It isn't about driving tanker's for free. It's about the upkeep of the online game. Even if you just drive a tanker, you're taking up electronic and digital resources, and they need some way to pay for that, plus Tesseraction is a small company and needs income to survive.

If tankers were free, it would be very wierd. 100 German tankers encounter 50 League ones. Just when defeat seems imminent, a single paying player climbs into a flimsy torpedo boat and sinks all the huns. That kind of thing would happen all the time.
