you have to maintain a straight line, so the boats won t be able to launch any torps after you, because if a boat launches all of its torps it will stop following you and dissaper from your radar.
I'm not sure about that.... some of them kept after me with their AA guns after launching spreads, but they might not have had time to turn tail before my guns got them ;)
07:28:54 - Mission started at 17.10.35N, 74.36.57W
07:32:28 - Destroyed PTG 15 with a 3in deck gun round NE at 650 meters.

07:35:22 - Destroyed PTG 18 with a 40mm AA round NNW at 410 meters.

07:36:36 - Destroyed PTG 17 with a 3in deck gun round NW at 200 meters.

07:37:07 - Destroyed PTG 19 with a 3in deck gun round WNW at 500 meters.

07:37:57 - Destroyed PTG 16 with a 40mm AA round NNW at 479 meters.

07:38:12 - Destroyed PTG 14 with a 3in deck gun round NNW at 550 meters.

07:38:20 - Mission completed at 17.10.26N, 74.36.37W

Planes Destroyed: 0

Ships Sunk: 6
Hm... I only had to sink 6 to succeed, you had to sink 8

Or else he just sank all 8, the log wont say "mission completed" till you return home (presses ESC). In the log file "mission completed" isnt gonna be in the middle of the sinkings. :)

I had this exact same problem as the original poster. I read the many tactical comments, tried the "turn and run" tactic and it does draw them near, but the 50 cal/aa fire reduces your speed to nothing eventually and when the torps do come, your a dead duck.

Then, i decided to charge head on at a slight angle so one 3" could be in range, and turned on all weapons ( aa fire ) onto 1 target at a time using the tac map. As soon as the torp alarm went off, switch to 3rd person view, dodge em, and then re-target next ship. Finally, i was down to 2, who had "disappeared" from the map.

Using another tip in this forum, i switched my radar distances and seen a 'red indicator" at edge of map. They do move to a patrol area and after some time i tracked down the last 2 and finished them off. They both hd gone to the North East., even though my last track of them had been to the south west of me.

Hope this helps.

There apparently are 8 now ,instead of six , before patches ! .. It's a tough mission . The last boats can disappear off red indication , but if you continue ( like Columbus ) in the lst observed direction they will show up ,, but maybe in a different sector than last when they do . Seems heading right into them is more effective , but it helped when I destroyed 3 with torpedoes .

Going thru the posts it is apparent that this is a very difficult mission which discourages people from continuing with the game. I was among those and spent an inordinate amount of time getting thru mission #4. For my fellow sufferers, here is what to do so you can get on with life as a German Naval Officer and stop seeing PT boats in your dreams.

1. Run at easy setting, the onslaught is fiercer by the PTs but if you put it on difficullt you will never see the PTs when you hunt them down later.

2. Survive the PT boat attack. There is plenty of help in these posts on how to not get killed. Keep trying and be persistent you will get lucky and dodge enough torpedoes to live once. I have to admire the skill of some of these posters who can dodge all torpedoes - me I'm always hit a few times.

3. Now that you have survived you will have a shot-up tub that does only 12 or 14 kts. I have tried repeatedly to hunt down even a single pt boat - they move fast and the AI is unpredictable, often doubling back. You will catch them only by luck and hours of sailing around chasing red rings.

4. The red rings are key and are the guide to finding the PTs. When you see two quadrants illuminated you are zeroed in in Lat or Lon and head NS or EW right to the target. As the posts indicate the PTs will return to their patrol areas - hopefully you sank enough PTs during the initial engagement that you have to visit only one area. As I said they are quick and hard to catch - dont waste your time!

5. Now here is the trick. Head to the PT operating area using the red rings and watch the rings dance around you - they're out there playing with you. Time to go to bed. Set engine to stop and come back in 8 hrs (your call on how long, I just did it once). Good morning, (or home from work) Engines to flank and head for the rings. The PTs are out of gas and sitting ducks. A most satisfying turkey shoot.

A very innovative approach.

In RL, a destroyer facing more than 2 PT boats at a go was usually dead. Luckily our AI isn't as smart as a real person.
