A Strange Error

#1
G'day

Playing a training mission last night (don't recall the name - you have to sink three tankers and two subs come from the west) as an LFN DE. On two occasions I got the call "torpedo off the starboard bow", with an appropriate heading. I was stationary over a submerged sub at the time so my evasive action was to reverse.

It was strange because I knew the other sub was to port of me and sure enough the torpedos came from the port side.

Could this be a bug, or is it an allowance for the crew making mistakes in the heat of battle, or modelling of inaccuracy in the detection equipment?

cheers

Yep - absolutely certain East - no aircraft, just two subs, both over the port bow and the torpedo warnings come "starboard bow".

I'll try to replicate it and post some zoomed in screens if i can.

The mission where it happened most recently was Training Missions > Sea legs > Easy setting > LFN > Flower Class Corvette.

I sink the tankers and then approach the two subs that are coming from the west or SW, with my CV heading approx west to NW, circling to get closer to them. On every occasion, their first torpedos are from my port side and the warning states starboard bow.

Later, with both submerged, again, with one sub off my port side, I get torpedo warnings from "starboard bow" - in spectator view, the torps clearly come from port.

Hope this gives you more info, and I'll follow up soon with some screens.

Hi East

To answer your questions, it has been out to about 1,000 metres I guess, but I just did a trial illustrated with the screens below. On this occasion it was 400 metres in the same training mission as before (though this time I didn't concentrate on sinking the ships or shooting down the planes).

I put the subs over my port side and closed from 1,000 to about 400m. We traded deck guns for a while, then they submerged. Almost immediately, I got two torpedo warnings as follows:

"incoming torpedo, off the starboard side, bearing red 78, range 400m"

"incoming torpedo, off the starboard bow, bearing red 72, range 330m"

The interesting thing is the report on the torpedos heading - at 331 and 330, they are clearly heading NNW ish, while the radar and the screen shows this is to my port side!

The screen taken almost immediately from spectator view shows the torps clearly coming from the port side. The radar view shows the two blips close together on the port side - these are the subs that fired the torps. The second red blip is pretty hard to see, but the radar was just about to sweep over it again. The red blip to starboard on the radar is a Dornier or a flying boat and in this scenario, they only have guns and bombs I think.

Hope this helps and sorry for the size of the big picture.

Got it, thanks for that. We found where sometimes the text for starboard and port is triggered incorrectly. It also looks like the bearing and heading may reversed the same way. The Red (port) and Green (starboard) are correct at least.
