I too, can not get past this mission. The AI's torp dodging is laughable at best, it seems no matter how I change speeds and heading, their torps still hit me, and when the smoke comes up, I can't see them throuh binocs to engage target...so I pretty much take 4 more torps in my side and misison over...other times i'll sink a few and the rest run off...after a while oh chasing with no success, i get bored...

Tried it a few times again today...
What am I doing wrong? I've tried going at them head on flank, going at them at an angle (suicide), and running away, in which they run away and I can't complete mission unless I'm sitting here for a few hours playing it looking for them.
Going at them head on seems to be the best way, but ts hard to dodge torps and call targets to engange at the same time.

I was in the same boat you were on this mission until I tried a new tactic. I turned towards them long enough to gain their attention, then I did a quick pivot for 180 degrees, then ahead flank. I had the deck guns on defend, and gave the AA guns targets to fire on. It was rather easy then to dodge the torps by slipping in between the tracks.

I tried again, and got 4 of them, but the other group disappeared...

Just a note, those boats have a limited range. If you follow them (indicators on the tactical screen) you *may* find where they are scheduled to rendezvous for re-fuelling and/or escort.

I was following them East...and them the indicator went away...and IO kept going for about...10 mins, and nothing...
I like how the missions are hard though...its fun having to come ask for tips and stuff, imo

Once the indicators disappear, troll around in that general vicinity (keep lowering your tactical range until you see them) and you will find them. When the indicators disappear it means that the enemy is in the range set in the tactical screen. Lower it and the bars should return until they show up on tactical (one of your scouts spots them).

After trying many different tactics I finaly did the mission following the advice "odog1999" gave in one of his replys.
The key to win this level is to turn for 180 degress ,as soon as the first torp boats
show up, and head flank. Then the only thing you need to do is to set your 4 and 3 inch deck guns on alert in case a boat catches up with your ship(and if it does also launch some torpedos) and set your flak cannon to the first boat that gets to the distance of 1000m from your ship.
And the most important thing is that you don t zig-zag when the boats follow you,
you have to maintain a straight line, so the boats won t be able to launch any torps after you, because if a boat launches all of its torps it will stop following you and dissaper from your radar. Oh, yeah, one more thing it is better if you attemt to beat this level in a calm weather, so your boat will achive its maximum speed(which is about 21 knots, I think) and your cannons will be more accurate.
I hope you`ll have more luck beating this level.
This my report when I beat this mission:
IGN Surface Mission 4
Code: Select all
(T-443) American torpedo boats are operating along your planned course. You are authorized to defend yourself as vigorously as conditions warrant. If they come at you, sink them all.

Planes Destroyed: 0
Ships Sunk: 8
Total Tonnage Sunk: 616
Excellent work, T-443, well worth the temporary political inconvenience. Not only do the Americans come off looking poorly, but we send a signal to Washington that the Empire is not susceptible to Yankee intimidation.
I nailed 5 of them with flak.
