I'm going to have to weigh in with smithcorp here, and (by extension) with East. Assuming that the company stands behind the product -- which TAG does -- I see no problem with copy protection. As a small business owner I find that despite my kindliest and best expectations, there is always someone, somewhere actively seeking to take advantage.

If copy protection offers some value to a company who has invested hundreds of man-hours in a project, I am in complete support of that decision.

And, of course, I make sure not to throw the CD into the microwave!

Copy protection is mandated by Retailers. Publishers require it of us. The encryption we are using has not been broken yet. That's a good thing. My desire is that schemes will evolve so that, as in the old days with some lucasarts games, that there are PERIODIC checks for CD and CD Required for UPGRADE, not a CD In Drive all the time requirement.

Our real concern is that you are installing from a legit CD, not that it's in the drive all the time. Pass it around? It's still piracy, but you better know where it is when a patch comes out.

If it's a requirement, then I can forgive you ;) . Yet I am absolutely sure that this requirement exists due to strong lobbying of companies which invent protection systems.

I can only hope that some crazy, bored US lawyer would eventually finish off those companies. If both international AND local copyright laws allow making backups of software you own, then copy protection systems seem illegal to me. Am I wrong? huh:

Oh I have no problem with the copy protection (unless as in VC it made the game drop to 12fps on a 2.5 gh machine with a GF4Ti card LOL yes they fixed it fast LOL)

The problem I have is that the people making the protection were the guys and gals BREAKING it a few years or months lol before, its kind like virus protection.
