"Free french," maquis, bandits, or otherwise pirates and scoundrels. As opposed to loyal subjects of the Weltreich, the Great German Empire!

And thank you to whoever said Algeria. That is the small sandy nation I could not remember. The french evacuated all their regimental flags there when the Germans first pushed through their defensive lines in WW2, a couple months before Dunkirk.

Oh, forgot to answer the "why Turkish" - Turkey was a WW1 ally of the Austro-Hungarians (ANZAC day and such?), and I seem to remember them continuing the alliance through WW2. Nowadays if you have a Karibiner Kurtz or other Mauser/7.92mm/"8mm" German-standard rifle, all your ammo comes from Turkey, since they're the only place that still makes original cartridges.

No. The new Republic ( Since 1923 ) was neutral in WW2 , and only on Germany's side in WW1 , because the promised sale of two newly built warships from Britain , was broken . Those were vitally needed to counteract Russian presence in the Black sea , and because the Keizer obliged with supplying two ships , the pre-republican Turkey found itself on that side . Only half a century earlier , was the time of the Crimean war against Russia , with Britain as ally , and earlier still , against Napoleon etc .

Still unclear about which french !! One of Vaarok's list ?
