Actually, avoiding a return salvo is very easy. At about 1200-1500 metres, call for a hard port or starboard and let loose a spread of 8. If you hold the turn for 180 degress, you should easily have evaded any torpedoes the AI releases.

The AI doesn't seem to use fan spreads -- they use parallel salvoes (or something close to it at this range). If they pulled a complementary hard turn and loosed at the same time that you do, things would be quite a bit harder.

Also, if you're going to approach both destroyers head on, you should try to do it on the reciprocal to pass at about 300-400 metres. This should screen you from the second destroyer's guns, and expose you to only 3 enemy guns.

The AI seems to be a much better marksman than my own AI. Running straight away from the AI, my 4 guns seem to score fewer hits than his 1. Course, that may just be the ouch factor as well as the difficulty of observing splashes in the arc 175-185 -- I'd have thought that the directors should be above the rigging.

Well, I'm happy I was playing in the right direction. I headed due north, when the TAC showed everyone at 45 degrees. This gave time for the Huns to sink the US sub.

After that I tried playing the torps and retreating to use all 4 rear guns but I got too many hits and I was sunk.

I'll keep tinkering with this, using the above fine points.

A little bug: if the Germans sink the sub, the radio message gives the player a message as if he did a good job sinking it. Not true.

"maximum reverse! Attack!"

Win without a close engagment? try this, based on the the advantage of you having dual 5" bow guns v their single bow 5"s.

Move into a position where you get visual contact with the DDs. Keep this maximum range, always with your bow to the DDs, which distracted by the sub, will not to intercept you.

Maneuver to deal with one DD at a time. Keep engaging, and reversing, to keep the max range. They will splash a lot of shots your way, but are not so accurate.....

When they come for you - which one will - go full reverse, and keep you bow to them. sunk both DDs this way - although it takes an age to kill a DD with deck guns.

You realize that the Barbarossas have always got at least 2 guns pointed at you right? Cause depending on which arc you're in one of the forward side guns will be able to train on you and hit you. The ultimate would be to somehow cross the T and bring all 6 guns to bear but that's kinda hard.
