Easy Vs Difficult

For cross reference, see this thread I started a few weeks ago about my confusion of easy being difficult and difficult being easy.

Thank you for your help but it didn't really help yet. As I have already mentioned, when I have the green light next to "EASY" off, I am still on easy mode. I have tried it both with the light green and the light black (or off) and the enemy subs are still triangles when 500m or closer. I want it hard to detect the enemy.

Wait, being that I have been an idiot before, does your setting when you start a campain stay in the camp even if you change it later? I might have had it on easy (doubtful though) when I started my surface campaign. I'll try a few patrols tonight to see if I can't find a way to get the enemy subs to be circles.

Oh, and USA surface 10a is freaking impossible I tell ya. I tried the walkthrough spoilers but it doesn't help. Im outnumbered and the enemy has all DD, no DE so we get spanked fairly fast. Any tips are welcome.
