A more novice than novice question: how to fire the hogs?
First you've got to have a boat that is armed with them. Not all are.
Look in the Enigma.PDF manual that comes with the game. On page 25 is a picture of their icon in the game's HUD control panel.
You can either select it and click on fire or use the FIRE (or LANUCH) MORTARS voice command.

You've got the basic tactic.
The shallower the target, the easier it is to hit as depth introduces another variable into calculations/estimations you need to make prior to launching. You'll know when you hit a sub as you'll see some spray from the explosions & hear the impacts.
I found that practicing on some tame tankers in the patrol missions really helped. It gives you a good feel for firing range which you can then use on the bubbles/cavitation/'scope from a sub close to the surface. Take some time to look at the spread pattern of the individual explosive charges as well as if you can hit a sub with lots you might even score a kill.
When you do land a hit with a 'hog it's great!
As a personal tactic recommendation save some 'hogs for when you have a sub which is out of torps and running scared... (not that Jesper would even run in that direction!)
Good hunting!

Erm, how DO you tell when the sub is 300m away?

One easy way is to use the BTAC and when close enough, set it down to 500 meters.
There! No post of death for you on this thread!
