Ok, I am sorry for being a pain in the A$$. I still am having a problem with this mission.
Here is a couple of logs.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
IGN Submarine Mission 3
(UB-45) A storm has scattered American freighters approaching Ireland. One nears your position. Stop it and have your crew board and inspect the cargo. Do not hesitate to use warning shots to stop the freighter. If the American escort vessels become too aggressive, break off and run south. We are not yet seeking a confrontation with the U.S.
10:01:16 - Mission started at 53.19.13N, 9.10.57W
10:01:29 - Spotted a League submarine at 53.18.58N, 9.11.11W
10:11:35 - Destroyed FFL 4 with a torpedo N at 357 meters.
10:14:56 - Destroyed RI-3 with a torpedo S at 550 meters.
10:25:58 - Mission failed at 53.16.29N, 9.11.3W
Planes Destroyed: 0
Ships Sunk: 2
Total Tonnage Sunk: 4601
Mission terminated in the wake of your surrender. Though disappointed, your superiors count this loss as part of the fortunes of war.

"We are not yet seeking a confrontation with the U.S"
IGNOR this and destroy them.
Then sink every thing until you get a Victory
I tried to do it by the rules and died time after time, just WASTE the enemy because that is what a SUB is for!
As soon as I did this I won the mission
Oh and if the wren is the sub, I didnt sink it to win, I ignored it and sank every thing else lol.

Puzzling. I never have any vessels with " FFL " or " RI " anything .
There is a" CV" . corvette ,and a" U ", sub .
The Wren is the Wren . How can someone think it could be a sub,,,? and the whole history story in Enigma is woven round that " Wren incident " ..From the orders , ( if one reads them ) it's plain to see what the Wren is .. anyway .... That's what I see .
Not a pain at all , this log is interesting .
I'd like to know what is going on too.
Reading the log, one can see that you have apparently " wasted " everything ; and , even 3 vessels in your second log !
Maybe someone can explain this ; you sink everything ,, and still lose ! and maybe someone can explain why there are designations ,, FFL and RI , which I have never seen .

The FFL is the CV, that is the RNE Corvette type. The RI is the American-Jap sub. In the second log, I was able to chase the Sub away and fire a couple of shot over the bow of the Wren. She agreed to stop for boarding. I parked next to the Wren. I got a msg for my First Officer saying, "That was harder that i thought" or something like that. The FFL (CV) came after me and started shooting. I then sunk him. Went back to the Wren and sunk her. Chased the sub down and sunk him. Drove south on the surface and below. I have never gotten a ending misson msg. I get bored after awhile and ESC out to the port. This one has got me stumped.
Maybe I have a special copy. NOT.

I too am having a silly amount of trouble finishing this mission, I've been playing it for the past 2 days and have done it in every way possible!!!
I've tried just running south asap
I've tried sinking the LFN sub - then running south
I've tried sinking the LFN sub and the USA Escort - then running south
I've tried sinking the wren, the LFN sub and the USA escort- then running south
hmmm:
crybaby:
On another possibly unrelated topic, when I go far enough in a direction 2 red bars appear on the radar
What are these? and why are they here?
EDIT - Also, I dont recall ever having any trouble doing this mission the past 2 - 3 times I've played the german sub missions (previous patches)

Thank you for clearing that up Bottom Dweller ,, about the designations ..
Now. This " Running South" ; that is ONLY if you are in the LFN sub, it mentions it in orders .( LFN mission ONE )
Pop as many as you like at Wren , and head out ( quietly slowly and deep if possible )
This is about in the IGM sub. ( IGM mission THREE ) In thids case there are no orders to sink the Wren . NOR to head in any particular direction , including South !
Have you tried , just sinking that CV and maybe then , also the LFN sub ..and NOT sinking Wren ?
I will play this mission again a few times .
If you have installed a patch ,, maybe there is some explanation there .
Normally ,, In the IGM sub ( Playing the THIRD GERMAN mission ) you sink the CV at least ,, and you have a victory message .
The Wren usually goes down even before you can reach her .
It could be something wrong with the patch
SHEEP DIP.. You say you had problems only AFTER installing a patch ?
The red , on the B Tac ( Radar ) just shows in which sector enemy vessels are .
If it shows North West ,and South West ,( As in your example ) It may or may not mean 2 vessels , one in each sector , but only one vessel which is due West .
If you increase the range , you will probably see the dots .
If the enemy are outside the range , 500 , etc it will show a red edge ( more often one arc , unless the enemy is due East West North or South ;; OR if there are more than one enemy vessels / planes .

BARON
YES it is the thrid IGN mission. Here is my last log. I did not sink the WREN.
If you notice the orders it says: "If the American escort vessels become too aggressive, break off and run south."
I tried not to sink the CV, but you have too. NOTE @ 10:33:00 sank the sub and ran south for 17 minutes. Got bored and quit.
