Nah, it's not the nicest mission.
The easiest way to kill them off: they come in two groups of three most of the times. Keep the three you're concentrating on together, this is quite important. If you split them and one gets away, you can restart.
Also a very important thing is to keep steering slightly to the far side of your target. This not only keeps them together, but most importantly, if you go straight at them, you cannot use all your guns. This sucks major, because two guns firing will finish them off MUCH faster. It pins them down. So keep a decent angle at all times. You will still have plenty of torpedo-dodging room. Don't let them intimidate you into 'making yourself small'. It's self-defeating.
Maybe that's the hidden lesson....

Yes , they are not so effective , they can be avoided fairly easily.
I usually target the 4" gun on the farthest , in case it gets away .

Here is another mission that leaves a lot to be desired. Go up against 6 boats that run twice as fast as you can, kill 5 and you fail the mission. That would be ok I guess if you can?t kill the 6th boat but to have the boat just disappear is absurd. I spent hours looking for the last boat and couldn?t find it. When they scatter you have no chance.
Whoever designed this mission has blown it and is the worst mission in this game that I am aware of. I have finished USA Sub and Brit Sub which has its tough missions but this rates a minus 10. As I stated before some of these missions were made by people who cannot play games so they design near impossible situations to make themselves feel good, shame on them.

Not a really fair comment, I'd say. The mission is sink them *all*. Your objective is not to lose any of them. They are not strictly gone, just incredibly hard to find back, btw. They move to two locations when you do lose them (see other posts here), and you have to be lucky even then to find them back. They are fast, and small.
Annoying maybe, but not poorly set up, or unfair. You do not have any satellites to help you in 1937.

A suggestion, follow the track it left on - remember it has limited range and will likely have to stop to refuel....or run out of fuel...

I beat this mission after a few tries. The 4 inch gun seems to be alot more accurate (at long ranges at least) when the ship is pointed toward the target, or perhaps it was just front-back motion and not left-right motion that made the gun more accurate? I nailed five of them, and the last one retreated NW, so I just set my course to NW and alt-tabbed to read some other forums, etc. I just waited for the klaxon to sound, and when it did I just set it to engage target and let the AI do the work from there on.

I actually beat this mission on the 2nd try, and *loved* it! Of course, I made generous use of the spectator view to avoid the torps! I thoroughly enjoyed that mission. In fact, I need to play it again, as it would make a great ERT movie.
