would I go about doing that?

Wait. The air supply aboard a sub is limited, sooner or later the sub has to surface - and then you can punch it hard with your guns.

Is that in a patch ?
Yes, it's not in retail versions.

I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my game as I've got 99% kill success when dropping at 170m, on easy and difficult? I've got all the patches.
All I do after they have fired their spread is come in nice and slow making sure they have time to dive and making sure I can get behind them, then speed up (when right on them) and drop a full pattern with plenty of lead.

German subs tend to be between 80 and 130 initially, will sometimes be between 150 and 180. LFN subs always crash dive to 206 meters, every time. Just wait long enough after you've dodged the spread, and they'll be there... (at least, that's my experience)
P.S. Will ballast tanks be a critical system later on, will submarines ever be forced to surface by sloppy charging?

Have you tried crashdive the LFN sub to 206meters?
If so your depthmeter must have been broken
The LFN sub starts to crank up at ~190m

The AI subs are actually stupider than you think.
If you are able to get past all of the torpedos one shoots at you at approach, they always crash dive to roughly the same depth. To make it easy to beat without any real difficulty all you need to do is set your depth charges at 200m with a +5 depth, if your aiming is right it almost works everytime.

I saw this quote when I followed an old link from a post back in September and thought some of the tin can drivers here would get a chuckle

from it:
"A depth charge has a magnificent laxative effect on a submariner."
-Lt. Sheldon H. Kinney, Commander, USS Bronstein (DE 189)
Remember, you don't always have to crush 'em to make 'em ineffective.
