I've tried again after many months but sorry .. still the same. In a random patrol mission I was able to sink three or four destroyers but as I was up against the whole British fleet my batteries and air couldn't nearly last long enough ..
And yes, I used that 20m and F5 cheats.
The random patrols are the hardest in the game, you should try start with the basic training missions mate :)

Well if they was the odds I would never expect to last very long or do a great deal of damage as the fleet can dish out some serious damage above and below I should think.

I am doing all the sides at once so am only up to mission 6 on the US side the rest is mission 5s or 4s

I may just go get some fleet action :) and die fighting LOL

Jesper: true, I have found that out the hard way ..

East: Looking forward to the new AI!!!

"In random patrols no ship or aircraft has any idea where you are until you show them or let them hear you"

From that I would conclude that if I stop the engines and do nothing, they should not be able to detect me (?)

GlobalExplorer No I dont thinsk that would work m8, remember they are using an "ACTIVE PING" and even tho its a only few degrees arc, as they keep hunting they will get a echo off your sub, unless you ground it, which I am wondering if land is introduced.

Nearer shorelines we may be able to hide that way?

With regards to shorelines, I'm actually more interested in harbors, bays, or underwater landscapes to lurk around in (if possible).

I think it would be awesome to sneak into a harbor full of enemy ships and just have an all out attack...but that's just my opinion.

Search patterns is a cool idea. In CAOD the destroyers used them too ..

My recent tests revealed that I can stay undetected for a while but then suddenly escorts hear me when they are 3000 - 4000 m away. This is long before I hear their first active ping, so detection must have been with the hydrophones.

I had always expected I could escape initial detection (i.e. before my first attack) by staying deep (150-200m) and running silent (0-4 knots). But so far I have never managed to start any kind of surprise attack.

Also what I don't get if there is any chance to escape from the destroyers (apart from sinking them) after detection, because it never works for me. Once the got a fix on me I can either attack myself (if there are only a few) or I will die if there are more than three.

I also tried to run away the surface when I had managed to get 8 km between me and enemy ships, way beyond visible range. Though they were only 2-4 knots faster there was just no way I could shake them.

Thats a good idea, into the harbour, or running a blockade from habour hehehe

Das Boat style

GlobalExplorer arhhhh well so far I have had to Dedtroy them or die at thier hands, unless the mission has an easy hit and leave target.
